NGINX owns ports 80 and 443, accepts browser connections, handles optional TLS termination, and forwards each request with proxy_pass. Apache then serves the request through its normal name-based virtual hosts on the private backend port.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Two daemons cannot listen on the same IP address and port at the same time. Separating the listeners—and restricting Apache to loopback or another protected internal address—eliminates the bind conflict while preserving Apache applications, modules and virtual-host configuration.

The working architecture
The normal arrangement is an edge-and-backend pair:
Client
|
| HTTP :80 / HTTPS :443
v
NGINX (public listener, optional TLS termination)
|
| proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080
v
Apache (loopback :8080, backend VirtualHost rules)
NGINX receives the request, selects a server block by hostname, and sends the request to Apache. Apache remains responsible for its document roots, application handlers and backend virtual hosts. The browser sees NGINX as the web server; it does not connect directly to Apache.

Use a separate internal address instead of loopback only when another host must reach Apache. In that case, bind Apache to a dedicated private interface and enforce the restriction with the host firewall or network policy. Do not expose the backend port to the public internet merely because it is convenient.
Before changing either service
Choose the listeners
- Reserve NGINX for public TCP port 80 and, if HTTPS is enabled, public TCP port 443.
- Choose an unused Apache port, commonly
127.0.0.1:8080. Any free local port works, but use one value consistently in Apache, NGINX, monitoring and firewall rules. - Decide whether NGINX will terminate TLS. Termination at NGINX is usually simplest because certificates, HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects and TLS policy are managed in one place.
Record the hostnames
List every hostname that should reach the application, including the canonical name and any aliases. Those names must agree across DNS, NGINX server_name, and Apache ServerName/ServerAlias. A mismatch can select the wrong default virtual host even when both services are running.

Back up the current NGINX and Apache configuration, certificate references and service-unit overrides. Keep an existing working configuration available until the new listeners have been tested locally and from another machine.
Install both web servers
Install NGINX and Apache from the supported packages for your operating-system release. Package names and configuration paths vary by distribution, so use that distribution’s package manager and service manager rather than copying paths from an unrelated system.
Do not start both daemons blindly if Apache is already using port 80. First identify listeners with:
ss -ltnp
Stop or reconfigure the service currently occupying the public port, then start the intended edge service. The goal is one owner per address-and-port combination.

Move Apache to a private backend port
Change Apache’s listening address
Set Apache’s global Listen directive to the selected backend address and port:
Listen 127.0.0.1:8080
Some distributions keep this in a ports file, while others place it in the main configuration or an included fragment. Remove or replace old public Listen 80 directives unless Apache must intentionally serve another address. If Apache has an HTTPS listener that is no longer needed, remove that listener as well; NGINX will own public 443 in the termination design.
Bind each virtual host to the backend port
Change the virtual-host binding from the former public port to the backend port and retain the real hostnames:
<VirtualHost 127.0.0.1:8080>
ServerName example.com
ServerAlias www.example.com
DocumentRoot /var/www/example
<Directory /var/www/example>
Require all granted
</Directory>
ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/example-error.log
CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/example-access.log combined
</VirtualHost>
Repeat the binding change for every Apache site. The ServerName and ServerAlias values remain the public hostnames; only the address and port change. Apache can still choose among multiple name-based virtual hosts after the request arrives on port 8080.
Test Apache before involving NGINX
Run the configuration test supplied by your package, commonly one of these commands:
apachectl configtest
httpd -t
Use the command that exists on your system and correct every syntax error before reloading. Then start or reload Apache and make a local request that includes the intended host header:

