1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou can use Restreamer on a Raspberry Pi to publish a camera or other video source as a YouTube live stream. The documented setup is Raspberry Pi OS, Docker, a Restreamer container, a configured input and audio channel, and YouTube publication. The Raspberry Pi hosts Restreamer; YouTube receives the live feed. This makes continuous streaming a goal, not a guaranteed uptime result: the official documentation does not publish an endurance test or uptime guarantee.
What you need before you start
- A supported Raspberry Pi: Restreamer’s current Raspberry Pi installation guide recommends Raspberry Pi 3 or Pi 4 and lists Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+, Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, and Raspberry Pi 4 Model B as verified models. It describes ARM32v7 and ARM64v8 container options. This is a compatibility list, not a comparison of sustained encoding performance.
- Raspberry Pi OS and a memory card: the installation guide calls for installing the latest Raspberry Pi OS image on a memory card.
- Docker: install it using the Debian ARM instructions linked from the Restreamer guide.
- A video source: this may be a Pi camera, USB video device, network stream, or an existing RTMP/SRT source.
- YouTube live access and a stream key: create or select the YouTube live stream in YouTube Studio and use its stream key in Restreamer’s publication setup. Keep the key private.
- A reliable power and network setup: the official documentation does not specify a minimum bandwidth, power draw, or thermal requirement, so validate your own system under the conditions in which it will run.
Install Restreamer on the Raspberry Pi
- Install Raspberry Pi OS. Write the latest Raspberry Pi OS image to the memory card and boot the Pi. Complete the initial OS setup and connect it to your network.
- Install Docker for Debian ARM. Follow the installation instructions linked in the official Restreamer Raspberry Pi guide. Avoid relying on an old copied command or image tag; use the guide’s current container instructions for your architecture.
- Start the appropriate Restreamer container. The guide documents persistent configuration at
/core/configand data at/core/data, along with the ports for the web interface and RTMP/RTMPS and SRT services. Use the current guide’s run example for the image variant and port mappings you need. It shows a hardware-support image for arm32v7 and a standard image for arm32v7 and arm64v8. - Use privileged mode only if required. Restreamer warns that
--privilegedshould be used only when hardware support is needed. Do not add it automatically; follow the current guide and your chosen input path. - Open the web interface. Find the Pi’s address on your local network and visit
http://device-ip:8080/ui, replacingdevice-ipwith that address. If the page does not open, check that the container is running, the web port is published, and the address is reachable from your browser.
Choose and configure the video source
Restreamer’s setup wizard documentation describes multiple input paths. A Pi camera is needed only if you choose the direct Pi-camera path; it is not required to relay an IP camera or an existing stream.

Common input choices
- Raspberry Pi camera: select the active Raspberry Pi camera input. The official user-guide index links to a Raspberry Pi camera guide.
- USB video device: choose the connected USB video input.
- Network video: the wizard documents HTTP, HTTPS (including HLS and DASH), RTP, RTSP, RTMP, and SRT inputs.
- Existing internal feed: the wizard includes hardware/internal RTMP and an internal SRT server pathway. This can suit a source already sending a feed to the Pi.
Select a video profile that is available from your chosen source. The documentation does not provide a Raspberry Pi model-by-model throughput table, so it cannot establish which Pi will process every source or profile successfully. If the source is already encoded, relay behavior may differ from a workflow that requires processing; verify the actual profile and output in your own setup.
Set audio, metadata, and YouTube publication
- Configure audio in the wizard. Restreamer offers enabled sound, disabled sound, or a silent audio channel. Its documentation recommends a silent channel when the source has no sound and notes that some services, including YouTube, require an active audio channel. Check YouTube’s ingest preview and use a valid source audio track or a silent channel as appropriate.
- Enter video metadata and publication details. The wizard asks for video metadata and a publication license. Provide accurate information for the content you are streaming and choose the appropriate license.
- Set YouTube as the destination. Restreamer’s user-guide index says a configured source can be sent to YouTube through the Publication Service. Follow the current YouTube publication guide linked there for its interface-specific fields; those fields can change, so do not assume a particular label or encoder setting from an older tutorial.
- Use your YouTube stream key securely. Copy the key from the YouTube live setup into the publication configuration. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that stream, so do not post it publicly or include it in screenshots.
- Confirm the incoming feed in YouTube Studio. Verify that YouTube receives the expected picture and audio before relying on the stream. If YouTube reports no audio, revisit the wizard’s audio step and ensure the chosen source or silent channel is active.
What “continuous” means—and what it does not
The installation and repository documentation cover container setup, persistent directories, and restart behavior, but do not promise uninterrupted operation for a particular duration. A working setup can still be interrupted by a power loss, network outage, source failure, device restart, overheating, or a YouTube-side disconnect. The documented restart option and persistent configuration/data directories can help with recovery after a process or device restart; they are not an uptime guarantee.

Before treating the Pi as unattended, test the source, selected profile, audio, network connection, and recovery behavior for your own use. Confirm what happens after the source stops, the container restarts, the Pi reboots, and YouTube drops the connection. The official sources do not publish a measured endurance result, thermal limit, bandwidth threshold, or maximum continuous run time for a particular Pi model.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| Restreamer’s web page does not load | Confirm that the container started, the web interface port is published, and you opened http://device-ip:8080/ui using the Pi’s reachable network address. |
| Camera or device is not available | Confirm that the intended input path matches the connected source. A Pi camera is only needed for the Pi-camera input; USB, network, RTMP, and SRT inputs have separate paths. For hardware access, consult the current installation guide and apply privileged mode only when needed. |
| Network source will not connect | Check that the URL and protocol match the source and that the source is reachable from the Pi. The wizard documents HTTP, HTTPS/HLS/DASH, RTP, RTSP, RTMP, and SRT, but not every source-specific compatibility detail. |
| YouTube shows no audio | Return to the audio setup step. Enable valid source audio or configure a silent audio channel where the source has no sound, then check the YouTube ingest preview. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Check the Publication Service destination and stream key, ensure the key corresponds to the intended YouTube live stream, and verify the incoming status in YouTube Studio. Do not expose the key when asking for help. |
| The stream stops after a reboot or process failure | Check the container’s restart behavior and confirm configuration and data are mapped to persistent locations as documented. Restart behavior aids recovery but does not prevent failures or guarantee continuous service. |
Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
Restreamer carries a source to YouTube; it does not grant rights to the video or music. Stream only material you own, have permission to use, or are otherwise legally entitled to broadcast. YouTube may identify copyrighted material or restrict a live stream. Also consider whether repeatedly broadcasting prerecorded material fits YouTube’s applicable channel and monetization policies; check YouTube’s current rules before building a channel around looping content. Use accurate metadata and do not treat successful ingest as proof that the content is permitted.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video live on YouTube without leaving a Raspberry Pi or another computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
