Pay special attention to wallet setup, signing, network state, transaction feedback, and recovery. Protect participants by never requesting credentials, seed phrases, remote access, or real funds, and keep research records off-chain.
Start with the decision, not a generic question
Before recruiting anyone, write down three things: the product decision at stake, what the team does not yet know, and what evidence could change its decision. A question such as “Do first-time users understand which network they are on?” is easier to act on than “What do users think of the app?” Other useful questions concern wallet setup, transaction prompts, or what people do when a transaction is delayed or fails.

Match the method to the uncertainty. Interviews can uncover context and mental models; task-based usability sessions show where a flow helps or confuses; surveys can gather structured responses once the question is clear. Product metrics and public or on-chain activity can add context, but neither automatically explains why an individual acted. The Bitcoin Design Guide’s user research guidance and Kraken’s participant guidance both provide practical starting points.
Choose a method that fits the evidence you need
| Method | Best suited to | What it can show | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interview | Exploring context, motivations, past behavior, and users’ mental models | How someone describes a recent experience, what they expected, and what they found uncertain | What someone says about behavior is not the same as observing the behavior itself. |
| Task-based usability session | Finding breakdowns in a prototype or product workflow | Where a participant hesitates, makes an error, or interprets an interface differently than intended | A test with a limited group does not establish how common a problem is across the entire audience. |
| Survey | Collecting structured responses to a defined question | Patterns in answers across respondents | It is a poor substitute for first understanding the question and response options clearly. |
| Product or network analytics | Examining aggregate activity or changes in workflow measures | Measures such as completion, abandonment, errors, or time; some aggregate on-chain patterns | Pseudonymous activity alone does not establish a person’s identity, circumstances, or intent. |
No one method answers every question about motivation, usability, and safety. Pair methods when useful—for example, use interviews to understand context, then observe a task to see how a proposed flow works. Treat public discussion and on-chain signals as supplementary evidence rather than replacements for talking with users.

Recruit for the product’s audience and use cases
“Crypto users” is not a sufficiently specific recruiting brief. Define the people likely to use the product and the tasks they would perform. Depending on the product question, distinguish between newcomers and experienced participants, use cases, familiarity with the product, accessibility needs, or geography. The Ethereum.org web3 design and UX resources and Bitcoin Design Guide discuss the range of audiences and use cases; public communities can help surface issues, but their members may not represent all potential users.
Do not treat a single study’s sample as a universal recipe. A 2024 CHI study about cryptocurrency wallet choice and security is a domain-specific example: its protocol covered wallet choices and reasons, security perceptions, and protective practices, and it obtained informed consent before interviews and recording. It illustrates how to connect a protocol to explicit questions, not how every team must recruit.
Prepare interviews and task sessions
Ask about recent, concrete behavior
Use neutral prompts that invite a participant to reconstruct what happened, rather than confirm a theory. For example:

- “Think about the last time you set up a wallet. What did you do first, and what were you expecting?”
- “Tell me about the last transaction that took longer than you expected. What did you do while you waited?”
- “What did you understand this prompt was asking you to authorize?”
- “How did you decide whether you were on the right network?”
Ask what the person did, expected, was unsure about, and did next. Avoid assuming that terms such as “gas,” “sign,” “bridge,” or “approval” mean the same thing to everyone.
Give usability participants a task, then observe
Offer a realistic task and let the participant work through it without steering them toward the intended route. Explain that the interface is being tested, not their ability; Kraken uses the framing “we are testing the web page and not you” in its participant guidance. Record where people hesitate, what they interpret, and how they respond, rather than treating successful task completion alone as proof that the design is clear.
Use a guide without turning it into a script
Prepare an interview or session guide that covers the research questions but leaves room for relevant follow-up. Before starting, confirm consent, whether recording is acceptable, how data will be handled, and any incentive terms. Keep research separate from support or personalized financial and product advice: a research session is for learning, not advice about what a participant should do with crypto or a product.

Test the crypto-specific parts of the workflow
Ordinary app usability checks may miss risks that arise from wallets, networks, permissions, and irreversible or delayed transactions. Use a prototype or safe environment to examine the actual steps participants need to understand.
- Wallet and onboarding: Can participants explain what they are setting up and what responsibility they are taking on?
- Signing and approvals: Can they tell what action they are authorizing and which asset or permission is involved?
- Network state: Can they identify the network in use and recover from a wrong or unsupported network?
- Transaction feedback: Can they distinguish pending, completed, and failed states, and understand whether they need to wait or take another action?
- Terminology and information hierarchy: Can they understand the important information and risks without already having a technical mental model?
- Trust and security cues: Are risks and safety features communicated clearly, and do trust cues correspond to real product properties?
Ethereum.org’s “7 heuristics for Web3 interface design” highlights feedback after actions, security and trust, understandable terms, visible network connections, and user control in the interface. These are useful prompts for testing; they do not prove that a particular product is secure or usable.
Protect participants and their data
Make risky tasks safe
State plainly that researchers will never need a participant’s seed phrase, password, login details, remote-control access, or money. Kraken’s participant guidance explicitly rules out these requests. Do not ask someone to transact with real funds to make a session feel realistic. Prefer a non-production prototype, test network, dummy account, or researcher-controlled demonstration environment. If a real-world risk cannot be reproduced safely, use screenshots, a prototype, or a walkthrough to test comprehension instead.

Minimize collection and keep records off-chain
Explain what you collect and why, who can access it, whether the session is recorded, and how findings will be used. Collect only what is needed for the question; where practical, keep contact details separate from notes, restrict recording access, and set a retention and deletion process. Tell participants about any limits to confidentiality before the session. The Bitcoin Design Guide frames research as a collaboration requiring upfront disclosure, respect for privacy, and transparency about how results are used.
Treat wallet addresses, transaction details, IP addresses, and information linked to them as potentially sensitive. The European Data Protection Board’s 2025 Guidelines 02/2025 explain that blockchain interactions can expose identifiers, transaction payloads, and additional information such as IP addresses, and that wallet or dApp activity may involve personal data. The guidance says personal data generally should not be included in transaction content and notes the technical difficulty of rectification or erasure once personal data is recorded on-chain. Keep research records off-chain; a public ledger is not a research database. The EDPB guidance concerns the EU data-protection context, so teams should assess the rules applicable to their own jurisdictions and study.
Analyze findings without overstating them
Keep observations distinct from interpretations and recommendations. For each finding, record what the participant did, said, misunderstood, or expected; then note what the team thinks it means and how confident it is. Compare patterns across relevant participant types and tasks rather than treating one person’s experience as a universal rule.

Completion, abandonment, error, and time measures can help teams track a workflow, but interpret them alongside participants’ explanations and the conditions under which the test took place. Likewise, on-chain activity can help examine some aggregate network behavior, but a pseudonymous address does not by itself identify a participant or reveal intent. What activity is visible also depends on layer architecture: base-layer records and payment-channel activity do not expose identical information. Do not join wallet histories to research notes unless there is a clear, disclosed, privacy-reviewed need. The Bitcoin Design Guide and EDPB guidance describe these limits and risks.
Turn findings into decisions, then repeat
Prioritize issues by the user problem, its impact on the task, the risk of harm or loss, and how many relevant participants encountered it. For each priority, name the product decision or design change it should inform, then retest important changes with the intended audience. Research can become outdated as products, protocols, regulation, and user experience change; the Bitcoin Design Guide notes that research may become obsolete as technology and audiences develop.