A successful response proves that Apache is listening on the selected address, that the virtual host matches, and that the application can be reached without NGINX. A wrong site at this stage is an Apache virtual-host ordering or hostname problem, not an NGINX proxy problem.
Configure NGINX as the public edge
HTTP reverse proxy
Create one NGINX server block for each hostname or group of aliases. The essential bridge is proxy_pass:
Recommended Free Tools
server {
listen 80;
server_name example.com www.example.com;
location / {
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080;
}
}
NGINX sends the request to the specified proxy server, receives the response and sends that response back to the client. The upstream address may include a port, as it does here. Keep the trailing-path behavior of proxy_pass in mind: placing a URI after the upstream address can replace part of the matched location, while an address without a URI forwards the original request path.
Forward the information applications need
NGINX changes some proxied headers by default, including Host and Connection. Set an explicit header policy that matches your application and Apache logs. The example preserves the requested host, the original client address, the proxy chain and the original scheme.
Configure Apache or the application to trust these forwarded values only when the connection comes from NGINX’s trusted address. Never let an untrusted public client supply a value that the application treats as an authenticated client IP or secure-connection indicator.
HTTPS with TLS termination at NGINX
For the common termination model, NGINX owns port 443, presents the certificate, decrypts the request and proxies plain HTTP over loopback:

proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080;
}
}
Use a separate port-80 block to redirect HTTP to the canonical HTTPS URL if that is your policy. Ensure the certificate covers every hostname listed in server_name. Apache must understand that the original request was HTTPS through X-Forwarded-Proto; otherwise an application-generated redirect can point to HTTP or create a redirect loop.
Re-encrypt the NGINX-to-Apache hop when required
Loopback traffic is not encrypted in the termination design. If policy requires encryption between the two daemons, configure Apache with an internal HTTPS listener and proxy to an https:// upstream, with appropriate certificate validation and trust settings. This introduces a second certificate and more failure points, so document ownership, renewal and verification for both hops.
True TLS passthrough is a different design: NGINX forwards encrypted TCP without seeing HTTP, so it cannot perform normal HTTP header manipulation, URL routing or certificate termination. Use it only when the backend must own the TLS session and the resulting routing and observability limits are acceptable.
Choose a routing model
Host-based routing
Use separate NGINX server blocks when different hostnames map to different Apache sites. Each block can proxy to the same backend port because Apache uses the preserved Host header to select its corresponding virtual host. This is the least surprising arrangement for several independent domains.

