Run Playwright visual regression tests in Bitbucket Pipelines inside a Playwright Docker image that matches your project’s Playwright version, install dependencies with your lockfile, and start with one worker in CI. Use toHaveScreenshot() to compare pages with committed reference images, then retain reports and failure output as pipeline artifacts so reviewers can inspect changes.
Configure a Bitbucket Pipelines step for Playwright
Playwright recommends using its public Docker image in Bitbucket Pipelines. The following is a Node.js example using the documented image tag mcr.microsoft.com/playwright:v1.63.0-noble. Treat that tag as a versioned example: align the image version with the Playwright package installed by your project, and adjust the package manager, artifact paths, and test command to match your repository.

- playwright-report/**Put this configuration in bitbucket-pipelines.yml at the repository root. The step uses a Docker image, runs commands from the script, optionally caches Node dependencies, and retains the listed artifact paths. The node cache is only an example; use a cache appropriate to the repository. Artifact paths are relative to the clone directory.

Make the image and project versions agree
The Docker image provides a controlled browser environment, but it must stay aligned with the Playwright version in the project. If the project’s Playwright dependency changes, review the image tag too. Version mismatch can undermine reproducibility and cause browser or test-runner compatibility problems.

Install dependencies and run the tests
npm ci installs the versions recorded by the npm lockfile, while npx playwright test runs the Playwright Test suite. Keep the lockfile committed and use the corresponding install command for another package manager. The pipeline step needs enough runner resources for the chosen test workload; no single runner size or worker count is right for every project.
Add a screenshot comparison and create its baseline
Use Playwright Test’s screenshot assertion to compare a page with a reference image:

});Replace the example URL with the page your test should cover. On its first run, Playwright creates the reference screenshot. Review that image and commit the generated snapshot directory to version control. Subsequent runs compare the captured page against the committed reference. Set the snapshot output location in your Playwright configuration if you want it somewhere other than Playwright’s default.

Keep the page state stable
Before capturing, ensure the page has reached the state the test is intended to verify. Data, animations, time-dependent text, or other volatile content can produce diffs that do not reflect a meaningful product change. Prefer controlling test data and page state. Playwright also supports a stylesheet option to hide or neutralize genuinely irrelevant dynamic elements; avoid masking content whose visual changes matter to the test.
Make screenshot results reproducible in CI
Screenshot output can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and compare baselines in the same controlled environment: use the same operating system and browser environment, the matching Playwright version, and consistent relevant settings. A baseline produced locally in a different environment may create noise when compared with a CI capture.
Use one worker as the starting point
Playwright recommends setting workers to 1 in CI to prioritize stability and reproducibility. Add this to your Playwright configuration if you want the setting explicit:

Update baselines as reviewed changes
When an intentional UI change requires new references, run npx playwright test --update-snapshots, inspect the resulting image changes, and commit only the approved updates. Do not make snapshot updates an automatic response to every CI diff: doing so can accept unintended visual regressions as the new baseline.
Keep reports and failure output available for review
Bitbucket artifacts let a pipeline step retain files such as Playwright reports and test output for later inspection. The example configuration saves test-results/** and playwright-report/**; make sure those directories match where your tests actually write files. Artifact paths must be inside BITBUCKET_CLONE_DIR.

Atlassian documents a maximum artifact retention of 14 days and a 1 GB size limit. These are service limits, so check Atlassian’s current documentation if your retention or storage needs depend on them. Keep only the files reviewers need, particularly if full-page screenshots or reports make artifacts large.
Browser caching is optional
Playwright generally does not recommend caching browser binaries because restoring the cache can take about as long as downloading the binaries. If you choose to cache them, key the cache against the Playwright version so a browser cache from a different version is not reused accidentally.

- Tests pass locally but fail in CI with screenshot diffs: check whether the baseline and CI capture use the same operating system, browser version, Playwright version, settings, and headless mode. Stabilize test data and page state before changing snapshots.
- Browser launch or missing-browser errors: confirm the pipeline step uses a Playwright image appropriate for the project’s installed Playwright version. Review the image tag and dependency versions together.
- Tests are flaky or behave differently under load: begin with one worker in CI. Increase concurrency only after checking runner capacity and the stability of parallel execution.
- Artifacts are missing: verify the configured output directory and make the artifact glob match it. Paths must be relative to the clone directory and remain inside
BITBUCKET_CLONE_DIR. - Artifact upload exceeds a limit: check the current artifact size and retention limits, then reduce the files retained or adjust the reporting approach. Atlassian’s documented limits are 1 GB and 14 days.
- Browser-cache restore does not save time: Playwright notes that restoring browser binaries can take about as long as downloading them. Remove that cache if it is not beneficial; if retained, key it by Playwright version.
- Snapshot updates unexpectedly replace references: ensure
--update-snapshotsis not part of the normal CI test command. Run it deliberately and review the image diffs before committing.
