These controls make unattended runs more predictable; they do not make an agent perfectly autonomous or risk-free.
1. Use print mode for automation
Anthropic documents claude -p (also called --print) as non-interactive mode for scripts and pipelines. Its common-workflows guide also describes using print mode in GitHub Actions. This is the appropriate entry point when a job should complete without an interactive conversation, though behavior can vary with the environment and account.

Choose an output format based on what the next step needs. Text is convenient for a human-readable response; JSON and stream-JSON can support programmatic handling. Anthropic specifically identifies JSON output as useful for scripting and automation because responses can be parsed. Check the current CLI reference for exact syntax and behavior before wiring the command into a production pipeline.

text: straightforward output for logs or a person reading the result.json: structured output suited to parsing a completed response.stream-json: streaming structured output when the consumer needs events as they arrive.
For a first trial, run a bounded task from a disposable branch or isolated workspace and save both the response and resulting diff. Do not treat a successful exit or a well-formed response as proof that the requested change is correct.

2. Give the agent only the tools the task requires
The CLI provides --allowedTools and --disallowedTools to control which tools Claude Code can use. Anthropic’s workflow guidance describes preconfiguring allowed tools for automation. A narrow allowlist can reduce the number of actions a run can take without stopping for approval; a broad grant expands its reach and the consequences of a mistaken instruction.
Decide the tool scope from the task, not from convenience. A job that edits a documentation file may not need shell commands or access to external services. If a task does need commands or writes, limit those capabilities to what it actually needs and inspect the resulting changes. Permission rules and exact configuration syntax can change, so consult the current English permission documentation rather than relying on an old example.
A permission setting is not a substitute for defining the task. State the target files or outcome, what must not be changed, and when the agent should stop and report a blocker. Avoid turning off permission prompts as a general shortcut for unattended execution: Claude Code documents --dangerously-skip-permissions, but labels it for cautious use.

3. Put a ceiling on every run
Use --max-turns to limit agentic turns in non-interactive mode. Pair that limit with a small, testable request rather than asking one run to perform an open-ended project. A ceiling constrains how long the agent can keep acting through turns; it does not guarantee a correct result or impose an external wall-clock deadline.
For scheduled or CI jobs, also set a timeout in the runner or orchestration system and decide whether a failed run may be retried. Those are operational safeguards, not Claude Code features established by its CLI reference. Retries should be deliberate: if a run can modify files or call services, first determine whether repeating the task could duplicate an action or leave partial changes.
- Define one bounded outcome, such as updating a specific test or fixing a named failing check.
- Set a turn limit appropriate to that task using the current CLI syntax.
- Set an external job timeout and an explicit retry policy in the system that launches Claude Code.
- On a limit or timeout, preserve logs and inspect the workspace before deciding whether to resume, revert, or retry.
4. Isolate the workspace and treat inputs as untrusted
Anthropic’s security guidance recommends reviewing suggested commands, checking changes to critical files, and considering virtual machines for scripts and tool calls—especially when external services are involved. Use a disposable branch, worktree, container, or virtual machine appropriate to the task, and keep production credentials and sensitive data out of the run unless the workflow has a separately justified, controlled need for them.

Repository files, issue descriptions, generated content, and other material the agent reads can contain misleading or hostile instructions. Treat that content as input to evaluate, not as authority to expand the task or permissions. Review proposed commands and examine changes to sensitive files before merging or running them.

Third-party MCP servers are not managed or audited by Anthropic, according to its security guidance. Only connect services that the job needs, and assess their permissions and trust separately. Anthropic also cautions that no system is completely immune to attacks; isolation and review reduce exposure but do not guarantee safety.

Use --verbose when detailed turn-by-turn logs will help diagnose a run, and choose JSON output when a downstream process needs structured results. Keep enough information to connect a response to the code changes it produced. A human review of the diff and relevant checks should remain part of the workflow, especially before changes are merged or deployed.

Decide how the automation environment is maintained: pin or otherwise manage the Claude Code version, dependencies, tool configuration, and runner image according to your team’s release process. Anthropic’s setup guide says Claude Code checks for updates at startup and periodically while running, installs updates in the background, and applies them the next time it starts. Because update behavior and CLI details can change, verify the live setup and CLI documentation before relying on a particular version or update schedule.
For repeatability, record the version and configuration used by each job and make changes to that environment intentional. The goal is not to eliminate change, but to know when a different environment may have influenced a different result.

A practical starting pattern
The CLI reference documents these options for print-mode automation: -p for a non-interactive query, --output-format for text, JSON, or stream-JSON, --allowedTools and --disallowedTools for tool access, --max-turns for limiting turns, and --verbose for detailed logging. A conceptual command therefore looks like this, with tool names and values selected for the actual task:
claude -p "Make the requested bounded change and report what changed" --output-format json --max-turns 5 --allowedTools "..." --verboseThis illustrates the controls, not a universal copy-and-run configuration. Confirm exact option syntax and allowed tool names in the installed version’s current documentation. Launch the job in an isolated workspace, apply an external timeout in the runner, and require review of the output and diff before accepting the change.
What unattended execution can—and cannot—mean
Print mode, tool permissions, turn limits, isolation, logging, and human review provide ways to bound an automated run. They do not amount to a guarantee that Claude Code will finish correctly, remain within an intended interpretation of the task, or be safe in every environment. Design the workflow so that a failed, unexpected, or incomplete run is visible and recoverable rather than silently accepted.
