You can run a 24/7 YouTube radio station from OBS on Linux, but dependable broadcasting takes more than leaving OBS open. Configure YouTube’s ingest settings and OBS encoder together, test the full setup under load, keep the Linux host awake, and plan for network, power, and software failures. One important limit: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, so a continuous day-long broadcast is not a dependable source for a complete VOD.
What you need before going live
- A Linux computer with a supported graphics/display environment. OBS lists OpenGL 3.3 and X11 or Wayland among its Linux requirements, but meeting the minimum does not mean the machine can sustain your chosen encode settings. Load depends on resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity. See OBS system requirements.
- A reliable upload connection and power supply, plus a plan to monitor and recover the station if the host or network fails.
- A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible to live stream, and a stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube explains eligibility in its live-streaming getting started guide.
- Audio and any accompanying visuals that you have the rights to use for live transmission and, if relevant, archiving.
Install OBS from a supported source for your distribution. The OBS project overview covers the application’s basic workflow; distribution-specific installation guidance is available in the OBS installation instructions mirror. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, not as proof that the machine can run continuously at your intended quality.

Build and test the radio station in OBS
1. Create the scene and route its audio
In OBS, create a scene for the station’s visuals and add the sources your broadcast needs. For an audio-led station, verify that the music or program audio reaches the OBS audio mixer and that the correct output is selected. Watch the mixer while playing a test track: the meter should respond without clipping. Check that any visuals remain stable and that audio does not disappear when the scene changes.

- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and obtain its stream key and, if needed, server URL. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube if it is available in the service list, or enter the server URL and stream key as instructed by YouTube.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not expose it in screenshots, logs, or public documentation. If it is accidentally disclosed, replace it in YouTube Live Control Room and update OBS.
- Start streaming from OBS and check for the incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room. For a scheduled broadcast, verify the preview before clicking YouTube’s Go live control.
3. Set the encoder for the target quality
YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest. For its standard SDR encoder workflow, it recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), progressive scan, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 audio and 128 Kbps stereo audio. Available options can vary with the Linux encoder and OBS build, so check what your installation actually exposes. Choose a bitrate using YouTube’s table for the exact resolution and frame rate you plan to send; do not carry one bitrate across different modes. For example, YouTube lists 2 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate and 6 Mbps as the maximum for 720p at 30 fps. That is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee your connection or encoder will perform reliably at that setting. Leave upload headroom rather than running the connection at its practical limit.
4. Run a sustained private or unlisted test
Before making the station public, test with the same audio, scenes, motion, resolution, and frame rate planned for the real broadcast. Confirm that sound is present and clean, the image is stable, Live Control Room reports acceptable stream health, and any local recording file continues to grow. OBS recommends testing before the first public stream; YouTube’s live-streaming tips also advise monitoring quality and checking the local archive.

Keep the Linux broadcast running unattended
OBS’s automatic reconnect can help with a brief connection drop, but it does not cover every failure. A frozen host, power loss, long outage, or crashed OBS process may still take the station offline. Build an operating plan around those risks rather than treating reconnect as a 24/7 guarantee.
- Keep the Linux session used for broadcasting alive and prevent routine sleep or suspend.
- Configure OBS to launch with the station session, then test that it reconnects after a network interruption.
- Arrange monitoring that does not depend on the streaming computer itself, with an alert path an operator will see.
- Test recovery after both network loss and a host restart. Confirm that OBS returns to the correct scene and stream settings.
- Consider power continuity measures where appropriate. The required equipment depends on the site and is not established by a universal OBS setting.
These are practical operating steps, not a certified Linux service configuration or an uptime promise. No OBS reconnect option can ensure recovery from every host, network, or power failure.

Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR limits
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. A single 24/7 broadcast should therefore not be treated as a reliable way to create a complete YouTube VOD. YouTube’s guidance is on its live-stream archiving and DVR for live streams help pages.
If you need a complete recording, enable local recording in OBS and check that the file is actually growing during the broadcast. Make sure the recording destination has sufficient free space and that your workflow can preserve and verify the file. Another option is to schedule shorter broadcast blocks that end before the 12-hour threshold, but YouTube does not guarantee how a particular channel’s segmented broadcasts will appear in its archives.

Clear music rights before streaming
You are responsible for having the rights needed for both live and archived use. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches; when it identifies such content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the operator, and continued use may lead to interruption or termination. Even licensed third-party material can be interrupted if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and copyright guidance for live streams.

- Confirm that your permission covers the territories where the stream is available, live transmission, and any planned archive or VOD use.
- If a rights holder uses Content ID, ask whether your channel needs to be allowlisted before the broadcast.
- Do not assume that a general music subscription grants the rights to rebroadcast its catalog on YouTube.
Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream failures
