It is a self-hosted RTMP ingest and HLS delivery server: you publish a stream to Owncast, which serves viewers on its own site. To stream on YouTube as well, configure your encoder or a separate relay to publish to both destinations. This guide covers the Owncast VPS setup, the two separate network capacity requirements, and the extra routing needed for YouTube.
What you need to build
The workflow has three parts: an encoder or relay sends RTMP to your VPS; Owncast converts or passes through the stream and serves it to Owncast viewers using HLS; and a separately configured output sends the stream to YouTube. Owncast’s documentation describes the first two parts, not automatic forwarding to YouTube. Its default RTMP path is /live, while its default web interface and RTMP ports are 8080 and 1935 respectively. See Owncast’s installation documentation and broadcasting guidance.

- A Linux VPS with a public hostname or IP, sufficient CPU and storage, and firewall control.
- Broadcasting software capable of RTMP output, such as OBS, or a relay that explicitly supports both Owncast and YouTube at once.
- A YouTube live stream configured in YouTube Studio, with its own ingest address and stream key.
- A plan for startup after reboot, credential security, monitoring, and reconnection.
An Indian VPS may shorten network distance for some broadcasters or viewers, but location alone does not guarantee stable streaming. Confirm the provider’s current India region, sustained outbound capacity, transfer terms, and policy for long-running video traffic before choosing a plan.
Install Owncast securely
Choose an installation method
Owncast documents a quick installer, manual release installation, containers, and pre-installed hosting-provider options. The quick installer can fetch Owncast and FFmpeg if needed; Owncast advises against running a remote installer as root and recommends inspecting remote scripts before executing them. Manual installation requires FFmpeg. Follow the official installation instructions for the method you choose, rather than combining commands from different methods.

Open only the services you need
The default web interface uses TCP port 8080 and RTMP ingest uses TCP port 1935. Configure both the VPS provider’s firewall and the host firewall deliberately. A reverse proxy or different network design can change which ports are publicly exposed; do not assume the defaults are reachable until you have checked your firewall and routing.
Change both default credentials immediately
Open Owncast’s admin interface at /admin. The published defaults are username admin, password abc123, and stream key abc123. The admin password and stream key are separate credentials, even though their default values match. Change both during initial setup, use distinct secrets, and keep the stream key private. Anyone with the key may be able to publish to your server.
Make Owncast start after a reboot
Use Owncast’s official system-service instructions, or the equivalent supported configuration for your installation method, so the service starts at boot. Before relying on an unattended setup, reboot the VPS and confirm that the web interface returns and the service is running. A successful manual launch is not proof of reboot recovery.

- Find your Owncast address and key. Use the actual VPS hostname or IP, the RTMP port configured for your deployment, and the new stream key.
- Enter the RTMP destination. In OBS, choose a custom streaming service. Set the server URL to
rtmp://yourserver:1935/live, replacingyourserverwith your hostname, and enter the stream key in the separate key field. If your software accepts only one field, append the key to the path as required by that software. Use your actual port if it differs from 1935. - Set a compatible video and audio format. Owncast recommends H.264 video and AAC audio for broad compatibility. Its suggested starting points include 1080p30 at 4500 kbps or 720p30 at 3000 kbps; these are examples, not guarantees that a particular VPS or connection can sustain them.
- Set the keyframe interval to two seconds. Owncast recommends a two-second interval. Start with one output quality and confirm the stream works before adding transcoded variants.
- Start a test broadcast. Check Owncast’s site from a separate device or network, verify audio and video, and inspect server load and network use before treating the configuration as ready for continuous operation.
Owncast says software capable of sending RTMP is generally compatible, but it has not tested every application. A wired Ethernet connection for the source is preferable to Wi-Fi when practical, because wireless instability can interrupt the upload.

