You can run prerecorded IIT lecture videos continuously by hosting the files and an encoder such as FFmpeg on an always-on Linux VPS, then sending the output to YouTube Live using the channel’s stream URL and private stream key. First confirm you have permission to retransmit the specific recordings: technical access, educational intent, and public availability do not establish copyright permission or monetization eligibility.
1. Confirm you can rebroadcast the lectures
Before renting or configuring a server, identify the exact IIT, course, recording, and rights holder. Check the recording’s license and obtain authorization for YouTube retransmission, including relevant territories and archived replays if applicable. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights; its terms state, “The Live Content must comply with the YouTube Community Guidelines.” YouTube Livestream terms and conditions.

- Do not infer permission from a lecture being freely accessible, educational, or already posted on YouTube.
- If a recording may match YouTube Content ID, ask the rights holder whether they can allowlist your channel.
- Keep evidence of the license or authorization and confirm it covers continuous rebroadcast, not just personal viewing or classroom use.
2. Prepare YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room. Create a stream from the Stream tab, or schedule one under Manage. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow for activation to take up to 24 hours.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into your encoder configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in a script, repository, screenshot, or support post. Use a restricted configuration file or secret-management mechanism and replace the key if it is exposed.
- Choose whether the stream should be private, unlisted, or public for testing and publication. Confirm the final visibility and schedule in Live Control Room.
YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours. For a continuous operation, plan how to segment broadcasts and manage their separate replays; do not assume one uninterrupted 24/7 session will be archived as a single complete video. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
3. Choose VPS capacity based on the actual workload
The VPS hosts Linux, the lecture files (if stored there), and the encoder process. There is no universal CPU, memory, disk, or bandwidth size for this job: requirements depend on whether FFmpeg copies or transcodes the media, the stream bitrate, file sizes, and the VPS provider’s limits. Check the provider’s storage, sustained network egress, transfer allowances, and policies before committing.

- Copying compatible streams: If the source codecs and stream characteristics are acceptable to YouTube, copying audio and video avoids a computationally expensive re-encode. Validate the source and output rather than assuming every file is compatible.
- Transcoding: Re-encoding can standardize output settings but increases CPU or hardware-encoder requirements. Test the specific files on the selected VPS before relying on it for continuous operation.
- Storage and transfer: Estimate the size of the lecture library and the outgoing bitrate. A provider’s storage capacity and traffic policy can be as important as CPU for a long-running stream.
4. Match YouTube’s ingest settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder delivery. Its current guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Choose a video bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than borrowing an unrelated tutorial’s number. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
RTMPS is RTMP carried over SSL/TLS. For RTMPS-specific endpoint details, Google’s API documentation specifies an ingestion endpoint and port 443: YouTube Live RTMPS documentation. Use the endpoint and stream URL YouTube provides for the session; do not substitute an arbitrary server address.

5. Configure FFmpeg without exposing the stream key
FFmpeg is a practical command-line encoder on Linux, but the appropriate command depends on the installed FFmpeg build and the input video’s codecs, frame rate, resolution, and audio tracks. YouTube documents the encoder workflow generically; it does not certify a universal FFmpeg command for every file. Inspect the media, verify the available FFmpeg encoders, and select either stream copy or a tested transcode that conforms to the settings above.
Use a schematic command only as a template, replacing the input, chosen processing options, and destination with values validated for your setup:

This example is not a compatibility guarantee. Stream copying works only when the source streams can be delivered in a format and configuration accepted by YouTube; a file with unsuitable codecs, timing, or audio may need a tested transcode. Keep the actual key out of shell history, logs, and published scripts. A safer deployment can read the destination from a file readable only by the service account or from a secrets mechanism, with access restricted to that process.

6. Keep the encoder running and monitor it
A VPS stays available independently of your personal computer, but the VPS, network path, FFmpeg process, and YouTube ingest can still fail. A Linux service supervisor such as systemd can start the encoder at boot and restart it after an exit; that alone does not guarantee a continuous stream or confirm that YouTube is receiving healthy audio and video.
- Configure a systemd service or equivalent supervisor using the actual paths, service account, and secret configuration for your VPS.
- Test restart behavior after a process exit and after a server reboot. Validate how the encoder reconnects if YouTube drops the ingest connection.
- Monitor process state, VPS resource use, outgoing network traffic, and stream health in Live Control Room. Arrange alerts for failures that require intervention.
- Check the lecture playlist or loop behavior, audio/video synchronization, and transitions between files during a sufficiently long test.
7. Test privately before scheduling continuous playback
- Start with a short private or unlisted test, as appropriate for your channel and rights.
- Open the Live Control Room preview and inspect stream health, picture, sound, synchronization, and whether the selected ingest is receiving data.
- Observe at least one file transition and test the recovery behavior you intend to rely on. Resolve errors before making the stream public.
- Schedule or publish the intended stream in Live Control Room, then keep monitoring it. A process running on the VPS is not proof that a healthy broadcast is reaching viewers.
Copyright permission is separate from monetization
Permission to rebroadcast does not guarantee that a channel can monetize the result. YouTube says live-stream monetization is available to channels in the YouTube Partner Program, subject to its policies. Its reused-content rules also apply to live streams: minimally changed or repetitive material may be ineligible even when the channel has permission from the rights holder. Meaningful original commentary, substantive modification, or additional educational or entertainment value can matter to that review. See YouTube channel monetization policies.

Cost and operating trade-offs
A VPS workflow gives you control over Linux, files, encoding, process supervision, and monitoring, but its recurring costs and resource needs vary with the provider and workload. Compare storage, network egress, resolution and bitrate, whether transcoding is needed, restart and alerting facilities, and the provider’s terms. YouTube’s own help documentation also describes cloud-based tools for 24/7 prerecorded streaming; assess any service’s terms and capabilities before relying on it. No universal VPS price or specification follows from the stream settings alone.
