Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRun Playwright screenshot tests inside a pinned Docker environment, using the same Playwright version in your project and container image. Start with Playwright’s official image, install your project dependencies, and run the tests with --init and (for Chromium) --ipc=host. Generate and review screenshot baselines in that same environment so differences in operating system, browser, and rendering settings do not create misleading failures.
Choose a Docker setup that matches your project
The simplest route is Playwright’s official Docker image. It includes browser binaries and the operating-system dependencies those browsers need, but it does not install your project’s Playwright package. Your project must still install its dependencies, usually with npm ci. Keep the image tag and Playwright package version aligned: Playwright warns that mismatched versions can prevent it from finding the browser executables. See the official Playwright Docker guide and CI guide.

docker run --rm --init --ipc=host
-v "$PWD:/work" -w /work
mcr.microsoft.com/playwright:<matching-version>-noble
sh -lc 'npm ci && npx playwright test'
Replace <matching-version> with the release matching the package version in your project. This example uses the Noble image variant shown in the documentation; use an appropriate image tag for your matched release. The --ipc=host option is especially relevant to Chromium, which can otherwise run out of shared memory and crash. The official guide recommends --init to handle processes cleanly in the container.
For repeated CI runs, consider building an application image with project dependencies already installed instead of running npm ci every time. Make sure the CI system preserves the snapshot output and test report paths so you can review them when a job fails.
Build a custom image
A custom image can fit an existing runtime base or install only the browsers your suite needs. This Dockerfile is an illustrative starting point; align the Playwright version in package.json with the installation command, and adapt the Node and base OS versions to your project:
FROM node:20-bookworm
RUN npx -y [email protected] install --with-deps
WORKDIR /app
COPY package*.json ./
RUN npm ci
COPY . .
CMD ["npx", "playwright", "test"]
Playwright’s browser documentation covers installing browser binaries and system dependencies, including browser-specific installs. If you need Firefox or WebKit, do not use Alpine/musl as the base: Playwright says those browser builds target glibc and Alpine is unsupported.
Run the container with suitable runtime settings
- Use
--init. The Docker guide recommends it to avoid process-handling issues associated with a container’s PID 1 process. - Give Chromium adequate shared memory. Use
--ipc=hostas the documented starting point; without enough shared memory, Chromium may crash. - Do not add privileges preemptively. The guide mentions
--cap-add=SYS_ADMINas a development troubleshooting option for unusual Chromium launch errors. Add it only when you have a concrete need. - Understand the default user and sandbox. The official image runs as root by default, which disables Chromium’s sandbox. Playwright says this may be acceptable for trusted end-to-end test code; a non-root user is another option depending on your CI threat model and setup.
Connecting tests to a server on the host
Inside a container, localhost refers to the container, not automatically to the host machine. If a test must reach a server running on the host, follow the Docker guide’s host-gateway mapping approach and use the mapped hostname in the test URL. Do not assume a host-local address will resolve the same way from inside Docker.
Create stable screenshot baselines
Use Playwright Test’s await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() for visual assertions. On an initial run, Playwright waits for the page to stabilize and creates a reference screenshot in the test-specific snapshot directory. Review and commit those files as code. Later runs compare new captures with the committed references.

Generate and compare baselines with the same container image and test configuration. Playwright documents that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Snapshot names encode browser and platform information; project names can also be incorporated. If you intentionally test different browsers or platforms, maintain distinct project-specific baselines where their expected rendering differs rather than treating every difference as noise. See Playwright’s visual comparison documentation.
Control what the test captures
- Wait for meaningful application readiness, such as a key element becoming visible, rather than capturing during an arbitrary loading phase.
- Stabilize dynamic content that is not part of the intended comparison. A screenshot stylesheet can hide or neutralize known volatile elements; Playwright supports
stylePath. - Use comparison thresholds such as
maxDiffPixelsonly for reviewed, expected variation. A generous tolerance can conceal real regressions. - Playwright’s screenshot assertion takes repeated captures until two consecutive screenshots match before saving an initial reference, according to its documentation. This helps with transient rendering changes but does not replace controlling the page’s own dynamic content.
Update snapshots only for intentional changes
When an approved interface change should alter the reference image, regenerate snapshots with:
npx playwright test --update-snapshots
Review the resulting image diffs before committing them. Do not update snapshots simply to make an unexplained CI failure disappear: first determine whether the change is an expected product update or a difference in browser, platform, readiness, or runtime configuration.
Integrate the run into CI
The documented sequence is to install npm dependencies, make the required browser binaries and operating-system dependencies available (or use the Playwright image), then run npx playwright test. Playwright recommends starting with one worker in CI for stability and reproducibility. Increase concurrency only after observing the capacity and behavior of the runner; sharding across jobs is another way to distribute a suite. The official CI documentation includes container-job examples and report artifact guidance.
Browser binary caching is not recommended by the CI guide: restoring browser binaries can take about as long as downloading them, and Linux operating-system dependencies cannot be cached. If you do cache browser binaries, key the cache to the Playwright version so the cached browsers match the package.
For headed Linux debugging, Playwright documents that Xvfb is required and shows xvfb-run npx playwright test. The official image includes Xvfb.

Troubleshoot common Docker screenshot-test failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright cannot find a browser executable | The project package and image/browser installation use different Playwright versions, or the browser was not installed. | Match the image tag, package version, and browser-install command. Confirm the required browser is installed in the image. |
| Chromium crashes or reports memory-related errors | Insufficient shared memory in the container. | Try the documented Chromium setting --ipc=host. |
| Chromium reports an unusual launch error | There may be a container capability or sandbox issue. | Inspect browser launch diagnostics first. The Docker guide identifies --cap-add=SYS_ADMIN as a development troubleshooting option for unusual launch failures; do not add it without a specific reason. Review whether the root default and disabled Chromium sandbox suit your environment. |
| A test cannot reach a host-run web server | Container localhost resolves to the container rather than the host. |
Use the host-gateway mapping pattern in the Docker guide and address the mapped hostname from the test. |
| Screenshots differ in CI but not locally | The environments may differ in OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, or headless mode; dynamic page content can also vary. | Compare baselines in the same pinned image and configuration, wait for application readiness, and control known volatile content before changing comparison thresholds. |
| Browser launch fails in CI | Browser installation, runtime dependencies, or launch configuration may be wrong. | Set DEBUG=pw:browser to inspect launch diagnostics. Verify that the selected image contains the matching browser and system dependencies. |
| Firefox or WebKit fails in an Alpine container | Playwright says these browser builds are built for glibc; Alpine uses musl and is unsupported for them. | Use a supported glibc-based image, such as an appropriate official Playwright image, and align its version with the project. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot of a live page rather than a Playwright visual-regression test suite, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-call API can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It is not a replacement for running your own Playwright assertions and managing their baselines.
For a WebP screenshot, replace the target URL with the page you need:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted before capture and more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

Should I use a browser cache to speed up Playwright CI?
Playwright’s CI guide does not recommend browser binary caching: restore time can be about the same as downloading, and Linux system dependencies are not cacheable. If you cache browser binaries anyway, key the cache to the Playwright version.
Can I run headed Playwright tests in a Linux container?
Yes. Playwright documents using Xvfb for headed Linux runs; the official Playwright image includes it. The documented command form is xvfb-run npx playwright test.
Does the official Playwright Docker image install my project’s npm dependencies?
No. It includes browser binaries and their operating-system dependencies, but your project still needs to install its own Playwright package and dependencies, typically with npm ci.
