How to Run Playwright Screenshot Tests in Jenkins for an Indian Development Team

A practical Jenkins guide to Playwright visual tests: configure the Docker image and package versions, manage screenshot baselines, set India-relevant browser behavior, and troubleshoot CI differences.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run Playwright screenshot tests in Jenkins on a consistent Linux environment: use a versioned Playwright Docker image compatible with the Playwright package in your lockfile, install dependencies with npm ci, and run npx playwright test. Start with one CI worker, commit reviewed screenshot baselines, and configure browser locale and timezone to match the behavior your product actually serves in India.

How to run Playwright screenshot tests in Jenkins

Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion compares a page capture with a stored reference image. It waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing, which helps avoid capturing a page while it is still changing. See the Playwright visual comparisons guide.

Add a screenshot assertion

For example, add a test such as this to a Playwright Test spec:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('home page visual appearance', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home-page.png');
});

Replace the example URL and filename with the page and stable name relevant to your application. Ensure the page reaches the state you intend to compare before the assertion—for example, complete any required navigation or user interaction.

Start with a stable Jenkins pipeline

Playwright’s CI guide includes this Declarative Pipeline pattern for Jenkins:

pipeline {
  agent { docker { image 'mcr.microsoft.com/playwright:v1.63.0-noble' } }
  stages {
    stage('e2e-tests') {
      steps {
        sh 'npm ci'
        sh 'npx playwright test'
      }
    }
  }
}

The v1.63.0-noble tag is the version shown in the guide’s example, not a permanent recommendation. Before using it, check that the image release matches the Playwright package version pinned by your project. Add repository checkout, credentials, and test-report or artifact handling according to your Jenkins installation; this minimal example does not specify those organization-specific details.

Align the browser image and project package

The Playwright container image supplies browsers and system dependencies, but your job still installs the project’s npm package and other dependencies from its lockfile. The image and package versions need to be compatible; otherwise, Playwright may not find the browser executables it expects. Keep the package version locked, use npm ci, and pin the Docker image to a corresponding release. The Docker documentation explains the image and version relationship.

Generate, review, and update screenshot baselines

First run and review

When a reference screenshot is missing, Playwright can create one during the first run. Inspect that generated image before adding it to version control: it becomes the expected appearance against which later runs are compared. Commit reference screenshots alongside the test code so changes can be reviewed with the application changes.

Updating a baseline after an intentional change

When the UI has deliberately changed, use Playwright’s snapshot update mechanism to regenerate the relevant reference image, then review and commit the new image. Do not update snapshots just to make an unexplained CI failure disappear. Compare the expected image, actual output, and diff first; establish whether the change is intended or the run is nondeterministic.

Configure locale and timezone for India-facing behavior

“Indian development team” does not imply one locale for every application. Choose the locale and timezone that represent the product behavior you need to test, and set them in the Playwright browser context or project configuration when they affect displayed content or application behavior. Playwright documents browser context options, including locale and timezone, in its emulation guide.

Keep browser timezone separate from the test runner’s process timezone. If the test process itself needs a timezone, configure TZ for that process; changing the browser context timezone does not set the runner timezone. See Playwright test configuration options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep visual comparisons reproducible before adding parallelism

Playwright recommends one worker in CI by default for stability and reproducibility. Begin with one worker on the Jenkins agent, then consider additional workers or sharding only after checking the capacity and repeatability of the actual machines. Parallel jobs can increase throughput, but they do not compensate for an inconsistent rendering environment.

  • Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.

Keep baseline creation and CI comparison as alike as practical. Rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. A pinned image helps control some of those variables; it does not establish that two unlike environments will produce identical images. See the visual comparison guidance and CI guidance.

Handle visual differences and tolerances deliberately

If a test fails, inspect the expected screenshot, the actual screenshot, and the diff. Confirm the browser image, operating system, viewport, relevant page state, and regional settings are consistent with the environment that generated the baseline. If a small amount of visual variation is known and acceptable, Playwright offers options such as maxDiffPixels and related thresholds. Choose and document a threshold based on an understood product variation; do not use it to mask unexplained changes. The available screenshot assertion options are described in the screenshot assertion documentation.

Choose a Jenkins runner that your team can maintain

A Docker-based Linux agent is a practical starting point when Jenkins can run Docker and pull the required Playwright image. A managed agent with dependencies installed directly may also be possible, but the team must control browser and system dependency updates and keep the rendering environment consistent. Confirm the actual agent capabilities, network and security rules, and ownership of updates with your Jenkins administrators; those details depend on the installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Docker availability: Can the Jenkins agent run containers and pull the pinned image?
  • Environment consistency: Can the team keep the OS and browser build aligned with baseline creation?
  • Dependency ownership: Who updates the image, browser binaries, and system dependencies?
  • Concurrency: Does the agent reliably support more than the one-worker CI default?
  • Network and security: Can the job reach the application and required package or image registries under company policy?

Troubleshoot common screenshot-test failures

Playwright cannot find a browser executable

Likely cause: The package version and the Playwright Docker image are incompatible, or the job is not using the expected image. Fix: Check the installed Playwright version from the lockfile and pin a compatible image release; ensure the Jenkins stage actually runs inside that container.

A screenshot differs on Jenkins but passes locally

Likely cause: The environments differ in OS, browser version, viewport, settings, hardware, headless mode, locale, timezone, or page state. Fix: Compare those inputs and align baseline generation with CI rather than immediately regenerating the baseline or widening a threshold.

A generated baseline appears wrong on the first run

Likely cause: The page was not in the intended state when captured, or the baseline was accepted without review. Fix: Make the test navigate and prepare the page deterministically, rerun it, inspect the generated screenshot, and only then commit it.

Tests are flaky or CI capacity is strained

Likely cause: Multiple workers or jobs are contending for limited agent resources, or the page has not settled consistently. Fix: Return to one worker, stabilize the test state, and measure repeatability and agent capacity before adding workers or shards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dates or text do not match the India-facing product

Likely cause: The test uses a default browser locale or timezone that differs from the intended product behavior, or the runner timezone was assumed to follow the browser setting. Fix: Set the browser context locale/timezone explicitly and set TZ separately if the test process needs it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a browser timezone setting to change Jenkins’s process timezone?

No. Configure the runner process timezone separately with TZ when needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a Jenkins screenshot test replace a visual baseline workflow?

No. Playwright’s screenshot assertion compares against a reviewed reference image; a screenshot API returns captures but does not itself provide that committed-baseline workflow.
