Run Ethernet through a wall only after you have mapped the route, identified existing wiring and framing, and checked the cable rating and local requirements for that space. Keep low-voltage cable out of the same holes as mains wiring, drill only where the building permits, pull gently, and support and label the cable before closing access. If the path involves a fire-rated wall, an air-handling space, or hazards you cannot identify, stop and ask a qualified installer or your local building authority.
Plan the route before opening the wall
Choose the equipment location and the wall outlet location, then sketch the route between them. An interior-wall path is often practical, but the best route depends on the home’s framing and what is inside the wall. Check for existing electrical wiring and other services, insulation, fire blocking, heat sources, and any fire-rated construction before drilling or cutting.

Leviton’s Basic Residential Installer Guide recommends avoiding heat sources and, where practical, using interior-wall routes. It also advises against external cable runs unless they are installed in conduit. These are general installer recommendations, not permission to drill a particular wall or a substitute for local rules. If the route is unclear, investigate it without enlarging openings or consult a professional first.
Choose cable for the actual space
Select cable category and construction for the network you need, then verify its jacket rating against the route and applicable local requirements. Cable installed in an ordinary wall cavity does not automatically need a plenum rating. Conversely, a cable passing through an air-handling space may require a rating intended for that use.

As one product example, Leviton’s BERK-TEK LANMARK-6 Cat 6 U/UTP CMP cable is identified by the manufacturer as suitable for air-handling ducts and plenums in accordance with applicable code. The cited product information describes a 1,000-foot box format for the referenced model. That example does not establish that CMP is required for every in-wall installation; confirm the rating needed for your particular route.
Before buying bulk cable, account for the route length, the amount needed at each end for termination, and the product’s construction and jacket rating. In Leviton’s structured-cabling setup, its guide limits the category-cable run from a structured media enclosure to a wallplate to 90 meters (295 feet). Treat that as the guide’s recommendation for that setup, not as a determination of the permitted route or a guarantee for every network configuration.

The wall perforation diameter is 19mm(0.74inch), and the compact design allows starlink cables to pass through walls perfectly, making it a good assistant for eliminating wiring clutter and keeping space clean.
- 【Quality Materials】Starlink wall grommet designed for starlink are made of high quality silicone with strong anti-aging, high temperature resistance and high sealing performance, etc. The high quality flexibility makes the casing not easy to deform, the wall hole cover is moisture-proof, can withstand the wind and rain, and is suitable for outdoor environment.
- 【Easy To Install】This wall hole cover designed for starlink cables, which can be wired without unplugging the cable by drilling a 3/4inch hole in the wall and wrapping the wall grommets around the cable that has already been run through the wall, making it very easy to install. In addition, starlink cable wall grommets can prevent the cable from being abraded.
- 【Essential Starlink Accessories】Our starlink cable routing kits are lightweight and small in size, they don't take up much space and you can easily carry them around for easy installation. Outdoor use of wall grommet also prevents water seepage through holes and insects crawling into the room, making them ideal for use in spaces such as caravans, building walls or mobile homes.
- 【What You Will Get】This product includes 6 starlink cable wall grommets; If you have any questions about the process of purchasing from us, please do not hesitate to consult our customer service team. Satisfying our customers is the purpose of all our services!
Keep Ethernet separate from electrical wiring
Do not run Ethernet through the same drilled hole as AC wiring. Leviton’s guide recommends using a separate stud space when possible. If low-voltage and electrical wiring must run in parallel, it recommends 12 inches or more of separation where separation cannot otherwise be achieved; if they must cross, it recommends crossing at 90 degrees. These are the guide’s recommendations, and local rules or site conditions may require a different approach.
Never drill based on an assumption that a wall is empty. Locate framing and existing services first, and stop if you cannot confidently identify what is behind the drilling point. If you encounter wiring, an obstruction, or an unexpected change in construction, do not force the bit or cable through it.

Drill carefully and protect the framing
Leviton’s guide gives a general recommendation for independent one-inch holes positioned 1¼ inches from the edge of framing members. That measurement is guidance, not authorization to drill a structural member: framing type, hole placement, fire blocking, and local requirements can change what is allowed. Check the applicable rules before drilling, especially in engineered or structural members.
Where a penetration could leave cable exposed to nails or screws, use an appropriately installed nail plate to protect it. Make only the openings needed for the route, and do not leave a penetration through a fire-rated assembly unprotected. Firestopping requirements are project- and jurisdiction-specific; have a qualified person determine the correct treatment where applicable.

Pull, support, and label the cable
- Prepare the path. Confirm that the route is clear and that the cable rating suits the space. Use suitable low-voltage installation tools rather than pushing blindly into a closed cavity.
- Pull with controlled force. Leviton’s guide recommends keeping pulling force below 25 pounds. Avoid jerking or forcing the cable, which can damage it. The guide also advises making bends one at a time and following the cable manufacturer’s bend-radius guidance; use broad, sweeping bends rather than tight corners.
- Support without crushing. Use supports intended for low-voltage cable, such as J-hooks or hook-and-loop straps. Leviton’s guide cautions against standard staples, which can damage or compress cable.
- Label and inspect both ends. Label the cable at the wall outlet and equipment end. Before closing access, check that the cable is supported, not kinked or pinched, and that any required protection or firestopping has been addressed.
When to stop and get local advice
Leviton’s guide is general residential installation guidance; it is not a permit determination for an individual home. Ask the local authority having jurisdiction or a qualified low-voltage installer or electrician when any of these apply:
