To safely eject a USB drive in Windows, use Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media, select Eject for the right drive, and wait for Windows to say it is safe to remove before unplugging it. Microsoft recommends this for USB flash drives and external hard drives to help avoid data loss.
Safely eject a USB drive from the taskbar
- Find Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media in the taskbar notification area. If it is not visible, select Show hidden icons.
- Right-click the icon and select Eject next to the drive you want to disconnect. Check the device name carefully if more than one removable device is connected.
- Wait for the Safe To Remove Hardware notification and for the drive to disappear from the eject menu. Then unplug it.

If the safely remove icon is missing
First, select Show hidden icons in the taskbar notification area. If the icon still is not there, turn it on in taskbar settings:

Windows 11
- Right-click the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
- Expand Other system tray icons.
- Turn on Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media.
Windows 10
- Open taskbar settings and find Select which icons appear on the taskbar.
- Turn on Windows Explorer: Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media. If several Windows Explorer entries appear, check the label carefully.
The icon may not appear if no removable hardware is connected or Windows does not recognize the device.

Use Settings to remove the device instead
If the drive appears in Windows Settings, Microsoft documents this alternative. Select the device and wait for it to disappear from the list before unplugging.
Windows 11
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
- Under Other devices, find and expand the drive.
- Select Remove next to it, then wait for it to disappear from the section.
Windows 10
Open Settings > Devices, locate the drive in the device list, and select Remove. Wait for it to disappear before unplugging.

Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 continues to function, but Microsoft support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10, and recommends moving to Windows 11. This change does not alter the eject steps above.
