To run visual regression tests for a Laravel site, capture a page under fixed browser and viewport conditions, compare the result with a reviewed reference image, and investigate differences before accepting a new baseline. Laravel Dusk can capture screenshots from PHP browser tests; Playwright Test offers built-in screenshot assertions if your team prefers a JavaScript test stack. For new Laravel projects, the current Laravel documentation recommends considering Pest 4 for browser testing.
Choose a browser-testing foundation
Visual regression testing is a comparison workflow, not just screenshot capture. A screenshot records what the browser rendered; a separate comparison step determines whether that rendering changed from an approved baseline.

Use Pest 4 for a new Laravel browser-test setup
The Laravel 13.x Dusk documentation says, “For new projects, we recommend using Pest for browser testing.” Pest 4 includes automated browser testing. If you are starting from scratch, review the current Laravel guidance and use the version appropriate to your application: Laravel Dusk documentation.

Keep Dusk if it already fits your PHP workflow
Dusk remains documented and provides browser automation and screenshot-capture methods. It is a practical choice if your existing browser tests already use PHP and Dusk. Capturing images with Dusk does not, by itself, create a baseline comparison; add a comparison tool or integration.

Choose Playwright Test deliberately
Playwright Test is a separate JavaScript test stack, not a Laravel-specific PHP API. It can suit a team that already uses Playwright or wants its screenshot assertions, but it means maintaining browser tests outside the PHP runner. See the Playwright screenshot comparison guide and snapshot assertion API.
Make screenshots repeatable
A comparison is useful only when the capture conditions are sufficiently consistent. Fix the page state and rendering environment before treating a changed pixel as an application defect.
Control page data and state
- Seed predictable records and use a known account or fixture state.
- Avoid timestamps, randomized values, live data, rotating banners, and other variable content unless that variation is what you intend to test.
- Navigate to the same route and use the same relevant interaction state for each run.
Fix viewport and browser conditions
Use explicit viewport sizes for each scenario. Treat desktop and mobile as separate named cases rather than allowing a developer’s screen size to determine the screenshot. Dusk supports browser resizing and responsive screenshot capture. Keep the browser/runtime image, browser version, operating system, fonts, device scale, and headless settings consistent across local and CI runs where possible. Playwright warns that host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect screenshot output.
Wait for stable rendering
Wait until the content under test is present and fonts and images have loaded. Settle animations, transitions, and transient UI before capture when they are not part of the test. There is no single wait strategy prescribed by the cited Laravel documentation; use an application-specific condition that reflects when the page is actually ready, rather than relying on a short arbitrary delay.

Capture screenshots with Laravel Dusk
The following Dusk examples use the documented screenshot APIs. Place them in a browser test after navigating to the intended page and arranging a stable state. Check the API behavior against your installed Dusk version and project configuration.
Capture a named page screenshot
$browser->visit('/account/settings')
->screenshot('account-settings-desktop');
Dusk’s regular screenshots are stored under tests/Browser/screenshots.
Capture a selected element
$browser->screenshotElement('#profile-card', 'profile-card');
An element capture can reduce unrelated changes elsewhere on the page, but it also means changes outside the selected region will not appear in that image.

Compare the current render with a baseline
After capture, compare the new image against a reference that someone has reviewed and approved. A screenshot test should report changed regions clearly enough for a developer to decide whether the change was intended.
Playwright screenshot assertions
Playwright Test provides toHaveScreenshot() for comparing against stored expected snapshots. Use the documented assertion suited to a whole page or element and retain the expected images with the test’s snapshot artifacts. See the Playwright snapshot assertion API for the current details.
Dusk with a local comparison package
If you want to keep browser actions in Dusk and manage references in your repository, a local comparison package is one option. The laravel-dusk-visual-assert package is community-maintained. Before adopting it, check its Composer constraints, release activity, and CI behavior against the Laravel and Dusk versions in your project; compatibility and maintenance should not be assumed.
Dusk with a hosted review integration
A hosted visual review workflow may suit teams that want external build and review tooling. The community Laravel Dusk/Percy integration is one documented route. It adds a service, account and token configuration, plus a vendor-specific workflow; verify the integration’s current compatibility and service terms before committing to it.

Review diffs and update baselines carefully
- Inspect each changed region in the context of the page and test state.
- Decide whether the change reflects an intended design or content update, an actual regression, or environmental drift.
- Accept a new baseline only after that review. Replacing snapshots automatically or blindly can make a real regression part of the expected output.
- If differences appear unexpectedly, first check browser/runtime image, viewport, fonts, device scale, operating system, and headless mode before relaxing comparison settings.
A visually changed screenshot is evidence of a rendering difference, not proof that the difference is wrong. A baseline update that passes mechanically is not a substitute for deciding whether the new appearance is acceptable.
Keep visual checks alongside functional and accessibility tests
Screenshot comparison checks rendered appearance. It does not establish that a button works, a route enforces authorization, text communicates the right meaning, or a page is accessible. Keep functional browser assertions, unit or feature tests, and accessibility checks alongside visual tests. The cited Dusk/Percy integration also presents visual testing as an additional tool rather than a replacement for other tests.

Large differences appear on every run
Look for unstable data, timestamps, rotating content, animation, late-loading fonts or images, and inconsistent page state. Make the test data deterministic and capture only after the relevant content has settled.

Screenshot dimensions change unexpectedly
Check whether the test is using the intended explicit viewport and device scale, and whether browser resizing or responsive capture is configured consistently. Treat each target width as its own scenario.
A Dusk screenshot exists, but no test fails on a visual change
Capture alone is not comparison. Add a comparison step using a compatible local tool or a hosted integration, and ensure that the test runner actually evaluates the generated image against a reviewed reference.
A community package does not work with the current project
Check the package’s Composer constraints and release activity against your installed Laravel and Dusk versions, then verify its behavior in CI. Community integrations can lag framework releases; do not assume compatibility just because a package name mentions Dusk.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do screenshots alone count as visual regression testing?
No. They become visual regression tests when a current capture is compared with a reviewed baseline.
Can a visual diff prove a page is accessible?
No. Screenshot comparisons do not replace accessibility checks.
