The dependable way to run Nextcloud on your own VPS is a Docker Compose project with a persistent Nextcloud volume, a persistent database volume, a supported database such as MariaDB or PostgreSQL, a reverse proxy providing HTTPS, and system cron for background jobs. A single disposable container is suitable only for limited testing; it is not a production deployment.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
This guide covers the VPS prerequisites, a practical Compose layout, first startup, HTTPS and proxy trust, cron, backups, upgrades, and the decisions between a hand-built stack and Nextcloud AIO.

What you need before installing Nextcloud
A supported VPS and operating system
Use a current 64-bit Linux distribution on a VPS that you can administer as root or through sudo. Create a DNS record for the hostname you will use, such as cloud.example.net, and point it to the VPS address before requesting a certificate.
Nextcloud documents a minimum of 128 MB of RAM per process and recommends at least 512 MB per process. Those figures are per process, not a complete sizing promise for the whole server. The web process, database, reverse proxy, operating system, file previews, office integrations, and concurrent users all consume additional memory. A small personal installation can run on less hardware than a multi-user service, but leave headroom rather than treating the minimum as a target.

Network access and host preparation
Update the operating system, install Docker Engine and the Docker Compose plugin, and reserve only the ports you actually need. The usual public ports are SSH for administration and HTTP/HTTPS for the reverse proxy. The Nextcloud and database containers should communicate over a private Docker network instead of being exposed directly to the internet.
- Use a current 64-bit Linux release supported by your VPS provider.
- Point the chosen DNS record at the VPS and allow DNS propagation.
- Install Docker Engine and the Compose plugin from the distribution or Docker’s supported packages.
- Configure the firewall for SSH and the reverse proxy’s HTTP and HTTPS ports.
- Keep the database port private; do not publish it as a public VPS port.
Choose the deployment style
Hand-built Docker Compose
Compose gives you control over the application image, database, volumes, network, proxy, and upgrade sequence. It is the right choice when you already operate Docker or need to fit Nextcloud into an existing Nginx, Caddy, or Traefik setup. The official Docker project describes Compose as the easiest route to a complete setup, while warning that its basic single-container example is intended only for limited testing.

Nextcloud AIO is the official automated option. It bundles more of the operational work and includes Office, a turnkey backup solution, and Imaginary. Choose it when an integrated, guided deployment is more valuable than selecting every component yourself. Choose hand-built Compose when you need component-level control, an existing reverse proxy, or infrastructure conventions that AIO does not match.
Apache image or FPM image
| Choice | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Apache image | A standalone Compose stack where the container serves HTTP internally | Simpler deployment with fewer moving parts |
| FPM image | An existing Nginx, Caddy, or other web server that serves static files and forwards FastCGI | More control, but you must configure the web server and FastCGI path correctly |
Choose a database
Current Nextcloud requirements list MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQLite. SQLite is recommended only for testing and very small, minimal instances. For a normal VPS deployment, use MariaDB, MySQL, or PostgreSQL and base the choice on the database you already know, your backup tooling, and the support offered by your provider. Neither MariaDB nor PostgreSQL is universally superior for this use case; consistent administration and tested recovery matter more.

Create a persistent Compose project
Create a directory such as /opt/nextcloud, with a secrets subdirectory readable only by the account that manages the stack. Store database passwords in those files rather than committing them to version control. The official Nextcloud image supports _FILE secret variables.
The following example uses the Apache image and MariaDB. It keeps the web application, user data, and database on named persistent volumes, while leaving the public TLS endpoint to a reverse proxy. The exact image tags should be selected from the currently supported releases when you deploy; do not silently pin an obsolete version.

