To run a classic DOS Ultima game, put its legally obtained files in a dedicated folder, start DOSBox, mount that folder as a virtual drive, change to the game directory, and run the executable or batch file named in that edition’s manual. Once the sequence works, save it in DOSBox’s [autoexec] section or in a separate configuration file so future launches are automatic.
The exact launcher, disc requirement, memory settings, and speed target vary by Ultima title and edition. The 9,000–11,000-cycle recommendation commonly cited for Ultima VII is a starting profile for that game, not a universal setting for Ultima I through VI, VIII, or IX.

What you need before starting
DOSBox emulates the DOS environment that many early Ultima releases expect. It does not automatically expose your modern computer’s folders to the emulated machine. You must explicitly map a host folder to a DOSBox drive before the game can see its files.

- Legitimate game files: Use files from a copy you own or a licensed packaged edition. Floppy, CD, and storefront releases can have different directory layouts and startup files.
- A dedicated game folder: Create a location such as
C:DOSGamesUltima4or~/DOSGames/Ultima4. Do not mount your entire system drive; a small, game-specific folder limits accidental access and makes troubleshooting easier. - The edition’s documentation: The manual or included setup notes identify the correct executable or batch file. A file named
START.BATin one release does not guarantee that another release starts the same way.
If you received a packaged edition that already includes DOSBox, try its supplied launcher first. It may already contain the mount command, drive-letter assignment, and game-specific settings.

First launch: mount the Ultima folder manually
Use this sequence when you want to understand the setup or when a packaged launcher is unavailable.
- Install or unpack the game. Put all files for one Ultima title and edition inside its own host folder. Keep separate folders for separate games.
- Start DOSBox. You will see a DOSBox prompt, commonly ending in
Z:>. TheZ:drive is DOSBox’s internal command drive; your host files are not there yet. - Mount the host folder. At the prompt, enter a command like:
MOUNT C C:DOSGamesUltima4
On macOS or Linux, use the actual path, for exampleMOUNT C /Users/you/DOSGames/Ultima4. Quote a path containing spaces, such asMOUNT C "C:GamesUltima IV". - Switch to the virtual drive. Type:
C:
The prompt should change toC:>. If it remains atZ:>, DOSBox has not switched drives. - Inspect the files. Run
DIRto list the mounted directory. Look for the subfolder or startup file named in the game’s documentation. - Enter the game directory. If the files are in a subfolder, use a command such as
CD ULTIMA4, then runDIRagain. - Launch the game. Enter the documented executable or batch file, for example
START.BAT,GAME.EXE, or another filename supplied with that edition. Do not guess when the manual names a different file.
A successful launch confirms three things: DOSBox can read the folder, the virtual drive points to the correct location, and you are using the right startup file. If the program reports a missing data file, return to DIR and check that you mounted the folder containing the game’s expected subdirectories, not its parent or a neighboring title.
Why a dedicated mount is safer
MOUNT C C: would expose an entire Windows system drive to the emulated program. It is unnecessary for Ultima and makes accidental file changes more likely. Mount only the game’s directory, or a parent folder containing several games that you intentionally want to manage from DOSBox.
Stop retyping commands with an auto-start configuration
After a manual launch works, put the repeatable commands in a DOSBox configuration file. DOSBox executes lines in the file’s [autoexec] section whenever that profile starts.
- Open the configuration file generated by your DOSBox installation. The exact location and menu path vary by operating system and DOSBox build; use the program’s configuration or “edit configuration” command rather than assuming a fixed path.
- At the end of the file, add the mount, drive switch, directory change, and (optionally) launch commands. A Windows example is:
[autoexec] MOUNT C C:DOSGamesUltima4 C: CD ULTIMA4 START.BAT - Save the file and start DOSBox with that profile. It should mount the folder and launch the game without manual typing.
- If you want a DOSBox prompt after mounting rather than an immediate launch, stop the lines after
CD ULTIMA4. You can then run a different executable or inspect files.
Use one configuration file per game when settings differ. A profile for Ultima VII can have different emulated memory, EMS, UMB, or cycle values than a profile for an earlier title. This avoids changing a working setup every time you switch games. DOSBox supports starting with a selected configuration file; the exact shortcut or command-line syntax depends on the build you installed.

