Most Intel-only Mac apps run on an Apple silicon Mac through Apple’s Rosetta translation layer. Connect to the internet, open the app, and install Rosetta when macOS prompts you. After that, launch the app normally; Rosetta works in the background.
Check whether the app needs Rosetta
In Finder, select the app and choose File > Get Info, or press Command-I. Read the Kind entry:

On macOS 27, you can also review Intel-based apps in System Settings > General > About > Details.

- Connect the Mac to the internet.
- Open the Intel-only app.
- When macOS displays the Rosetta installation prompt, click Install.
- Enter an administrator or Mac account password if requested.
- Open the app again if macOS does not launch it automatically.
Rosetta is not a separate application that you open. Once installed, it translates supported Intel instructions automatically whenever an Intel app runs.

Install Rosetta from Terminal
If the prompt does not appear, open Terminal from Applications > Utilities and run:
softwareupdate --install-rosettaFollow the on-screen agreement and authorization prompts. Then launch the Intel app normally.

When a Universal app still needs Rosetta
A Universal app normally selects its Apple silicon code. However, it may depend on an Intel-only plug-in, extension, or other add-on. To run the whole Universal app as Intel:
- Select the app in Finder and press Command-I.
- Enable Open using Rosetta.
- Close the information window and launch the app.
Use this only while required Intel add-ons remain installed. Replace those add-ons with Apple silicon-compatible versions, then clear Open using Rosetta so the app can return to native operation.

Update the app and its add-ons
Check the Mac App Store, the app’s built-in updater, or the developer’s website for a Universal or Apple silicon release. Update plug-ins, extensions, drivers, and helper components separately; a native main app can still fail if one of its required components is Intel-only or unsupported. Apple recommends native releases for the best performance and future macOS compatibility.
Why an Intel app may still fail
Rosetta is designed for most Intel Mac applications, but it cannot solve every low-level dependency. Installation alone will not make an app work when it:

- requires a kernel extension that has no Apple silicon-compatible version;
- virtualizes an Intel x86_64 computer platform;
- depends on AVX512 instructions, which Rosetta does not support; or
- uses an old component that the developer no longer supports.
Read the developer’s support notes and look for a maintained Universal or Apple silicon build. If none exists, use a supported replacement rather than assuming repeated Rosetta installations will fix the problem.

Performance and support timeline
Apple says, “In most cases, the difference in an app’s performance when using Rosetta won’t be noticeable.” Actual results depend on the app and its workload, so this is not a guarantee of equal speed, battery life, or feature support.

Apple’s September 1, 2026 developer announcement says macOS 27 is planned to be the final release with general Rosetta support for Intel-only apps. The announced macOS 28 plan retains Rosetta functionality for certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel frameworks. That is a future support plan, not confirmation that macOS 28 has shipped; check Apple’s latest documentation before upgrading.
