Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For one simple, pre-recorded YouTube stream on a minimal Linux VPS, 2 GB of RAM is a cautious starting estimate—not an official minimum or a guarantee. iTechGuides (2026) says a 1 GB VPS may be adequate when compatible video and audio are sent without re-encoding, but that leaves less room for Linux and supporting processes. The right size depends mainly on what FFmpeg does with the media, how many streams run at once, and what else shares the server.
Why 2 GB is a starting point, not a YouTube requirement
YouTube does not publish a VPS RAM minimum for live streaming, and FFmpeg’s documentation does not establish a universal amount for this workload. The 2 GB estimate comes from iTechGuides (2026), which presents it as a practical rule of thumb for one FFmpeg process on a minimal Linux VPS—not as a controlled benchmark or tested guarantee. The same guide says 1 GB may be adequate for a lean stream-copy job.

Do not choose RAM from resolution alone. A prerecorded stream can use relatively little processing if FFmpeg passes compatible encoded video and audio through unchanged. Decoding and re-encoding, applying filters, running multiple outputs, or sharing the VPS with other services changes the workload. The available guidance does not support a fixed RAM-per-resolution formula or a precise memory requirement for particular settings.
Choose a VPS by the whole streaming workload
Stream copy or re-encoding
With stream copy, FFmpeg sends the existing encoded tracks without decoding and encoding them again. This is an option only when the file’s codecs and settings are compatible with the intended stream. Transcoding or applying filters adds work, but there is no supported fixed RAM increment to apply to your estimate. Check both CPU and memory under the actual workload.

Number of streams and other services
One FFmpeg process on a minimal Linux installation is a different case from several simultaneous streams or a VPS also running a website, database, or other services. Allow room for the operating system and background processes; do not assume all advertised RAM will be available to FFmpeg.
Network, storage, and provider terms
RAM is only one constraint. The VPS needs enough sustained outbound bandwidth for the stream, a reliable connection, and disk space for the media file. Check the provider’s current plan specifications and continuous-use terms before relying on it for an always-on broadcast. The available sources do not establish a current authoritative comparison of Indian VPS plans or their streaming terms.

Check the video against YouTube’s ingest guidance
Use YouTube’s published encoder guidance to check stream compatibility and output settings; it describes ingest requirements, not VPS memory needs or a guarantee that a provider’s network can sustain the stream. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrates vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

These are recommended ingest bitrates, not RAM figures. YouTube also recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom above the total streaming bitrate. Measure before leaving the stream running
- Start with a suitable test allocation. For one uncomplicated stream on minimal Linux, use 2 GB as a cautious initial estimate. Treat 1 GB as a test candidate only if you are stream-copying compatible tracks and the VPS has little else running.
- Test the real job. Use the actual media file, FFmpeg command, intended output settings, and number of simultaneous streams. A short test with a different file or a stream-copy command does not establish how a transcoding workload will behave.
- Inspect memory and CPU while it runs. Watch for memory pressure and sustained CPU load, and check the stream’s health in YouTube. If either resource is under pressure, or the stream is unstable, adjust the workload or move to a larger VPS and repeat the test.
- Check the uplink separately. Compare total outgoing bitrate with the VPS’s available sustained upload capacity, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Test motion and audio as well as a static image, then monitor stream health during operation.
YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days to enable live streaming. Confirm eligibility and test the setup before depending on it; see YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder and streaming guidance.
