How to Run FFmpeg in Docker for a Church’s 24/7 YouTube Stream

A practical Docker and FFmpeg setup for looping church video on YouTube Live, with RTMPS, bitrate guidance, restart behavior, copyright cautions, and troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can run FFmpeg in a Docker container to send a church video feed to YouTube Live, and configure Docker to restart the container after certain failures. That does not guarantee a healthy, uninterrupted stream: YouTube’s ingest session can end, the feed can freeze while FFmpeg remains running, or YouTube can interrupt content for copyright matching. A reliable setup combines a valid YouTube stream URL and key, a tested upload connection, a container restart policy, and monitoring in YouTube Live Control Room.

What you need before you start

  • A church-controlled YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live Control Room. Live availability and account requirements are managed by YouTube.
  • A computer or server that can stay on, run Docker, and reach YouTube’s ingest service over the network. This can be an existing computer, a dedicated small computer, or a VPS; each option leaves someone responsible for its administration and connectivity.
  • A video file or other feed for FFmpeg to send, plus an FFmpeg build with the input formats, codecs, and protocols you intend to use.
  • A stable internet upload connection with headroom above the chosen video bitrate, and a person or process able to check the stream.
  • Church permission and applicable rights for all music, video, and other third-party material in the stream.

This example sends a video file on a loop as H.264 video and AAC audio. It assumes the file is accessible inside the container at /media/service.mp4. For a live camera or a different input, replace the input and looping options to match that source; the YouTube connection and monitoring steps still apply.

Choose a resolution and bitrate your connection can sustain

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For H.264, YouTube lists these recommended ingest bitrates:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations, not a measurement of your church’s connection or a requirement to use those resolutions. A 24/7 service has to sustain its bitrate, not merely reach it in a brief speed test. Test the upload connection at the location and time the stream will run, leave capacity for network variation and other traffic, and check YouTube’s stream-health indicators with representative audio and motion. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule the stream, then find the server URL and stream key for that stream.
  2. Choose the RTMPS server URL shown in Live Control Room when available. YouTube describes RTMPS as an encrypted extension to RTMP; FFmpeg documents RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection. Use the exact URL YouTube supplies rather than guessing a host or path. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions and FFmpeg protocol documentation.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Do not commit it to source control, bake it into a public image, or print it in logs. The example below reads it from an environment variable; restrict access to the environment file and the Docker host.
  4. Confirm the stream’s visibility and scheduling choices in Studio. When the feed starts, use Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health information to verify that YouTube receives the intended picture and sound.

YouTube’s setup instructions say to enter the server URL and stream key into the encoder, start sending the feed, and inspect the preview: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Build a small Docker setup for a looping file

The following Compose example builds an image with FFmpeg installed and starts one looping file. It is a starting point, not a turnkey production stack: choose and pin a maintained FFmpeg base image appropriate to your environment, test its protocols and codecs, and adapt the input path and options for your media. The community example at FFmpeg-livestream-docker is illustrative, not an official Docker or YouTube recommendation.

1. Prepare the files

Create a directory for the deployment, with these files:

  • Dockerfile
  • compose.yaml
  • .env, containing the private YouTube server URL and stream key
  • media/service.mp4, the video to loop

Use a Docker image that includes FFmpeg, or build one from a suitable base. A minimal illustrative Dockerfile using an FFmpeg image is:

Image availability and tags can change; verify the selected image and version before deploying. In a managed environment, pin an image digest after validating it rather than relying indefinitely on a floating tag.

2. Store the ingest details outside the Compose file

Put the exact RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room into .env:

YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL=rtmps://YOUR_SERVER_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY

The URL format above is illustrative only; use YouTube’s actual server URL and key as supplied. Treat this file as a secret: set restrictive filesystem permissions, exclude it from version control, and limit who can read it. Environment variables can still be visible to users with access to Docker inspection or the host, so use your organization’s secret-management approach where available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Define the container and restart policy

Create compose.yaml:

services:
  youtube-stream:
    build: .
    restart: unless-stopped
    env_file:
      - .env
    volumes:
      - ./media:/media:ro
    command:
      - -re
      - -stream_loop
      - "-1"
      - -i
      - /media/service.mp4
      - -c:v
      - libx264
      - -preset
      - veryfast
      - -b:v
      - 8M
      - -maxrate
      - 8M
      - -bufsize
      - 16M
      - -pix_fmt
      - yuv420p
      - -g
      - "60"
      - -c:a
      - aac
      - -b:a
      - 128k
      - -ar
      - "44100"
      - -f
      - flv
      - ${YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL}

This example targets 720p30 material at the listed YouTube-recommended H.264 rate of 8 Mbps; it does not resize the source, and output dimensions and frame rate depend on the input. The -re option reads a file at its native playback rate, -stream_loop -1 repeats it, -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP (two seconds at 30 fps), and the video rate-control options request an 8 Mbps target with an 8 Mbps maximum and 16 Mbps buffer. Confirm the resulting stream in YouTube’s preview and health panel. If the source or chosen frame rate differs, adjust the GOP so the keyframe interval is about two seconds and no more than four seconds. FFmpeg option behavior and available encoders depend on the installed build; see FFmpeg documentation.

Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.

For 1080p30 or 1080p60, do not simply change the bitrate unless the source, encoder, and stable upload link can support it. YouTube lists 14 Mbps for H.264 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for H.264 1080p60. Select the corresponding rate-control values and a GOP appropriate to the frame rate, then test the complete path before relying on it.

4. Start and inspect the stream

  1. From the deployment directory, run docker compose up -d --build.
  2. Check container state with docker compose ps and recent output with docker compose logs --tail=100 youtube-stream. Avoid sharing unredacted logs if they could expose credentials.
  3. Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that the preview appears, audio is present, and stream health is acceptable before treating the deployment as ready.
  4. Observe a representative test long enough to catch buffering, source-file problems, audio issues, and network variation. Keep monitoring during service; an initial successful preview does not establish future health.

What Docker restart policies do—and do not do

Docker says, “Docker provides restart policies to control whether your containers start automatically when they exit, or when Docker restarts.” For an unattended container, unless-stopped is usually a sensible starting point: Docker restarts it after an exit or daemon restart, unless an operator deliberately stopped it. The always policy also restarts after daemon restarts, but its behavior after a manual stop differs; consult Docker’s restart-policy documentation before choosing.

A restart policy responds to container/process exit and Docker daemon events. It does not prove that FFmpeg is producing moving video, that YouTube is accepting the feed, or that viewers can watch it. If FFmpeg hangs without exiting, a restart policy may do nothing. Pair Docker status and logs with YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators, and decide who responds to an alert or a failed stream.

Plan for YouTube stream sessions, not just container uptime

A container can run continuously while the YouTube ingest session or broadcast has a separate lifecycle. YouTube’s current encoder help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That statement does not mean one stream can serve as an unlimited, single archive. A church seeking continuous programming should plan how a stream is created, started, monitored, and replaced or restarted at the appropriate boundary, and how any interruption is communicated to viewers. Check the current Live Control Room behavior for the channel and event rather than assuming that a container restart creates a new YouTube broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Church copyright and unattended playback

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. Matching material can cause a placeholder to replace the stream, followed by interruption or termination if the issue continues. If the church has a license for third-party music or other content, that alone may not prevent automated interruption: YouTube says the rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Resolve rights and allowlisting with the relevant rights owner before leaving a stream unattended. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Troubleshoot the failures most likely to stop the stream

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
Container exits repeatedly Invalid command, missing media file, unsupported codec, or FFmpeg failure Run docker compose logs --tail=100 youtube-stream; check the mounted path, file permissions, and FFmpeg build. Correct the input or options, then recreate the container.
FFmpeg runs but YouTube has no preview Wrong server URL/key, protocol mismatch, or ingest connection problem Copy the current RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room, check for accidental whitespace or shell interpolation, and confirm the build supports RTMPS. Never post the key in a support request.
Preview buffers or stream health is poor Upload instability, bitrate too high for the connection, or competing network traffic Test sustained upload at the streaming location, reduce output bitrate or resolution, reserve network capacity, and retest with actual audio and motion.
Picture appears but audio is missing or wrong Input has no usable audio stream, mapping or codec issue, or muted source Inspect the media’s audio streams with FFmpeg tools, confirm the source audio, and test AAC output in the YouTube preview before the service.
Container is “Up,” but the picture is frozen or YouTube stopped receiving Process is alive while output is stalled, rejected, or disconnected Check logs and Live Control Room health, not only Docker state. Add an independent stream-health check and an escalation procedure; restart policies alone do not detect this case.
Stream is interrupted despite a valid encode Third-party content match or rights issue Check YouTube’s notice and resolve rights; for licensed material, ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting.

FFmpeg’s output FIFO can be configured to attempt recovery from temporary failures using options such as -attempt_recovery 1 and -recovery_wait_time 1. This is an FFmpeg feature to evaluate for a suitable output workflow, not a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery; confirm the installed build and test failure and recovery behavior against your actual ingest setup. See FFmpeg’s full documentation.

Host choices and operating costs

Docker does not remove the cost or responsibility of keeping a host and network path available. An existing church computer may avoid a new hardware purchase but must remain powered, updated, and connected. A dedicated small computer separates the task from a staff workstation but adds hardware and maintenance. A VPS or other cloud host avoids dependence on the church’s local internet path, but adds recurring hosting cost and server administration; no specific provider or price is established here. Choose based on who can monitor and recover the service, the reliability of the relevant upload route, and the organization’s budget. A mini PC is optional, not a Docker requirement.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the church’s goal is to keep uploaded video looping on YouTube without maintaining a local Docker host, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the service streams uploaded video to YouTube, not a camera feed. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for plan details. If that fits the church’s workflow, start the free first day.