Path-based routing
You can send different URL paths to different upstream ports or services:
location /legacy/ {
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080;
}
location /api/ {
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:9090;
}
Path routing requires a deliberate decision about whether the upstream receives the original prefix. Test links, redirects, cookies and absolute URLs; applications that expect to run at the site root may need a configured base path or a rewritten URI.
Best Value
Start, validate and reload safely
- Test Apache with
apachectl configtestorhttpd -t. - Test NGINX syntax with
nginx -t. Do not reload after a failed test. - Start or enable both services using the service manager supported by your distribution.
- Reload Apache after a valid Apache configuration and reload NGINX after a valid NGINX configuration. A reload normally lets existing connections finish; use a full restart only when the platform or change requires it.
- Run
ss -ltnpagain. NGINX should own public 80 and 443; Apache should own only127.0.0.1:8080or the explicitly protected internal address. - Test locally through Apache and externally through NGINX, using each hostname and both HTTP and HTTPS where applicable.
For an HTTPS test that must select a particular name before DNS changes are complete, use a client option that targets the server address while retaining the hostname in the request. Check the certificate name, response status, redirect destination and application content—not merely whether a TCP connection succeeds.
Security and operational controls
Keep Apache private
Binding Apache to loopback prevents ordinary remote connections. If it must bind to a private interface, allow the backend port only from the NGINX address or private network. Block it at both the host firewall and any upstream firewall where practical.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallDo not create an open forward proxy
Apache’s mod_proxy supports reverse-proxy directives such as ProxyPass and ProxyPassReverse, but ProxyRequests enables forward-proxy behavior. It is unrelated to the NGINX-to-Apache arrangement and must not be enabled casually: an open proxy can be abused to relay traffic for other parties. In this architecture, NGINX performs the public reverse-proxy role, while Apache serves the backend application.
Preserve logs at both layers
Keep NGINX access and error logs as the edge record and Apache access and error logs as the application record. Include request IDs or another correlation value if your platform supports them. A request that appears in NGINX but not Apache failed between the proxy and backend; a request present in both points to Apache, the application or the response path.
Plan certificate and configuration reloads
Certificate renewal must update the files referenced by NGINX and trigger a validated reload. Keep private keys readable only by the account or mechanism that needs them. Treat NGINX and Apache configuration as deployable assets: review changes, test syntax, then reload.
Diagnose common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Checks and fix |
|---|---|---|
| Service fails to start with an address-in-use error | Both daemons still claim the same address and port, or another service owns it. | Run ss -ltnp; remove Apache’s public Listen directive, move its virtual hosts to the backend port, and ensure only NGINX claims 80/443. |
| NGINX returns 502 or 503 | Apache is stopped, listening on another address or port, blocked by local policy, or refusing the request. | Check Apache’s service status and error log, confirm its listener with ss -ltnp, then curl the backend directly at 127.0.0.1:8080. |
| The wrong website appears | NGINX server_name, Apache ServerName/ServerAlias, the Host header or default virtual-host order is inconsistent. |
Test each layer with the exact hostname, preserve Host $host, and inspect which virtual host Apache selected. |
| HTTP/HTTPS redirect loop | The application does not trust the original HTTPS scheme after TLS terminates at NGINX. | Forward X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme and configure the application or Apache to trust it only from NGINX. |
| Logs show NGINX’s address instead of the visitor | The application is reading the socket peer rather than the forwarded client-IP headers. | Pass X-Real-IP and X-Forwarded-For, then configure trusted-proxy handling; do not trust those headers from arbitrary clients. |
| Backend works directly but not through NGINX | Proxy path, headers, hostname routing or NGINX permissions are wrong. | Compare a direct backend request with an external request, inspect NGINX’s error log, and verify the location’s proxy_pass URI behavior. |
| Certificate warning or wrong certificate | The 443 server block, certificate names or default-server selection is wrong. | Check the requested hostname against the certificate’s names and ensure the intended TLS block is loaded after nginx -t. |
Design choices at a glance
| Decision | Recommended arrangement | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Which daemon owns public ports? | NGINX on 80 and 443 | Centralizes edge routing and TLS, while Apache remains an internal application server. |
| Where does Apache listen? | 127.0.0.1:8080 or a separately firewalled private address |
Loopback is safest and simplest; a private interface supports multi-host access but needs firewall controls. |
| Where does TLS terminate? | At NGINX for most deployments | One certificate and policy point; the local hop is plain HTTP unless re-encrypted. |
| How are sites selected? | Hostname in NGINX, then preserved Host in Apache |
Works naturally with name-based virtual hosts; inconsistent aliases produce the wrong site. |
| How are client addresses preserved? | Forwarded headers with an explicit trusted-proxy policy | Applications see the real client, but trusting headers from the wrong source creates a spoofing risk. |
| Where are failures observed? | NGINX edge logs plus Apache/application logs | Two log streams require correlation but identify which hop failed. |
When Apache should remain the public edge
Putting NGINX in front is not mandatory. Apache can remain on ports 80 and 443 when its modules, authentication rules or existing operational tooling are the reason for the deployment. In that case, NGINX must use another address or port and cannot also claim the same public listener. The two-daemon design described here is specifically for installations where NGINX is the public edge and Apache is retained for backend compatibility.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Rollback plan
- Keep the last known-good configuration and certificate paths unchanged until external tests pass.
- If NGINX cannot load, restore its prior configuration and restart or reload it using the supported service command.
- If Apache cannot load after the port change, restore its previous listener only after stopping NGINX or assigning NGINX a different temporary address; never allow both services to compete for the same port.
- After rollback, verify listeners with
ss -ltnpand test the public hostname from outside the server.
The finished arrangement is straightforward to verify: NGINX is the only public listener, Apache answers on its protected backend address, the original hostname reaches the correct Apache virtual host, and TLS and forwarded-header behavior match the application’s expectations.
