Acorn RISC Machine was the original name of Acorn’s ARM processor project. The name later changed context: in November 1990, the company formed around the technology was called Advanced RISC Machines Ltd. Both phrases explain “ARM,” but they refer to different stages of its history.
What does Acorn RISC Machine mean?
Arm Education describes the name directly: “This secret project was named ‘Acorn RISC Machine’ (ARM, in short).” It was the name of a processor project at Acorn, undertaken because the company found existing microprocessors unsuitable for its future computers. Arm Education’s history explains the original expansion.

In the name, RISC stands for “Reduced Instruction Set Computing.” It identifies the design approach named by the project acronym; the expansion alone does not establish a particular performance advantage. Arm’s architecture history gives this expansion.
How did the name change?
| When | Name | What it referred to |
|---|---|---|
| Acorn project, beginning around late 1983 or early 1984 | Acorn RISC Machine | Acorn’s processor project. Arm Community places its start around this period. Arm Community history |
| November 1990 | Advanced RISC Machines Ltd | The company founded as a joint venture of Acorn Computers, Apple Computer, and VLSI Technology. Arm’s company history |
The original project name and the later corporate name are related, but they are not interchangeable descriptions of the same moment. Arm Community notes that the retained “Arm” name subsequently ceased to stand for an expansion.

When was the first ARM processor made?
ARM1 silicon was produced in April 1985. Arm’s programmer’s guide credits a design team at Acorn led by Sophie Wilson and Steve Furber. Arm Community gives the specific delivery date as 26 April 1985, when it says the first chip was delivered to Acorn. Arm’s Cortex-A Series Programmer’s Guide, Version 4.0 provides the design and production context; the Arm Community account supplies the delivery date.
The processor was intended to run programs on Acorn computers, including word processing, spreadsheet calculations, and graphics rendering, according to Arm’s official history. In 1987, the Acorn Archimedes became the first system to showcase the architecture, as described in Arm’s architecture retrospective.

Both expansions appear in the history, but they belong to different contexts: Acorn RISC Machine was the original project name, while Advanced RISC Machines Ltd was the company name adopted when the venture was founded in November 1990. In later usage, “Arm” is the name itself rather than an acronym that needs expanding.