Configure YouTube as a separate destination
In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and use the ingest URL and stream key YouTube provides. Enter those credentials in an additional output from your broadcaster or in a relay that confirms support for simultaneous Owncast and YouTube destinations. Do not send your Owncast key to YouTube or your YouTube key to Owncast. Keep each destination’s credentials private.
Owncast’s incoming stream is not, by itself, a YouTube relay. If you use one encoder for both outputs, check that it supports simultaneous publishing and can maintain both connections at your chosen settings. If you use a relay, verify current destination limits and reconnect behavior for the exact plan. Owncast’s integration page describes Restream sending RTMP to Owncast and says Owncast as a destination requires a paid Restream user; it does not establish that a particular current plan routes one source to both Owncast and YouTube. YouTube’s requirements are not identical to Owncast’s recommendations. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe frequency (not over four seconds), and varies bitrate recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current values for your destination; do not treat Owncast’s example bitrates as universal YouTube settings.

Plan bandwidth, CPU, and storage
Broadcaster upload to the VPS
Your source connection must sustain the encoder bitrate all the way to the VPS. Owncast recommends allowing at least 1.5 times the stream bitrate for fluctuation and overhead: for a 5,000 kbps stream, its example calls for at least 7.5 Mbps of upload capacity. This is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee; leave additional margin if the connection varies.

VPS outbound bandwidth to Owncast viewers
Outbound delivery is a separate requirement from the broadcaster’s upload. Owncast’s approximate peak calculation is bitrate in kbps × viewers ÷ 1,000 = Mbps. At 5,000 kbps and 25 simultaneous Owncast viewers, that is roughly 125 Mbps of sustained outbound throughput for one quality, before practical headroom and protocol overhead. Longer viewing sessions also consume more total transfer. Confirm how your VPS provider measures transfer and charges for overage before committing.
CPU and multiple output qualities
Whether Owncast passes a stream through or transcodes it affects CPU use. Owncast gives a rough estimate that one CPU core can often handle one transcoded output quality at 30 fps, with substantial variation by codec, bitrate, resolution, preset, and host. Treat that as a planning estimate, then benchmark your actual configuration. More viewers primarily increase delivery bandwidth; each added transcoded quality adds encoding work.
Start with one variant, check stream health and server load, and add variants only when the initial configuration works and the VPS has headroom. Multiple qualities can help viewers on slower connections, but they cost more CPU. Owncast also supports S3-compatible object storage for video delivery; this can shift delivery away from the VPS, but requires a separate provider and configuration.

Choose an Indian VPS by checking the actual terms
Owncast’s provider page lists Linode/Akamai, Reclaim Cloud, and Vultr as options with pre-installed Owncast offerings. That is an installation reference, not confirmation that a particular plan currently has an Indian data center or the network terms your stream needs. Check Owncast’s provider list, then verify the current details directly with the provider.

- Is the advertised location currently available for the plan you can buy?
- Does the plan provide a public IPv4 address and let you configure the required firewall rules?
- What sustained outbound throughput, monthly transfer allowance, accounting method, and overage charges apply?
- Are the virtual CPU characteristics sufficient if you need transcoding?
- How much storage and backup capacity do you need?
- Does the provider permit continuous live-video traffic?
- Where are your broadcaster and audience? If viewers are spread across countries, compare latency and delivery cost for that audience instead of assuming India is always the best location.
Provider regions, prices, and network policies change. No particular Indian provider or plan can be recommended from the details established here; check the provider’s current documentation and terms before purchase.
Test continuous operation and recoveries
Continuous streaming depends on more than Owncast staying online: the source encoder or relay must also remain connected, and YouTube must receive its separately configured output. Test the full chain before depending on it.
- Confirm Owncast starts automatically after a VPS reboot.
- Disconnect and reconnect the source, and confirm the broadcaster can publish again with the correct key.
- Check playback on the Owncast site and the YouTube destination independently.
- Monitor CPU, memory, disk, outbound throughput, and service logs during a representative stream.
- Document who can access the admin interface and where credentials are stored; rotate any key that may have been exposed.
Troubleshoot the common failures
