Use refresh first if the server does not see a newly added folder. The vehicle’s spawn name, dependencies, data-file declarations, audio, handling, and game-build requirements are package-specific, so the included README and creator instructions take priority over any universal template.

How FiveM custom vehicles are organized
FiveM treats downloadable content as a resource: a folder containing files that the server can start, stop, and restart. A resource normally lives somewhere under the server-data resources/ directory and must contain a manifest named fxmanifest.lua for FiveM to parse it. The vehicle model and textures are streamed assets. Other files, such as vehicle metadata, handling, or car-colours data, may need explicit data_file entries in the manifest so the game mounts them. The resource manifest reference and data-file reference list the supported declarations, including VEHICLE_METADATA_FILE. There is no single manifest that is correct for every vehicle download.

Check the package before copying anything
Unzip the download and read its README, installation notes, and license before moving files. A correctly named folder can still fail if the package expects a dependency, a particular game build, or a different directory layout.
Record the package’s requirements
- Resource folder: Determine which directory contains the manifest. That directory, not merely the outer ZIP folder, is the resource you will install.
- Spawn/model name: Find the exact model name to use in your vehicle-spawning resource or administrative menu. It is often different from the download’s filename.
- Included files: Note whether the package contains model and texture files, vehicle metadata, handling, vehicle layouts, carvariations, audio, or scripts.
- Dependencies: Record any required framework, shared vehicle pack, audio resource, or other resource that must be installed and started first.
- Compatibility: Check any stated game-build, server-artifact, DLC, or configuration requirement.
- Terms and support: Keep the license and the creator’s support instructions. Do not redistribute a paid resource unless its terms permit it.
For resources obtained from a marketplace or community release, Cfx.re recommends checking dependencies, terms, and seller identity. Its guidance on finding resources is at Finding Resources.
Choose a vehicle resource carefully
Free and paid releases can both work, but the price does not establish compatibility or quality. Compare the practical details before installing:

Install the vehicle resource step by step
1. Extract the archive without changing its internal names
Extract the download on your computer. Do not rename model files, metadata files, or folders unless the creator explicitly tells you to. Names inside the manifest must match the files exactly, including capitalization on systems where case matters.
Look for a structure similar to this, while remembering that individual packages differ:

2. Put the real resource folder under resources/
Copy the directory that contains fxmanifest.lua into your server-data resources/ directory. A typical path is:

server-data/resources/vehicle-resource-name/Cfx.re also supports category folders, commonly written with brackets, to keep resources grouped:
server-data/resources/[vehicles]/vehicle-resource-name/The bracketed directory is only a container. The manifest must remain inside vehicle-resource-name, the actual resource folder. Do not place fxmanifest.lua only in [vehicles] and expect the child package to load.
3. Check or restore fxmanifest.lua
Open the supplied manifest in a text editor. A minimal resource commonly declares an FX version and the target game:
fx_version 'cerulean'
game 'gta5'Use the author’s manifest when one is included. It may contain files, data_file, script, dependency, or other entries that are essential to the vehicle. Do not replace it with the two-line example unless the package documentation explicitly says the resource needs nothing else.
If the archive has no manifest, check the creator’s instructions before writing one. A missing or misplaced manifest causes FiveM to warn that the folder is not a resource. The older __resource.lua filename is deprecated; use fxmanifest.lua when creating or updating a resource. The current declaration syntax is documented in the Cfx.re manifest reference.
4. Preserve the streamed asset layout
Many vehicle packages place streamable game assets in a stream/ subfolder. The general Cfx.re asset tutorial demonstrates the resource-and-stream pattern in Part 4 – Placing Assets & Creating Simple Map Mods. That tutorial concerns map assets, so it does not prove that every vehicle uses an identical layout. Follow the vehicle author’s instructions for model, texture, audio, and metadata placement.
Do not move files out of stream/ merely because their extensions look unfamiliar. Conversely, do not put metadata into stream/ if the package expects it beside the manifest. The manifest and README together define the intended arrangement.

5. Keep required metadata declarations
Streaming a model is separate from registering data files. Vehicle packages may require manifest lines such as:
data_file 'VEHICLE_METADATA_FILE' 'vehicles.meta'This line is only an example of the declaration type. The correct type, path, and number of declarations depend on the files supplied. A package that includes handling, car-colour, variation, or layout data may need additional declarations. Consult the data-file list and, more importantly, retain the declarations supplied by the creator.
6. Install dependencies in the same server-data tree
If the README names another resource, install that prerequisite separately and preserve its required resource name. A dependency can provide shared scripts, audio, vehicle layouts, or framework integration. Starting the vehicle before its prerequisite may produce manifest errors or a vehicle that loads without expected features.
Use the dependency declarations in the manifest as a starting point, but also read the creator’s documentation. A manifest can identify a resource dependency; it cannot tell you whether the dependency’s own version is compatible with your server.
7. Add the resource to server.cfg
Add an ensure line using the exact resource folder name, without the category-folder path:

Put the line with your other resource-start entries in server.cfg. Cfx.re documents ensure as starting a resource if it is stopped and starting it when it is not already running. See Server Commands.
If you are testing interactively, the same resource commands can be entered in the server console. A configuration entry is persistent across restarts; a console command is useful for one-off testing.

