To see which moments held viewers’ attention, open an ended stream in YouTube Studio under Content → Live, then choose Analytics → Engagement and look for key moments for audience retention. Use that report to inspect changes across the stream; average view duration and concurrent-viewer figures provide context, but neither identifies which segment kept people watching.
Find audience retention for an ended live stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Content, then Live.
- Choose the ended stream you want to review and open Analytics.
- Open Engagement and locate key moments for audience retention. If the report is available, use its curve to see where attention rose, fell, or remained comparatively steady. YouTube says live-stream analytics can appear within minutes after a stream ends, but processing can take time. See YouTube’s live-stream metrics guidance.
YouTube is gradually rolling out an updated Studio Analytics experience beginning July 2026, so labels or layout may vary by channel. If you do not see the report, check the stream again later. YouTube’s guidance does not promise a usable retention curve for every long stream, archive, or channel configuration.

Read the retention curve without over-interpreting it
A visible dip marks a point where audience retention weakened; a steadier stretch indicates viewers were more consistently present relative to other parts of that video. These are clues for reviewing the content, not proof of why a viewer left or stayed. Check what was happening at that point in the stream before deciding what to change.

Treat the match as a hypothesis, not a demonstrated cause.
- Look for sustained sections: identify material that appears to hold attention and consider whether it is worth retaining, extending, or testing again in a comparable session.
- Do not use a concurrent-viewer peak as a retention proxy: peak concurrent viewers is the largest simultaneous audience at one moment. It does not show whether viewers stayed through a particular segment.
Use other metrics to explain the pattern
Retention answers a moment-by-moment attention question. Other metrics answer different questions, so read them together rather than treating any one number as a verdict.

Compare sessions fairly
Compare streams with the same format and a similar purpose or length. A devotional music stream, a news simulcast, and a gaming stream may attract different viewing habits; a raw comparison between them can obscure more than it reveals.

- Use impressions and click-through rate to examine appeal and discovery.
- Use views and traffic sources to understand reach.
- Use average view duration and the retention curve, when available, to assess viewing quality.
- Use average and peak concurrent viewers to describe simultaneous audience scale.
Keep the date and format with your notes. YouTube says that, beginning August 24, 2026, views are counted when a video starts playing across formats. Treat that change as a boundary when comparing raw view counts over time; a view count is not the same measure as watch duration. YouTube says partner-program earnings and eligibility use separate engaged or qualified criteria. Details are in YouTube’s content-performance guidance.

A continuous broadcast does not guarantee a complete replay for later analysis. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours and warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” That is an archive limit, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will have a retention report. - When retrospective segment analysis matters, plan shorter broadcast sessions rather than relying on a single uninterrupted day-long archive.
- Keep a local recording backup if you need to review the content independently of YouTube’s archive.
- After each session ends, confirm that its archive exists and check whether Analytics includes audience retention.
- If no retention report appears, do not infer segment-level attention from total watch time, average view duration, or a concurrent-viewer peak.
Export and investigate when useful
YouTube Analytics can filter data by Live, On demand, or Live & on demand, and offers reports such as watch time, audience retention, demographics, playback locations, traffic sources, and devices. Live-stream data can be downloaded as CSV. Analytics is based on Video ID and is processed and despammed, so figures may differ from measurements in Live Control Room; the two views can measure different information. Use Analytics for processed reporting and Live Control Room for the live measurements it provides, rather than expecting their numbers to match exactly. See YouTube’s metrics guidance.
