There is no dependable gigabytes-per-photo rule for an Android backup. Estimate the size of the photos and videos you plan to keep at your chosen backup quality, add your expected future media, then subtract the Google Account storage already used by Photos, Gmail, and Drive. Measure your own files before choosing a storage plan.
What determines how much storage your backup needs?
Backup quality changes the files you keep
Google Photos offers Original quality and Storage saver. Original quality keeps the resolution captured and counts against Google Account storage. Storage saver can reduce quality: it resizes photos larger than 16 MP to 16 MP and videos above 1080p to 1080p. Google says 16 MP photos can produce good-quality prints up to 24 by 16 inches. These are resizing thresholds, not a promised compression ratio; some items cannot be compressed, so Storage saver does not guarantee a fixed reduction in storage. See Google Photos’ Android backup-quality guidance.

Videos can change the estimate substantially
A library with frequent or high-resolution video recording can need much more space than a photo-heavy library. Google does not publish one universal file size per minute for video: duration, bitrate, scene, and capture settings all matter. Use the actual sizes of representative videos rather than a generic conversion.
Your Google storage is shared
A Google Account includes up to 15 GB shared across Photos, Gmail, and Drive. That is the total account capacity, not the amount automatically available for a photo backup; subtract the account’s existing use to find the space left. New Storage saver uploads count toward account storage. Google’s exemption for Storage saver uploads made before June 1, 2021 applies only to those older uploads, not to current backups.

- Capacity Display Variance: 1TB external ssd often appears as around 931GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 1 TB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Do not assume a new phone has unlimited backup
Google documents legacy Pixel-specific storage benefits, but they depend on the device and date. Check the terms for the actual phone and files you are backing up rather than assuming that an Android device qualifies for unlimited storage.
How to estimate your own storage need
- Check current use and backup status. In Google Photos, review the account’s storage and backup status. Open representative photos and videos and swipe up to view their details, including item size and backup information.
- Choose the quality you intend to use. Select Original quality if keeping captured resolution matters more; choose Storage saver if its documented reductions suit your needs. Check actual item details instead of assuming every file will compress.
- Measure the media you plan to back up. Total the selected files, or use the pending backup size shown in Google Photos. If projecting future use, calculate a representative month or year from your own capture history and add it to the current total. This is a personal planning estimate, not a Google-published average.
- Subtract other Google Account use. Compare the projected backup with the remaining capacity after Gmail, Drive, and Photos use. Google’s storage-management tips describe how the storage manager can surface large files and help identify items to move or remove.
- Decide how to cover any shortfall. If the measured need exceeds remaining account capacity, compare the current Google One plans available in your country. Plan names, tiers, and prices can change and vary by locale, so check the local plan page before buying. You can also keep a separate local copy on an external drive; confirm that the drive works with your specific Android device and backup workflow.
How much room should you leave for future photos and videos?
Use your own recent capture history rather than a generic annual estimate. For example, if you can determine the size of a typical month of media at the chosen backup quality, multiply that by the number of months you want to plan for, then add the result to the files already selected for backup. Use months with representative video activity if you record video regularly; a quiet month may understate your needs.

- Storage Capacity: 500 GB (gigabyte) of storage space.
- Compact Size: 2.5-inch form factor for portability.
- Multi-Platform Compatibility: Works seamlessly with PS4, Mac, phones (Andriods with USB C), and Xbox devices.
- High-Speed Data Transfer: USB 3.0/C for fast data transfer speeds.
- Sleek Design: Stylish and durable casing.
This projection only describes media you expect to add. It does not reserve account space for Gmail or Drive, so compare it with the Google Account’s remaining capacity, not the advertised total.
What Google storage figures can—and cannot—tell you
- Up to 15 GB: Google describes this as the capacity shared across Photos, Gmail, and Drive for a Google Account. Your available photo space may be lower because of existing use.
- 16 MP photos and 1080p video: These are Storage saver resize thresholds in Google’s help guidance, not a formula for predicting the resulting file sizes.
- 100 GB Basic and 5 TB Google AI Pro: These are examples on Google’s Google One page, not a permanent or universal list of available plans. The page says Basic and higher plans can be shared with up to five others; check the page for your country for current availability and terms.
Google estimated in 2021 that more than 80 percent of users had roughly three more years of memories in High quality within the free 15 GB. That was a dated estimate made around a policy change, not a current forecast for an individual user. In the same May 24, 2021 announcement, Google Photos product management said: “Your storage options will be easier to understand: We are renaming our High quality storage tier to Storage saver, which you’ll start to see soon.” The name change does not make new Storage saver uploads exempt from account storage.
