A small butane lighter is still a container of flammable fuel, and a keychain loop does not stop its ignition control from being pressed. Choose a lighter with an intact protective cover or lock, and carry it so keys and other objects cannot press the control. Do not carry one that is damaged, leaking, or activating unexpectedly. These are practical precautions, not a certified or universally tested keychain-carry method.
How to reduce the risk of accidental ignition
Keep the ignition control protected whenever the lighter is attached to your keys or carried in a pocket or bag. A cap, cover, or lock can help, but it is a precaution rather than a guarantee. Place the lighter in a holder or separate pocket that shields the control from pressure by keys and other objects. Follow the manufacturer’s care and use instructions.

When comparing lighters for everyday carry, look at the features that affect both ignition protection and travel rules. Compact size alone does not establish that a lighter is safer to carry.

- Flame type: An ordinary-flame butane lighter has a different U.S. air-travel status from a torch, blue-flame, or jet-flame lighter.
- Cover or lock: Check that it is present, intact, and functions as the manufacturer describes.
- Holder: Consider whether it keeps keys and other objects from pressing the ignition control; no reviewed source identifies a universally safe or certified keychain holder.
- Care instructions: Follow the manufacturer’s directions for carrying, use, and storage.
U.S. air-travel rules for butane lighters
These rules apply to U.S. passenger air travel, not everyday carry everywhere. The FAA’s PackSafe page, marked last updated April 13, 2026, says absorbed-liquid and butane lighters are limited to one per passenger in carry-on baggage or on the person. If a carry-on bag is checked at the gate or planeside, remove the lighter and keep it with you in the cabin. The FAA says torch, blue-flame, and jet-flame lighters are not allowed in the cabin or checked baggage. See the FAA PackSafe lighter guidance.
Under the U.S. passenger exception in 49 CFR § 175.10(a)(2), one individual-use lighter may be carried on the person or in carry-on baggage. Lighter fuel and refills are barred from passenger baggage. The regulation also contains provisions for battery-powered lighters; those provisions should not be treated as rules for butane lighters.

TSA lists fueled disposable and Zippo-style lighters as prohibited in checked bags unless they meet the DOT-approved case exception. That is a checked-baggage rule; consult the TSA lighter listing along with the FAA guidance. Check current official instructions and your airline’s requirements before departure.
Rules outside the United States
Do not assume U.S. rules apply to an international itinerary. Countries can set different passenger conditions. For example, Singapore’s Civil Aviation Authority provides its own guidance for packing for a flight. Check the relevant aviation authority and airline for each part of your trip.
