For a vintage Star Wars action figure, the safest at-home cleaning is usually gentle dry dusting—and only when the surface appears stable. Check for damage first, support the figure from underneath, and use a clean, very soft brush with light strokes to remove loose dust. If paint is lifting, the plastic is sticky or chalky, or the dirt will not come away easily, stop rather than adding water or stronger cleaners.
Inspect the figure before cleaning
Examine the figure in good light before brushing. Look for cracks, fine crazing, flaking or lifting paint, sticky or chalky areas, loose joints, fragile accessories, and small projections that could catch on a brush. A figure may include different plastics, paint, coatings, or glued parts; general conservation guidance cannot identify the exact materials or condition of an individual toy.
Support the figure from below while inspecting it. Do not lift or hold it by an arm, leg, weapon, or other projecting feature. Cracks and crazing deserve particular care around glued joints and painted areas, where handling or brushing could worsen existing damage. The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) discusses these precautions in its guidelines for caring for plastics and rubbers.
Remove only loose dust with a dry brush
If the surface looks stable and the figure has loose dust rather than an adhered deposit, start with a clean, very soft brush. Use gentle strokes and minimal pressure, supporting the area being brushed so it does not flex. A soft artist’s brush is a practical choice; CCI also identifies sable-hair brushes and unimpregnated microfiber cloths as useful materials for plastic objects. Its advice is general conservation guidance, not a tested cleaning procedure for every Star Wars figure.

Dust can scratch plastic, so avoid rubbing particles across the surface or pressing harder when dust resists. CCI recommends careful dry brushing or vacuuming for plastics. For a small figure at home, dry brushing is the simpler first step; if brushing does not remove the material easily, stop instead of escalating the treatment.
Do not use liquid or household cleaners as a next step
Avoid dish soap, household sprays, solvents, bleach, wax, abrasive polish, routine rinsing, and immersion. Water-based solutions can also harm plastic or rubber: depending on the material and its condition, moisture or solvents may cause dimensional change or stress cracking. The figure’s exact plastic and treatment history are not established by its age or appearance alone.

Do not flex joints or scrub to reach dirt in crevices. If cleaning would require moisture, force, or moving a fragile part, leave the deposit in place and seek advice from a conservator familiar with plastics. CCI’s Care of Objects Made from Rubber and Plastic advises dry cleaning by careful brushing or vacuuming and recommends expert help when simple techniques do not work.

A white film, powder, oily sheen, or sticky surface can be associated with additives migrating out of aging plastic. Such deposits are not necessarily removable dirt, and wiping may only clear them temporarily. Solvents or surfactants can penetrate plastic and create further problems, so do not try to make the figure look new by repeatedly wiping or applying a product.
Plastic deterioration varies. Older plastics may become brittle, cracked, chalky, or sticky, and a sticky surface can trap dust. The CCI lists ABS, polystyrene, and PVC among plastics found in collections, including in some toys, but that does not establish which material—or combination of materials—is in a particular figure.

End the cleaning attempt if paint lifts, the surface sheds or feels friable, a joint or accessory seems unstable, dusting requires pressure, or a deposit remains adhered. A conservator familiar with plastics can assess the object and advise whether any further treatment is appropriate. The CCI’s guidance is to seek expert help when simple techniques fail; it does not support a guaranteed home remedy for a specific figure.
