Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchUse Playwright for Python with pytest: save a reviewed screenshot as the expected baseline, then compare later captures against it. Keep baseline creation and repeat runs on the same Ubuntu, browser, and rendering setup to reduce noise from environment differences. Playwright lists Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, and 26.04 among supported Linux environments; confirm current support and browser dependencies in its installation guide.
Choose what to capture and compare
Use a full-page screenshot when the whole layout matters, or capture a single element to focus the check on a component and avoid unrelated page changes. Playwright’s Python screenshot API supports viewport, full-page, and element captures; it can save an image to a file or return image bytes for further processing. See Playwright’s screenshot guide.

- Full page: useful for broad layout changes, including content below the initial viewport.
- Element: useful for checking a component such as a navigation bar, card, or pricing block.
- Viewport: useful when the visible browser window is the specific thing you need to validate.
For integrated visual checks, Playwright’s snapshot workflow creates a reference on its first run and compares later runs with it. If you need custom image processing, capture screenshot bytes and pass them to a separate pixel-diff tool instead. The comparison tool and thresholds depend on your project; do not assume an image diff alone can determine whether a change is a defect.

Use a project virtual environment and keep the installed Playwright version consistent across baseline and test runs. Install the Playwright Python package and its pytest plugin, then install the browser binaries for that version. The official setup commands and the current Ubuntu support and dependency guidance are maintained in the Playwright Python installation guide.

Do not assume every Ubuntu release, architecture, or browser dependency is interchangeable. Check the current support list for the machine or CI runner you will use. The documentation lists Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, and 26.04 as supported Linux environments.
Write a pytest screenshot check
The example below uses the pytest plugin’s page fixture and Playwright’s visual snapshot assertion. Replace the URL and locator with elements that represent the intended state of your site. The screenshot APIs and pytest options are documented in the screenshot guide and pytest plugin reference.

from pathlib import Path
from playwright.sync_api import Page, expect
def test_homepage_visual(page: Page) -> None:
page.set_viewport_size({"width": 1440, "height": 900})
page.goto("https://example.com", wait_until="networkidle")
# Wait for a meaningful page state rather than assuming navigation alone
# means the part under test is ready.
expect(page.get_by_role("heading", name="Example Domain")).to_be_visible()
# First run creates the reference; later runs compare against it.
expect(page).to_have_screenshot("homepage.png", full_page=True)
Use a readiness condition that fits the application. A heading, loaded component, or application-specific state can be more useful than a generic delay; there is no single wait condition that guarantees every site is ready. A network-idle wait may also be unsuitable for pages with persistent network activity.
To capture only a component, use a locator screenshot or snapshot assertion for that locator, for example:

Playwright’s pytest plugin uses Chromium by default in its documented configuration. It can also select Firefox or WebKit; add those browsers when they reflect your audience or the compatibility risk you need to check. See the pytest plugin reference.
Create, review, and update screenshot baselines
- Create the reference: run the visual test once in the chosen environment. The initial run produces the expected screenshot reference.
- Review it before accepting it: inspect the saved image to confirm it shows the intended page state and viewport. A generated baseline is not proof that the page is correct.
- Commit the reviewed reference: keep it with the test so later runs compare against the same expected image.
- Inspect a failure: compare the expected, actual, and difference images. Determine whether the change is intentional before changing the reference.
- Update only for an intentional change: use Playwright’s snapshot update mechanism through the test runner after reviewing the design change. Do not automatically accept an unexplained failure.
Playwright’s visual comparison documentation describes reference creation, subsequent comparisons, and updating snapshots.

Keep runs reproducible and useful
Match the rendering environment
Run baseline generation and comparisons with the same operating system, browser version, viewport, settings, and headless configuration where possible. Playwright cautions that rendering can vary with the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. A baseline made on one setup may therefore produce noisy differences on another.

Choose capture scope deliberately
A full-page image catches broad layout shifts but also includes more content that can change independently. An element capture narrows the comparison to a component, but it will not reveal problems elsewhere on the page. Pick the scope that matches the regression risk.

Preserve useful failure output
The pytest plugin supports screenshot options, including full-page screenshots on failure. Enable the failure artifacts your team needs and retain them in local or CI test output so a developer can inspect what changed. Plugin options are listed in the pytest plugin reference.

- Browser executable or dependency error: install the browser binaries for the Playwright version in the project and consult the current Ubuntu dependency instructions. Check that the Ubuntu release and architecture are supported.
- Test times out before capture: verify the URL is reachable from the runner and replace overly broad readiness assumptions with a locator or application state that indicates the content under test is ready. Pages with ongoing requests may never satisfy a network-idle condition.
- Diff appears after moving the test to CI: compare the OS, browser build, viewport, and headless settings with the baseline environment. Rendering changes can be environmental rather than application changes.
- Image changes between otherwise similar runs: make the tested page state and capture scope more specific, then inspect actual and diff images. Do not update the snapshot until you have confirmed the change is intended.
- Whole-page check is noisy: switch to a component locator if the intended assertion concerns one stable region; keep a full-page check where broad layout is the requirement.
- Snapshot update would hide a regression: stop and review the expected, actual, and difference images. Updating a reference should record an accepted change, not silence a failed test.

ScreenshotNeo can return a page screenshot from one request. Its clean-shot flow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and whether the shot was billed. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents and has a free allowance of 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. See ScreenshotNeo and the API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"

-o shot.webp
For change checks, save and review the returned image as your expected reference, then compare later captures using your chosen test or diff workflow. The API gives you the capture; it does not replace reviewing a baseline or deciding whether a visual change is correct.
