Finish or stop any copy, move, or backup, close apps using the photo stick, then use your Android phone’s Settings > Storage controls to choose Eject or Unmount. Wait for the phone to confirm ejection before unplugging. The exact menu and wording vary by phone model and Android version.
Safely eject the photo stick
- Finish or stop active transfers. Do not unplug the stick while photos are being copied, moved, or backed up. SanDisk advises stopping active transfers before removing an OTG drive (SanDisk OTG guidance).
- Close apps that are using the drive. Close your file manager, photo-stick utility, or other app that has files open on the stick. SanDisk says Android users of its app should close the app and eject through the phone’s system Storage settings; an eject option inside the app is not the same system-level action (SanDisk app guidance; SanDisk Android instructions).
- Open the connected drive’s controls. Start at Settings > Storage, select the USB storage device, then tap Eject or Unmount if shown (SanDisk Support).
- Wait for confirmation. Unplug only after the phone displays an ejected notice or otherwise confirms that the drive is safe to remove. SanDisk’s instruction is: “Wait for the drive ejected notice” (SanDisk Support).
Where the eject control may be on other Android phones
Android does not use one identical eject menu across all manufacturers, models, and software versions. If you do not see the control in Storage settings, look for the connected drive in the phone’s file manager. ThePhotoStick’s examples illustrate the variation; they are not universal paths (ThePhotoStick, published March 18, 2025).

- Samsung example: My Files > three-dot menu > Unmount.
- Motorola example: Files > navigation menu > eject icon.
- Pixel 8 example: Settings > Storage > select the drive > three-dot menu > Eject.
Google’s Files by Google instructions explain how to open USB storage from a “USB available” notification and browse it under “Storage devices,” but do not specify an eject procedure (Google Files Help: Use USB storage devices). Use your phone maker’s instructions for the removal step.

If you cannot find Eject or Unmount
- Check Settings > Storage again and select the USB drive itself; the control may appear only after opening its details.
- Check the file manager for the connected drive and an unmount or eject option.
- If the USB notification was dismissed, return to Storage settings rather than assuming the notification is the only route. A Google Files Help Community reply suggests closing apps that may be using the drive, but it is volunteer advice, not a guaranteed procedure for every phone (Google Files Help Community, December 31, 2025).
- If there is still no eject control, consult support instructions for your exact phone model. Do not select unrelated USB options or assume every Android phone offers the same control.
Google says USB storage-device access in Files by Google is available on Android 7.0 and later, but that access guidance does not establish a universal eject menu (Google Files Help).

Why the pause before unplugging matters
Removing a drive during a transfer can interrupt the operation. SanDisk also notes that detection issues can relate to unsafe removal, file-system state, power limits, or incompatibility. That does not mean every removal without an eject command damages a drive; it means using the phone’s available eject control and waiting for confirmation is the safer routine (SanDisk Support).