Running editions that expect a CD
Some CD releases look for a disc drive rather than only hard-drive files. DOSBox documents IMGMOUNT for ISO images and for CUE/BIN image sets.
ISO images
With the game folder already mounted as C:, mount an ISO as a second drive:
IMGMOUNT D "C:DOSGamesUltimaCDULTIMA.ISO" -t iso
Then use D: and DIR to verify the disc contents. Follow the edition’s instructions for installing or launching from that drive. A CD image path is a host path, so quote it when it includes spaces.
CUE/BIN images
For a disc represented by a CUE sheet and one or more BIN files, point IMGMOUNT at the .CUE file, not directly at a BIN file:
IMGMOUNT D "C:DOSGamesUltimaCDULTIMA.CUE" -t iso
The CUE sheet describes the tracks and tells DOSBox how to assemble the image. Keep the referenced BIN files in the locations expected by the CUE file.

Changing discs
For a multi-disc image set, mount the set according to the DOSBox manual and use Ctrl+F4 to swap the current disc image when the game asks for the next one. The exact image-set syntax and disc order matter; follow the release’s documentation rather than applying a command from a different edition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPhysical CD drives
Using a physical optical drive depends on the host operating system, drive letter or device path, permissions, and the DOSBox version. The safest procedure is to follow the edition-specific and DOSBox-specific directions for your platform. If an image is available, it is often easier to keep the game files and disc image together in the dedicated game folder.
Ultima VII: a separate starting profile
Ultima VII is unusually demanding for a plain, default DOSBox profile. A DOSBoxWiki game-specific recommendation starts with the dynamic CPU core, roughly 9,000–11,000 cycles, EMS disabled, UMB disabled, and at least 3 MB of emulated memory. These values are a starting point from that game page, not a measured performance guarantee and not a rule for every Ultima release.
In a dedicated Ultima VII configuration, the relevant settings may look conceptually like this (the spelling and available options depend on your DOSBox version):
core=dynamic
cycles=10000
ems=false
umb=false
memsize=3
Choose a value within the 9,000–11,000 range first. If the game is still too slow or too fast, adjust gradually and test in the same scene. Do not copy this cycle range to Ultima IV, V, VI, or other titles without checking their documentation.

Keep Black Gate and Serpent Isle files separate
Ultima VII exists in two major adventures, The Black Gate and Serpent Isle. Keep each game’s original files in its own folder. Mixing executables or data directories can produce missing-file errors, corrupted saves, or a launch that appears to work but loads the wrong resources.
Exult: an Ultima VII alternative
Exult is a separate engine designed for Ultima VII. It is not a general DOSBox replacement for the rest of the series and does not eliminate the need to obtain the original game data. Its documentation explains how to extract files from Windows installers and how to install floppy editions using DOSBox.
Choose Exult when you specifically want its Ultima VII-focused runtime and are prepared to locate the original files. Keep Black Gate and Serpent Isle data in separate locations, and point Exult at the correct game directory. If your goal is faithful execution of the original DOS executable, use DOSBox instead.
Packaged Ultima VII editions
The Ultima VII Complete Edition listing on GOG identifies the package as DOSBox-powered and lists Windows and macOS compatibility, along with manuals and cluebooks. If you already own that packaged edition, launch it as supplied before replacing its configuration manually. The included launcher may set paths and options that are specific to that release.
A packaged storefront build can be easier to start than a loose floppy or CD dump, but its launcher, support route, and included DOSBox version are tied to that edition. If you replace the bundled settings, keep a backup so you can restore the original launch behavior.