Set restrictive permissions on both secret files and keep a record of where they are stored. If you use PostgreSQL, replace the database image, environment variables, data directory, and Nextcloud database variables with the PostgreSQL equivalents documented for the image version you selected. If an existing proxy is on the same Docker host, attach it to the Compose network; otherwise, publish only the internal app endpoint to a private interface.
Start the containers and initialize Nextcloud
- Check the configuration. From the project directory, run
docker compose config. Fix syntax, missing secret files, or invalid volume paths before starting. - Start the stack. Run
docker compose up -d. Compose creates the network and persistent volumes, then starts the database and app containers. - Read the logs. Use
docker compose logs -f appanddocker compose logs -f db. Wait for the database to finish initialization before diagnosing an application connection error. - Open the site through the proxy. Complete the Nextcloud setup wizard and select the database host and credentials that match the Compose service. If you provide all supported administrator and database environment variables, the image can initialize automatically; the interactive wizard is easier to verify on a first installation.
- Confirm persistence. Create a test folder, stop the stack with
docker compose down(without-v), start it again, and verify that the folder remains. Never usedocker compose down -von a live instance unless you deliberately intend to delete the named volumes.
The container filesystem is not a backup. Recreating a container is expected; losing its persistent volumes is not. Keep the Compose file, secret-management procedure, and volume locations documented outside the containers.

Put a reverse proxy and HTTPS in front
A public Nextcloud service should terminate TLS at a capable reverse proxy such as Nginx, Caddy, Traefik, or another equivalent web server. The Nextcloud Docker project states that HTTPS encryption is mandatory when the server is reachable from the internet. The proxy obtains and renews the certificate, accepts connections on ports 80 and 443, and forwards requests to the app container over the private Docker network.
Proxy responsibilities
- Redirect plain HTTP to HTTPS after certificate issuance, while allowing the ACME challenge path required by your certificate method.
- Forward the original host and protocol, the client address, and WebSocket or connection-upgrade headers when your proxy requires them.
- Send requests to the Apache container’s internal port, or to the FPM service and a separately configured static-file root when using FPM.
- Apply upload and request-timeout limits appropriate for large files; overly small defaults cause apparently random upload failures.
- Do not publish the database service or an unprotected app port directly to the internet.
Tell Nextcloud which proxy is trusted
When TLS terminates upstream, Nextcloud must know that the proxy is trusted. Add the proxy’s Docker-network IP address or CIDR range to trusted_proxies. The value must describe the proxy, not every possible internet client. Incorrect proxy trust can make client-IP logging and access-control decisions unreliable.
Recommended Free Tools
Set overwriteprotocol to https when the proxy receives HTTPS and forwards plain HTTP internally. Depending on the topology, you may also need overwritehost and overwrite.cli.url so generated links and command-line jobs use the public HTTPS address. Do not set overwrite values blindly: they should reflect the address users actually enter.
You can inspect a proxy container’s address and apply settings with occ. Adapt the service name to your project:

