A data breach does not, by itself, prove that anyone accessed your brokerage account or that your investments were lost. But exposed login credentials or personal financial information can help a criminal take over an account. If you receive a breach notice or suspect your information was stolen, contact your investment firm through a trusted channel, check for unfamiliar activity and account changes, and strengthen sign-in security. This guidance is for U.S. account holders; your firm can advise on steps specific to your account.
What a breach can—and cannot—tell you
Exposure of personal information and brokerage-account takeover are separate events. A breach notice is a reason to act, not proof that your brokerage account was accessed. The SEC warns that criminals with stolen credentials or financial information may reset an account password, lock the investor out, transfer funds, steal more personal information, or place unauthorized trades. Respond according to what you know: exposed information with no account warning signs calls for prompt protection and monitoring; an unfamiliar sign-in, changed account details, unauthorized trade, or transfer calls for immediate contact with the firm.

1. Contact your investment firm using a trusted channel
If financial information may have been stolen, contact your broker-dealer, investment adviser, or other financial professional promptly. The SEC advises investors to report the problem and ask what steps to take to protect the account. Use a phone number from a statement or a firm website you reach yourself, rather than a link or number in an unexpected email, text, or call. Criminals may impersonate firms or officials to obtain credentials or authentication codes.

If the exposed details could affect other accounts, contact those banks, card issuers, insurers, or financial institutions as well. Keep a written record of whom you contacted, when, and what they advised; confirm important conversations in writing.
2. Review activity and account details
Check recent activity, statements, and trade confirmations. Look for trades or transactions you did not authorize, as well as unfamiliar changes to your address, phone number, email, account number, or linked bank information. Report suspicious activity to the firm promptly. The SEC also advises investors to protect their accounts and watch for suspicious activity in “Protect Your Investments”.

3. Strengthen sign-in security
Turn on the firm’s two-step or multifactor verification if it is available. Some firms support authenticator apps; passkeys may also be an option, but support depends on the investment website and device. Use a strong passphrase if the account supports one. The SEC’s online investment account security bulletin discusses these protections and notes that its staff guidance does not change applicable law or create new obligations.
Never give a one-time verification code to someone who contacts you, even if they claim to represent your firm or a government office. Verify unexpected requests through a contact method you already trust; do not follow message links to sign in.

4. Ask whether the account should be closed and replaced
If you find evidence of unauthorized access, ask the investment firm whether it recommends closing the compromised account and moving assets to a new one. Follow the firm’s process rather than making a transfer decision based on an unsolicited call or message claiming it can recover your funds.

What SIPC protection does—and does not—cover
The Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) addresses certain shortfalls in customer securities and cash when a SIPC-member brokerage firm fails and enters liquidation. It generally does not cover falling investment values, bad advice, or fraud unrelated to the firm’s custody of customer property. SIPC protection may apply to a fraudulent transfer of securities, but a breach or scam loss is not automatically reimbursed.