“The game runs much too slowly or quickly”: speed troubleshooting
Speed problems usually mean the emulated CPU setting does not match what the game expects, rather than that the game files are damaged.
Start with the documented profile
For Ultima VII, begin with the dynamic core and the 9,000–11,000-cycle range described above. For every other Ultima title, consult that release’s manual or setup notes. A cycle value that feels right for one game can make another unplayable.
Adjust in small steps
DOSBox provides keyboard controls for changing emulated CPU speed while the program runs: Ctrl+F11 decreases cycles and Ctrl+F12 increases them in supported builds. Change one step at a time, wait for the game to respond, and avoid jumping to the highest setting. If the controls do not work in your build, edit the profile’s cycle setting and restart.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check whether the slowdown is actually a loading pause
CD access, disc-image mounting, or a large area loading can look like a CPU problem. If movement is smooth after the area loads, leave the cycle setting alone and verify the disc image and host storage instead.
Launch failures and practical fixes
DOSBox says the command is not found
- Run
DIRafter switching toC:and confirm the file is present. - Use
CDto enter the directory that contains the executable. - Check the manual for the exact filename and extension. DOS filenames may be shortened or distributed as a batch file rather than an obvious game name.
- Confirm that you mounted the game directory, not a folder one level above it.
The game starts, then reports missing data or asks for a disc
- Mount the correct CD image with
IMGMOUNTand assign the drive letter expected by the game. - For a CUE/BIN set, mount the CUE sheet and keep its BIN files available.
- Check whether the edition requires files copied from a disc into a particular subdirectory.
- Do not combine Black Gate and Serpent Isle directories.
Saves or configuration changes fail
The mounted files must be writable by your host operating system. Check the folder’s permissions and whether the files were extracted read-only from an archive or mounted from read-only media. Copy the game into a writable directory and mount that copy, preserving the original files as a backup.
The packaged launcher fails or is unstable
For a GOG-bundled DOSBox launch, support guidance recommends trying OpenGL graphics mode and windowed mode, with a window resolution close to the display. The precise menu route differs between the Galaxy client and offline installers. Apply one change at a time so you can identify which setting resolves the problem.
DOSBox closes immediately
- Temporarily remove the final launch command from
[autoexec]and leave only the mount, drive switch, and directory change. This lets you read any error at the DOS prompt. - Run the startup file manually and note the exact message.
- Restore the original profile for a packaged edition before changing advanced settings.
- Verify that the host path still exists and has not been renamed or moved.
Choosing the right method
| Method | Best when | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual DOSBox setup | You have DOS files or want control over mounts and settings | Works across many editions; exposes the real DOS workflow; supports per-game profiles | You must identify the correct launcher and may need game-specific tuning |
| Packaged storefront edition | You want an installation that already includes DOSBox | Usually less initial setup; may include manuals and cluebooks; the listing for Ultima VII Complete Edition identifies Windows and macOS support | Launcher and support behavior are edition-specific; replacing bundled settings can complicate support |
| Exult for Ultima VII | You want an Ultima VII-specific modern engine and have the original data | Dedicated to Ultima VII; can use files from supported Windows or floppy editions | Does not cover the whole Ultima series; requires correctly separated and located game files |
Manual DOSBox is the broadest choice for classic DOS Ultima titles. A packaged edition is the shortest path when its launcher works. Exult is a targeted alternative for Ultima VII, not a universal solution.
Recommended Free Tools
A repeatable per-game checklist
- Confirm that the files came from a legitimate copy and identify whether the release is floppy, CD, or packaged.
- Create a dedicated, writable folder for that title and edition.
- Read the included manual to find the startup executable or batch file.
- Mount only that folder with
MOUNT, switch toC:, and verify it withDIR. - Mount a CD image with
IMGMOUNTif the game expects a disc. - Launch manually once and record any required drive letter or settings.
- Save the working commands in
[autoexec]or a separate configuration file. - For Ultima VII, test the dynamic core, 9,000–11,000 cycles, EMS and UMB disabled, and at least 3 MB of emulated memory before making other changes.
- If performance or stability is wrong, change one setting at a time and keep the previous working profile.
Final recommendation
Start with the smallest reliable setup: one legally obtained game, one dedicated writable folder, one manual mount, and the launcher named by the edition’s documentation. Automate only after that launch succeeds. Use per-game profiles rather than a single “Ultima” configuration, because memory, disc handling, and speed requirements differ. For Ultima VII, treat the DOSBoxWiki values as an initial experiment; for every other title, let its own documentation determine the executable and tuning.
