Pi is a terminal-based AI agent that can work through files and run commands in a folder you choose. To use it, install Pi, start it in the intended working folder, and connect a model provider. A local model is an option, but Pi can also use subscriptions, API keys, and compatible endpoints—so installing Pi does not by itself make every part of the setup local.
What Pi does—and what “local” means
Pi is a minimal, extensible agent toolkit for working from a terminal. Given a goal and a working folder, it can inspect files, edit content, run commands, and handle multi-step tasks. The project describes potential uses including software development, research notes, writing projects, data files, and hobby work. “Local” can refer to more than one part of the setup. Pi runs as software on your machine and can access files available to the account that launched it. Separately, the model can run locally or be accessed through a subscription, API key, or compatible endpoint. If keeping inference on your own machine is important, select and configure a local model; do not assume that using Pi alone keeps model requests or connected services local. Pi documentation

Pi’s quickstart documents an installer, global npm installation, and Nix on macOS or Linux. Its npm route requires Node.js 22.19 or newer. The installer pins dependencies; the npm route does not pin transitive dependencies. These package details and provider options can change, so check the current quickstart before installing. - Choose an installation route. Follow the current Pi quickstart for the installer, npm, or Nix method appropriate to your system.
- Open the folder Pi should work in. Start Pi from that folder. It helps Pi find relevant files, instructions, and configuration, and groups saved sessions.
- Choose model access. In Pi, use
/loginto select and authenticate with a provider. The documented choices include a subscription, API key, or local model. - Select a model. Use
/modelto change the selected model. - Give Pi a bounded task. State the goal and the relevant files or constraints, then inspect the changes and command results it produces.
The official material reviewed confirms support for local models but does not specify hardware requirements, benchmark results, or a recommended computer or GPU. Requirements depend on the chosen model and runtime; verify those separately before choosing hardware. Pi documentation

- Folder-specific standing instructions: use an
AGENTS.mdfile. - Reusable prompts: use prompt templates.
- Executable tools or event handlers: use extensions.
- Bundles of resources to distribute: use packages.
- Reusable capabilities: use skills.

Run Pi interactively, in scripts, or inside an application
The terminal interface is one way to use Pi, not the only one. Choose an operating mode based on how you want to interact with it:

- RPC mode: control a separate Pi process.

Pi’s default setup omits sub-agents and plan mode. Do not treat either as a built-in default; additional behavior would need to be separately established or added.
Plan permissions and isolation before giving Pi access
Pi’s tools can read and change files and execute commands with the permissions of the account that launched the process. It does not ask before every tool call. Extensions and child processes inherit those permissions unless an operating-system or virtualization boundary restricts them. Project trust controls whether project resources load; it is not a sandbox for tool actions. Pi security documentation

For untrusted tasks, unattended runs, or work that must not reach your full account, use an operating-system or virtualization isolation boundary such as a suitably configured container or another sandbox. Limit the files and services available to the process. Reviewing transcripts or generated diffs can help catch mistakes, but it does not create a security boundary. Pi security documentation

- Whether the model must run locally or a hosted provider is acceptable.
- Whether you want an interactive session, scripted output, RPC control, or SDK integration.
- Whether folder instructions are enough or you need templates, skills, extensions, or packages.
- Whether the launching account’s permissions are appropriate, or the task needs a separate sandbox.
