Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo use two external monitors with an HP EliteBook dock, connect each screen to a compatible dock video output, attach the dock to the EliteBook’s supported USB-C or Thunderbolt port, then press Windows+P and select Extend. Whether both screens work—and at what resolution and refresh rate—depends on the exact EliteBook, dock, port combination, and monitors. The dock’s connector count alone does not establish what the laptop can drive.
Check compatibility before connecting the screens
Find the full EliteBook product name and generation, the dock’s exact model or SKU, and each monitor’s inputs and target resolution/refresh rate. Then consult the notebook’s product documentation and the dock’s Quick Setup Poster or User Guide. HP specifically directs users to those dock documents to confirm the supported monitor count.

Check these details in the documentation:
- How many external displays the EliteBook supports through its host port.
- Whether the dock connects over USB-C, Thunderbolt, or USB4, and which EliteBook port supports that connection.
- Which resolutions and refresh rates are supported when two displays are connected at once.
- Whether particular dock ports cannot be used together in a given display mode.
- Whether a USB-C-to-DisplayPort adapter or another specific connection method is needed.
For example, HP lists the Elite USB-C Dock G3 as supporting one display up to 4K (4096 × 2160) at 60 Hz, two displays up to 2K (2560 × 1600) at 60 Hz, or three displays up to FHD (1920 × 1200) at 60 Hz. HP also cautions that the actual configuration depends on the computer platform’s video-out capability. Those figures describe that dock and its compatible systems—not every EliteBook and dock combination. See HP’s Elite USB-C Dock G3 specifications.
Connect both monitors and extend the desktop
- Connect each screen to a supported dock output. Match the monitor’s input to an available dock output with the appropriate cable or adapter. Depending on the dock, this may be HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C-to-DisplayPort, or a supported Thunderbolt daisy-chain arrangement. The Thunderbolt 4 100W G6 Dock, for example, lists HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4, USB-C adapter connections, and Thunderbolt daisy-chaining of compatible monitors. Follow your own dock’s port map; these connections are not available on every model. Review HP’s Thunderbolt 4 100W G6 Dock features.
- Connect and power the dock as its guide directs. HP’s general setup sequence is to attach peripherals to the dock, then connect the dock to the computer. Use the EliteBook port specified for the dock, and connect the dock’s power supply if required. See HP’s docking station setup and troubleshooting tips.
- Choose an extended desktop in Windows. Press Windows+P, then select Extend. In Windows display settings, arrange the screen icons to match the monitors’ physical positions and select an available resolution and refresh rate for each display.
Extend gives you separate work areas across the displays. Duplicate mirrors the same image, while Second screen only turns off the notebook display. HP documents these Windows projection modes in its dock setup and troubleshooting guidance.

Understand resolution and port limits
Two screens do not guarantee two 4K screens
Dual 4K at 60 Hz is model- and configuration-dependent. HP’s support notice says the Thunderbolt USB-C port cannot support two 4K UHD (3840 × 2160) DisplayPort 1.4 monitors at 60 Hz for the EliteBook and workstation configurations covered by that notice. HP attributes this limit to graphics bandwidth, not necessarily a dock defect. The notice lists affected systems and gives a model-specific workaround: change the monitor’s DisplayPort mode from DP 1.4 to DP 1.2 using the monitor’s instructions. Do not assume that workaround applies to other hardware. Check HP’s dual-4K support notice and its affected configurations.
A newer dock’s maximum may exceed the laptop’s
HP describes the Thunderbolt 4 100W G6 Dock as supporting up to four external displays, with high-resolution mode requiring host support for DisplayPort 1.4 DSC. That dock capability does not mean an older EliteBook can drive four displays or a particular resolution. The host computer’s graphics and port capabilities remain part of the limit. Review the G6 Dock’s display requirements.

- COMPATIBILITY WITHOUT CONSTRAINTS – Designed with universal compatibility in mind, this dock works with both HP and non-HP USB-C- and Thunderbolt-enabled laptops (1).
- CLEAR THE CLUTTER – Avoid a messy desk as the dock cuts down on extra cords or easily tangled wires.
- SINGLE-CABLE SOLUTION – Add your accessories and up to three displays to the dock (3). Then simply connect it to your laptop through a single USB-C cable to access your devices and charge your PC (1).
- SMALL FOOTPRINT – Reclaim your desk with a compact dock that takes up only 5 x 5 inches of space.
- EASILY MANAGE YOUR ENVIRONMENT – Help secure and remotely manage your laptop as this dock gives you more access and visibility with advanced network manageability features (1).
Some ports or modes may be mutually exclusive
On certain docks, using one port can affect whether another is available for a particular display combination. HP’s G6 troubleshooting guidance calls out mutually exclusive ports and bandwidth limits for some high-resolution setups. Use the port map and configuration instructions for your exact dock rather than assuming all video connectors can be used simultaneously. See HP’s G6 Dock troubleshooting guidance.
Troubleshoot a missing second monitor

- Confirm the monitor is on the correct input. Use the monitor’s controls to select the HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C input connected to the dock. Reseat both ends of the cable.
- Try another supported dock output. Consult the dock’s port map first, since some combinations may be limited or mutually exclusive. If you use an adapter, verify that it supports the monitor connection and mode you need.
- Check the dock-to-EliteBook connection. Ensure the cable is fully seated in the correct host port. For the specific issue covered by HP’s G4/G6 article, a USB-C monitor may fail when the dock is connected to a non-Thunderbolt port with multiple displays attached. HP advises using the computer’s Thunderbolt/USB4 port for full display capability; for systems without Thunderbolt/USB4, it advises moving the monitor from the dock’s Thunderbolt downstream port to another available USB-C port. Apply this only if the article covers your hardware. Check the affected G4/G6 connection scenario.
- Check Windows projection and display settings. Press Windows+P and select Extend. Open Windows display settings to see whether the missing screen is detected and to arrange the displays.
- Update software and firmware as HP instructs. HP recommends updating software, hardware, and drivers; some Thunderbolt docks may also require a BIOS update. Use the instructions and updates for the exact EliteBook and dock model rather than installing updates intended for a different system.
- Verify the supported display mode. If the second screen appears but cannot use the desired resolution or refresh rate, check the notebook and dock documentation for the two-display combination. Review any model-specific bandwidth limitation or monitor DisplayPort-mode guidance.
HP’s general recommendations for dock connection and updating are in its dock setup and troubleshooting guidance; port and display behavior can vary by dock and computer.

If the display count or mode remains unclear, provide the full EliteBook product name and generation, dock model or SKU, both monitor models, the cable or adapter types, and the resolution and refresh rate you want on each screen. Those details let HP’s manuals and support pages establish whether the combination is supported rather than relying on the number of connectors alone.