8. Rescan newly added folders when necessary
If the console says the resource does not exist after you copied it, run:
refreshrefresh rescans the resources directory and loads resource manifests. Then start the resource:
ensure vehicle-resource-nameYou can also restart the resource after changing files during testing:
restart vehicle-resource-nameUse lifecycle commands from the console only when you understand which version of the files is currently on the server. The command behavior and available resource controls are described in the Cfx.re server-command documentation.
9. Confirm that the resource actually started
Read the server console for a successful start message and for warnings about missing files, dependencies, or manifest syntax. A folder being listed in resources/ does not mean its assets loaded. Resolve startup errors before testing the vehicle in-game.
10. Spawn and test the vehicle
Use the exact model or spawn name from the package instructions with your server’s vehicle-spawning resource or administrative workflow. If your server uses txAdmin, its documentation describes an in-game vehicle menu and controls for starting, stopping, and restarting resources: txAdmin.

Test more than whether the vehicle appears. Check entry and exit points, textures, lights, doors, wheels, handling, sounds, and any scripted features included by the package. A vehicle can spawn while still missing metadata or a dependency. The specific test result depends on the package and your server configuration; do not assume a successful resource-start message proves every feature works.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes
“Resource not found” or “No such resource”
- Confirm the folder is below the server-data
resources/directory, not only in your downloads or server root. - Open the folder and verify that
fxmanifest.luais inside it. - Check that the name in
ensureexactly matches the folder name. - Run
refresh, then tryensure resource-nameagain. - If you used a category folder, ensure the category is only a container and the resource itself is one level below it.
These checks follow the resource-discovery and command behavior described by Cfx.re in its resource introduction and server commands.
Manifest warning or parse error
- Check the spelling and exact filename:
fxmanifest.lua. - Make sure the file is not actually named
fxmanifest.lua.txtbecause of hidden file extensions. - Compare quotes, commas, and paths with the creator’s original file.
- Do not remove package-specific entries while trying to simplify the manifest.
- If the package uses a legacy
__resource.lua, look for an updated version or creator guidance rather than assuming the old file is the preferred format.
The resource starts, but the vehicle does not spawn
- Use the documented spawn/model name, not necessarily the ZIP name or display name.
- Check whether the model and texture files are in the required folder, usually the supplied
stream/directory. - Verify that every metadata file included by the package has the required manifest declaration.
- Read the console for missing-file messages and check that dependencies started first.
- Ask the creator whether the vehicle requires a particular game build or an additional audio or framework resource.
General FiveM documentation cannot identify the correct spawn name or manifest for an unnamed vehicle. Those details come from the specific package.
The vehicle appears with missing textures, bad handling, or broken features
This usually points to an incomplete asset set, a misplaced metadata file, or a missing declaration or dependency rather than a problem with the ensure command itself. Compare your installed folder with the original archive, restore unchanged files, and re-read the package instructions. Avoid mixing files from different vehicle releases unless the author explicitly supports it.

Identify the named prerequisite in the console and in the vehicle’s manifest. Install the required resource, place it under resources/, and start it before the vehicle if the creator specifies an order. Check the prerequisite’s own documentation and version requirements; a resource can be present but still incompatible.
Players see different behavior
First reproduce the issue with a clean restart and confirm that every player is connecting to the same server resource set. Then compare client console messages, model names, and the package’s stated requirements. If only one player is affected, investigate client-side cache or other installed resources after confirming the server resource starts correctly. The vehicle creator is the appropriate source for package-specific compatibility questions.

Safety, licensing, and maintenance
Keep a backup of server.cfg and the original vehicle archive before editing files. Install one vehicle resource at a time so a new error can be associated with a specific change. Record the resource name, version, dependencies, and spawn name in your server notes.
Download from a source you can verify. Cfx.re identifies its Marketplace and FiveM Releases section as places to find resources, while also warning administrators to research dependencies and follow each resource’s terms. For a paid download, confirm with the seller whether the transaction is handled through the Cfx Marketplace or Tebex, and verify what servers or installations the license covers. Do not treat a copied archive or an attractive preview as proof of authorization.
When updating a vehicle, read the changelog and back up the working folder first. Replace the resource as a unit unless the creator documents a file-by-file update. After an update, run refresh if the server is already running, restart the resource, and repeat the same spawn and feature checks.