PROXY_IP=$(docker inspect -f '{{range.NetworkSettings.Networks}}{{.IPAddress}}{{end}}' proxy)
docker compose exec --user www-data app php occ config:system:set trusted_proxies 0 --value="$PROXY_IP"
docker compose exec --user www-data app php occ config:system:set overwriteprotocol --value=https
If the proxy’s address changes because containers are recreated, use a stable Docker network or a CIDR appropriate to that network and verify the setting after maintenance.
Enable production background jobs with cron
Nextcloud recommends system cron mode for production instances. Web-triggered background jobs depend on users visiting the site and are not a reliable scheduler. Cron runs cron.php, which performs cleanup and other tasks registered by installed apps.
- Switch the background-job setting to Cron in the Nextcloud administration interface.
- Confirm the mode from the container with
docker compose exec --user www-data app php occ background:cron. Use the actual Compose service name if it is notapp. - Schedule the command from the VPS host or a dedicated scheduler at regular intervals. A host-cron entry can invoke
docker compose exec -T --user www-data app php -f /var/www/html/cron.phpfrom the project directory. - Review the Administration overview for missed or failing jobs after the first few runs.
Run the job as the web-server user used by the image, normally www-data, so files created by background tasks have usable ownership. If cron reports that the container or working directory cannot be found, use absolute paths to the Compose file and project directory.
Back up every part of the installation
A restorable Nextcloud backup contains more than the database. Preserve the configuration, custom apps when you use them, user data, theme, and database. Keep backup copies outside the live Docker volumes and test restoration periodically on a separate environment.
Best Value
Prepare a consistent backup
- Announce a short maintenance window and enable maintenance mode with
docker compose exec --user www-data app php occ maintenance:mode --on. - Back up the database using the native dump utility inside the database container or from a trusted database client. A raw copy of a live database directory is not a substitute for a consistent database dump.
- Copy the Nextcloud configuration, custom apps, data, and theme from their persistent volumes or mounted host directories. Preserve ownership, permissions, and symbolic links.
- Save the Compose file, image tags, proxy configuration, and the procedure for restoring secret files. Secrets are required to reconnect the restored app to its database.
- Verify that the archive can be read and that the database dump contains expected tables. Store at least one copy on a different host or storage system.
- Disable maintenance mode with
docker compose exec --user www-data app php occ maintenance:mode --offand confirm that users can sign in and open files.
Before an upgrade, take this same backup. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
Upgrade without losing the service
Read the release and image upgrade instructions for the version you are moving to. Review app compatibility, available disk space, and database health first. Put Nextcloud in maintenance mode, create and verify the backup, then update the image reference and run docker compose pull followed by docker compose up -d. Watch application logs and the Administration overview for migration errors.
Do not delete volumes while replacing containers. Keep the previous image reference available until the upgrade has been validated, and do not attempt a downgrade by simply changing the tag after database migrations have run; restore the tested backup instead.
Quick Recap
Diagnose common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Checks and corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Setup says it cannot connect to the database | Database initialization is incomplete, the host name is wrong, or credentials do not match | Read database logs, use the Compose service name as the database host, verify secret-file contents and permissions, and retry only after the database reports readiness. |
| Browser shows a redirect loop or HTTP links | The proxy terminates TLS but Nextcloud does not know the original protocol | Check forwarded headers, add the proxy to trusted_proxies, and set overwriteprotocol to https when that matches the topology. |
| Users see the wrong client IP | An untrusted or incorrectly specified proxy address | Review the proxy IP or CIDR and remove broad trust ranges that include untrusted clients. |
| Uploads fail at a fixed size or timeout | Proxy or web-server body-size and timeout limits | Raise limits consistently in the proxy and app path, then retry with a file larger than the previous threshold. |
| Background jobs are overdue | Cron was never scheduled, runs under the wrong user, or cannot reach the container | Run the documented occ background:cron command manually, inspect host-cron output, and use absolute Compose paths. |
| Files disappear after recreating containers | Data was stored only in the ephemeral container filesystem or volumes were removed | Attach named volumes or host mounts for app, data, and database state; never remove production volumes during routine redeployments. |
| Updates fill the disk | Old images, logs, previews, or backups consume local storage | Measure Docker and host usage, rotate logs, remove unused images only after confirming the active version, and move backups off the VPS. |
Which architecture should you choose?
| Decision | Choose this when | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Compose with Apache | You want the shortest path to a self-contained app service | Keep the container private behind the HTTPS proxy. |
| Compose with FPM | You already operate Nginx, Caddy, or another server for static files and FastCGI | FastCGI, static paths, headers, and upload limits all need deliberate configuration. |
| MariaDB or MySQL | Your team already maintains it or your provider supplies familiar tooling | Use native dumps and verify the selected image’s supported variables. |
| PostgreSQL | Your existing operations and backup practice are PostgreSQL-based | Use the PostgreSQL-specific image and connection settings consistently. |
| SQLite | Testing or a genuinely minimal instance | It is not the recommended choice for a normal production service. |
| Hand-built Compose | You need transparent component-level control | You own proxy setup, cron, upgrades, and backup automation. |
| Nextcloud AIO | You want an official automated deployment with bundled Office and backup capabilities | It provides more automation, while reducing some component-level choice. |
Operational checklist
- DNS points to the VPS and the firewall exposes only required public ports.
- The app and database use persistent storage, with no production data left only in a container layer.
- Database credentials are supplied through protected secret files where practical.
- The reverse proxy provides valid HTTPS and forwards the original host, protocol, and client address.
trusted_proxiescontains only the proxy network, and overwrite settings match the actual TLS topology.- System cron runs as the web user and the Administration overview shows healthy background jobs.
- Backups include configuration, custom apps, data, theme, and database, and at least one restore has been tested away from the live VPS.
- Upgrades are performed after a verified backup and without deleting persistent volumes.
