To open System Information for another Windows PC, run msinfo32 /computer TARGETNAME from an elevated Command Prompt, replacing TARGETNAME with the remote computer’s name, UNC name, IP address, or fully qualified domain name. Your account must have permission to access that computer’s WMI data.
Run MSInfo32 against a remote computer
- Confirm the target PC is reachable and that your account is permitted to query its WMI data.
- Open Start, search for Command Prompt, then select Run as administrator.
- Enter
msinfo32 /computer TARGETNAME, substituting the target computer’s identifier. For example:msinfo32 /computer BIGSERVER. - Wait for the System Information window to load the remote computer’s information.
Microsoft documents the /computer switch as starting System Information for the specified remote computer and notes that appropriate access permissions are required. See the Microsoft Learn MSInfo32 reference.

Choose how to identify the target
The target can be specified as a computer name, UNC name, IP address, or fully qualified domain name. If a name does not work, try an IP address or FQDN only if you know the correct address or domain name; changing the format does not bypass access permissions or connectivity problems.

MSInfo32 can open an interactive view or save the output to a file. Its documented syntax is:

msinfo32 [/pch] [/nfo <path>] [/report <path>] [/computer <computername>] [/showcategories] [/category <categoryID>] [/categories {+<categoryID>(+<categoryID>)|+all(-<categoryID>)}]
/nfo C:Pathreport.nfosaves an NFO file. If the path does not include the.nfoextension, MSInfo32 adds it./report C:Pathreport.txtsaves a text report. MSInfo32 uses the path as supplied, so include.txtif you want that extension./showcategoriesdisplays category IDs. Use an ID with/category, or combine IDs with/categories, to narrow the information collected.
For example, to save a remote computer’s information as a text report, run msinfo32 /computer BIGSERVER /report C:Pathreport.txt. The account still needs the required remote access.

Why remote MSInfo32 may fail
If the window does not load the remote system’s details, check that the target name resolves correctly, the computer is reachable over the network, and the account has WMI access. Firewall rules and WMI policy can also affect connectivity; the exact rules depend on the environment, so check the organization’s network and security configuration rather than assuming one universal firewall setting.

What MSInfo32 can show in Safe Mode
MSInfo32 can launch in Safe Mode, but Microsoft Support says it cannot provide hardware information there and is limited to system components and the software environment. Use a normal Windows session when you need a hardware inventory.
