Run a small Node.js and Playwright job on a Linux VPS, then schedule it with cron or a systemd timer. The reliable approach is to pin Playwright, install its matching Chromium and system dependencies, define a clear page-ready condition, save dated files, and log failures. There is no independently verified minimum VPS size for this workload: page complexity and capture settings matter, so start with one page at a time and measure your own server before increasing concurrency.
What you need before you start
- A Linux VPS running a supported Debian or Ubuntu release on x86-64 or arm64. Playwright’s current installation documentation lists Debian 12/13 and Ubuntu 22.04/24.04/26.04 as supported systems: Playwright installation documentation.
- Node.js and npm, plus SSH access to the server.
- Permission to capture each target website. Keep credentials out of source control and protect stored images if they contain personal or confidential information.
Use a stable viewport, timezone, browser version, and capture configuration if you compare screenshots over time. Screenshots can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, and headless mode; identical code does not guarantee pixel-identical output across different environments. package-lock.json. On later deployments, usenpm cito install the locked dependency set rather than allowing an unplanned version change.

TARGET_URL='https://example.com' READY_SELECTOR='main h1' node capture.jsdomcontentloaded is a starting point, not a universal signal that a page is visually complete. Prefer a selector tied to the content you need. A fixed sleep can be unreliable because page speed and asynchronous content vary. If the target uses lazy-loaded images, decide whether to scroll before capturing or use a full-page capture; the right readiness logic depends on the page.
Viewport or full-page capture
The example saves the current viewport. To capture the full scrollable page, change the screenshot call to:

Full-page images can be extremely tall, so use them only when the full document is needed. Choose either cron or a systemd timer. Start with a daily run and a single capture process; scheduling is a standard Linux operations choice, not a guarantee of capacity for any particular VPS.

Check the log after the scheduled time. Cron has a limited environment, so use absolute paths and define any required environment variables in the command or a protected configuration file.

Compare recurring total cost and operational fit across these factors:
- Memory and CPU: Chromium usage varies with page complexity, browser settings, and simultaneous work. Check whether CPU allocation is shared; the advertised vCPU count alone does not establish performance.
- Storage: Estimate screenshot size multiplied by capture frequency and retention time, then leave room for the operating system, browser, logs, and temporary files.
- Transfer and location: Check the monthly allowance, port limits, and datacenter location relative to the target sites and your users.
- Billing and support: Confirm currency, GST, introductory versus renewal price, included backups, restore process, support coverage, and any workload restrictions.
No named plan has been established as the least expensive reliable choice for a particular page or schedule. Test the actual pages on the candidate server before raising concurrency or committing to a long retention period.

- Keep captures from overwriting one another. Timestamped names preserve history; if you need one file per day, use a date-based naming scheme and define how to handle reruns.
- Use timeouts and return failure status. The script exits nonzero on navigation or screenshot errors, and cron logs output to a known file. Check logs rather than treating a scheduled invocation as proof of a successful capture.
- Begin serially. One browser process and one target at a time gives you a baseline. Increase parallel work only after observing memory use, runtime, and failure rates on your own pages.
- Manage retention and free space. Set a retention policy and monitor disk headroom. A basic cleanup command for files older than 30 days, run from the project directory, is
find captures -type f -mtime +30 -delete; confirm the directory and policy before automating deletion. - Control visual variation. Keep the operating system, Playwright/browser version, viewport, timezone, and capture settings stable. For dynamic pages, define which content must be ready and whether animations or changing elements need to be handled; Playwright’s visual guidance documents style overrides.
- Protect sensitive output. Restrict file permissions and access, avoid storing secrets in the script, and rotate or delete captures that may contain personal or confidential data.
