The encoder sends a lecture file or playlist to YouTube’s ingest URL with your stream key; systemd can restart the encoder after a process failure. This is not a native YouTube setting that turns an ordinary upload into a live broadcast, and it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted stream if the host, network, source files, credentials, or YouTube service fail.
What you need before setting up the service
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable and confirm it before your planned start. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A Linux host that can remain powered on, an encoder such as FFmpeg, and a stable upload connection. YouTube says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.”
- A lecture file or playlist prepared so playback can continue when a file ends. Choose and test a looping or playlist method supported by the encoder and media you use; YouTube’s documentation does not prescribe a particular FFmpeg loop command.
- Access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to create or schedule the stream and obtain its ingest URL and stream key.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to reach the Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one for later. Scheduling can create a watch page and let viewers set reminders.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the Live Control Room. The encoder needs both to connect to YouTube. Follow the current YouTube encoder setup instructions for the available settings and screen labels.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not put it in a public script, source repository, shared log, or file readable by unrelated users. Store it in a configuration file readable only by root or the dedicated service account that runs the encoder.
- If you believe the key has been exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room and update the service configuration. The old key should no longer be treated as secret or safe to use; YouTube explains stream key management in its encoder guide.
Prepare a reliable encoder input and output
Make playback continuous
Before involving systemd, test the encoder manually with the actual lecture files and playlist approach you intend to use. Confirm that playback advances or loops as intended instead of exiting when the first recording ends. A systemd restart policy can restart an exited process, but repeatedly restarting a process at every file boundary is not a substitute for a deliberately configured playlist or loop.

Match YouTube’s ingest settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. Its settings page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codec options, CBR encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval recommendation; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Which codec and settings are available depends on the ingest method and encoder, so check the current YouTube live encoder settings and confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the selected combination.

Set an output bitrate that stays below the upload bandwidth actually available to the Linux host. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom. Measure sustained upload capacity under realistic conditions, including other devices or workloads sharing the connection; a speed test at an otherwise idle moment may not represent continuous capacity.

Keep credentials out of command history and logs
Do not paste a full streaming URL containing the key into a command that may be saved in shell history or logged. Use a protected configuration or environment file and ensure that the encoder can read it as the service user. Keep permissions narrow, and avoid options that print secrets to the journal.
Run the encoder under systemd
Use systemd to supervise the encoder, not to decide whether YouTube is receiving a healthy broadcast. A persistent service should have an explicit user, stable working directory, absolute executable path, protected configuration, and a restart policy. The systemd project identifies Restart=on-failure or Restart=on-abnormal as suitable recommendations for long-running services in its project NEWS. The example below is a template, not a verified, distro-specific FFmpeg recipe: adapt its paths, account, configuration format, and command to the Linux distribution, FFmpeg build, and media input, then test it on the target host.

- Put the encoder invocation in a local script or configuration that reads the protected stream URL/key and starts your tested lecture playlist. Use absolute paths for the executable and media files. Make the script executable and readable only by the appropriate administrator or service account.
- Create a unit file such as
/etc/systemd/system/lecture-stream.service. /usr/local/bin/lecture-streamrepresents your own tested launcher; it is not an FFmpeg command supplied by YouTube. Confirm the service user can read the media and secret configuration, and cannot read files it does not need. sudo systemctl daemon-reload, thensudo systemctl enable --now lecture-stream.service. - Check process status with
systemctl status lecture-stream.serviceand inspect recent output withjournalctl -u lecture-stream.service -n 100 --no-pager. The journal can reveal local process or file errors, but should not contain the stream key. - For a controlled recovery test, stop the encoder process and confirm that systemd restarts it; then check the Live Control Room to see whether YouTube accepts the reconnect. A local process restart alone does not establish that the public broadcast remained seamless.
Verify the live feed and plan for long sessions
After starting the service, open the Live Control Room preview and check that video and audio are present and that YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream. YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and audio and monitoring stream health during the event; see its live streaming tips. A service can be active while the feed is black, silent, stalled, or rejected by YouTube, so systemd status is only one part of the check.

YouTube automatically archives streams that are under 12 hours. For a 24/7 operation, decide how you will handle sessions and archives, and verify the result in YouTube Studio. Do not assume a service restart creates one continuous broadcast or a single archive for a stream that runs longer than this stated limit. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
Troubleshooting common failures
