To try an older game on Windows 11, first check for an update from its publisher, then run the built-in Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. If needed, you can also try a Windows compatibility setting for the game’s executable. These steps can help with some older programs, but they cannot fix every game-specific problem.
Try the fixes in this order
- Check the game publisher’s support page. Look for a Windows 11 update, compatibility note, or supported re-release. Microsoft recommends checking the publisher for an updated version when an app did not come from Microsoft Store; older software can stop working as Windows changes its architecture, security features, and system requirements. - Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter, select Run, and follow the prompts to select the game and test suggested settings.
- If the troubleshooter does not help, try the game’s Compatibility tab. Right-click the game’s shortcut or executable, choose Properties > Compatibility, select Run this program in compatibility mode for, and choose a Windows version to test. Select Apply, then launch the game. This manual procedure is documented in an older Microsoft game-troubleshooting article, whose example uses Windows 98/Windows Me; treat it as a setting to test, not a guaranteed or universally recommended fix. What compatibility mode can—and cannot—do
Compatibility mode applies settings intended to help an older program behave as it did on an earlier version of Windows. It may help when a game launches or behaves incorrectly because of an operating-system compatibility issue. It does not automatically provide missing game components, replace an obsolete installer, satisfy a disc check or copy-protection system, or restore a discontinued online service. Whether any of those issues applies depends on the specific game.

If installation fails before the game can launch, or the game starts but shows a specific graphics, sound, or multiplayer error, note the exact message and check the publisher’s support information. A compatibility setting should not be assumed to resolve a problem caused by a game-specific dependency.

To see the DirectX version reported by your system, type dxdiag in Windows Search and open the tool; check its System tab. Microsoft says Windows 11 already includes the latest DirectX version available for that release and directs users to Windows Update for the latest version applicable to their Windows release. Use Settings > Windows Update to check for updates. If problems persist, Windows Update is also Microsoft’s recommended route for driver updates. Read Microsoft’s instructions for checking DirectX.

Windows 11’s baseline graphics requirement specifies DirectX 12 or later and a WDDM 2.0 driver. Meeting that operating-system requirement does not establish that a particular older game’s graphics needs are met. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications.
Check whether Windows is in S mode
S mode allows only apps from Microsoft Store, so it can block installation of a game obtained elsewhere. Microsoft also notes that some games do not work in S mode, including some that rely on anti-cheat drivers or OpenGL above 1.1. Check whether the PC is in S mode before troubleshooting an installation blocked by that restriction. If you consider switching out of S mode, be aware that Microsoft says the change is permanent and cannot be reversed. See Microsoft’s S mode information.

When the game still will not run
Compatibility mode is not a universal repair. If the steps above do not resolve the issue, take the game’s exact name, installation source, Windows version, and error message to the publisher’s support page. A remedy for one title—such as a supported re-release or a fix for a particular dependency—should not be presumed to work for another.
