To install a Cyberpunk 2077 quest mod safely, start with that mod’s own page: confirm its supported game version, requirements, package format and activation condition. Install only the dependencies it lists, place REDmod or legacy files in the correct folders, enable and deploy them, let REDmod finish initializing, then launch the game and follow the mod author’s instructions for starting the quest. There is no universal trigger for every quest mod.
What you need to check before installing
A quest mod is not a single standardized type of add-on. One release may be a REDmod package, another may use the older archive-folder layout, and a third may require scripting or database frameworks. The safest installation begins by identifying the exact mod and reading its current description and installation notes.

Confirm the supported game version
Write down the Cyberpunk 2077 version named by the mod author. A game update can change the files, scripts or interfaces on which a quest depends. Do not assume that a mod remains compatible simply because it is still downloadable. Check the mod page and every dependency page again after a game update.
Read the Requirements section
Inspect the mod page’s Requirements tab rather than relying only on a download prompt. Install the frameworks explicitly listed for that quest. Depending on the mod, requirements can include Cyber Engine Tweaks (CET), RED4ext, redscript, ArchiveXL, TweakXL or Codeware. These are examples of commonly used frameworks, not a universal checklist. Installing all of them “just in case” adds files and possible conflicts without making an unrelated quest mod work.

Identify the package format
Determine whether the download is a REDmod or a legacy mod before copying anything. The folder names inside the archive are more reliable than the filename alone. A REDmod normally has its own mod folder and an info.json manifest. Legacy packages commonly contain an archive, bin or r6 folder that must be merged with the corresponding folder in the game installation.
Back up saves and record the original state
Make a current save before the first modded launch, preferably outside an active mission. Keep a note of which files or folders you add and which dependencies you install. If the quest changes a save permanently, that clean save gives you a way to test or remove the mod without losing your unmodded progress.
REDmod and legacy mods: which layout applies?
Both formats remain supported in the cited Cyberpunk 2077 documentation, but they are installed and activated differently. Use the format specified by the selected package; do not convert or rearrange files because another mod uses a different layout.

The Windows paths above are examples. Your game root depends on the storefront and installation location. On Linux or Steam Deck, use the platform’s own game directory and the mod author’s platform-specific guidance; do not copy a Windows path literally. macOS is not a supported target unless the game and mod documentation explicitly says otherwise.
Mod manager or manual installation?
A manager can make enablement, deployment and removal easier to see, especially when a quest has several dependencies. Manual installation gives you direct control over every file. Neither method removes the need to understand the package format or read the requirements.

Community guidance recommends a manager for beginners and commonly points to Vortex, while still requiring the same package-specific paths and requirements. Treat manager warnings as installation work to complete, not as messages to ignore.

Install a quest mod with a manager
- Install or open the manager for Cyberpunk 2077. Point it to the correct game installation if it does not detect the game automatically. Confirm that the selected profile is for the same game installation you actually launch.
- Install the quest package. Use the manager’s install-from-file or supported download option, depending on how the author distributes the mod. If the manager reports a format, dependency or game-version warning, stop and compare it with the author’s instructions.
- Install only listed requirements. Add each required framework separately. Read whether a dependency needs a particular version or a separate configuration step. Do not treat optional recommendations as mandatory unless the quest’s instructions say a feature depends on them.
- Enable the mod. An installed package that is disabled is not loaded. Check the manager’s enabled state and review any conflict notices.
- Deploy the files. Use the manager’s Deploy action and wait for it to complete. The CDPR-oriented Vortex guidance recommends resolving red or orange notifications before starting the game. A deployment that is still pending is not a completed installation.
- Start with a controlled loadout. For a first test, keep the core required mods enabled and temporarily disable unrelated additions. This gives you a clean way to determine whether the quest itself loads.
Managers can organize files but cannot infer a quest’s activation condition. After deployment, return to the quest page and follow its instructions for the save, location, message, story progress or other event that begins it.

Manual installation means merging the package’s folders into the game root exactly as the author describes. The most common mistake is creating an extra folder level, such as ending up with Cyberpunk 2077/Cyberpunk 2077/archive/pc/mod instead of the game’s real archive/pc/mod path.
- Open the game root. This is the folder containing the game’s main executable and folders such as
archive,binandr6. A typical Windows Steam-style location is only an example; use your actual library path. - Inspect the archive before extracting. Look for a top-level mod folder,
info.json, and folders namedarchive,binorr6. Do not blindly drag the archive’s outer folder if the instructions expect its contents. - For REDmod, copy the mod folder beneath
mods. The expected pattern isCyberpunk 2077/mods/<mod-name>. Keep the manifest inside that mod’s folder. If the package does not contain the structure described by its author, stop and ask the creator rather than guessing. - For a legacy archive, merge the named folders. An archive-only package generally places its files beneath
archive/pc/mod. If the package includesbinorr6, merge those folders into the matching folders at the game root. Allow the operating system to merge directories, but do not replace unrelated files unless the instructions specifically require it. - Install dependencies in their stated locations. Frameworks often have their own folder rules. Follow each dependency’s documentation instead of assuming that all frameworks belong under
mods. - Record what you copied. Keep the extracted package and a short list of destination folders. This makes disabling or removing the quest safer later.
Enable REDmod and finish deployment
Copying a REDmod folder is not the final step. Enable REDmod-compatible additions through REDlauncher or GOG Galaxy, then allow the launcher’s progress or initialization process to finish. Launching immediately can leave the game running without the newly installed content.
CD PROJEKT RED’s documentation specifically cautions that a manual launch using the -modded option skips the initialization step. Do not use that route as a shortcut immediately after adding a new REDmod. Let the normal launcher process complete first.
Legacy mods do not appear in the REDmod menu. Their absence there does not by itself mean they are broken; verify their legacy paths and required frameworks instead. Conversely, a REDmod that is in the right folder but disabled or not initialized may not load even though its files are present.

If the selected quest lists CET as a requirement, use CET’s installation instructions rather than treating it as a general Cyberpunk prerequisite. Its files belong under bin/x64. On the first game start, CET prompts you to choose the overlay key; complete that prompt so the configuration is created.

CET’s setup guidance also lists a current game installation, the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, windowed-borderless display mode and disabled conflicting overlays among its prerequisites or compatibility conditions. These checks apply to CET-dependent mods, not automatically to every quest package. If a quest does not list CET, installing it adds no demonstrated benefit.
How do I start the modded quest?
There is no reliable universal activation action. The trigger is defined by the individual quest author and may require a particular save, story milestone, message, map location, time, NPC interaction or another condition. Read the mod’s “installation,” “starting,” “walkthrough” or equivalent section after the files are deployed.
If the instructions name a save or story milestone
Load the required type of save and meet the stated progress condition before looking for the quest. If the author says the quest starts after a vanilla mission, complete that mission in the same save rather than expecting a new-game prompt.
If the instructions name a message, call or notification
Enter the game with the required dependencies active and allow time for the event to fire. Check the phone, journal or notification interface described by the author. Do not assume that sleeping, fast travel or restarting will trigger every mod; use only the actions the quest page specifies.
If the instructions name a map location or NPC
Travel to the stated location with the required story conditions met. A missing marker can indicate that the mod has not loaded, but it can also mean the trigger condition has not been satisfied. Verify deployment before moving files or installing additional frameworks.
Verify the installation before changing anything
- Confirm the game version matches the quest’s stated support.
- Confirm every required dependency is installed and enabled.
- Confirm a REDmod is under
mods/<mod-name>with its manifest, or that a legacy package is under the specified archive, binary or script folders. - Confirm the manager reports the mod as enabled and deployed.
- Confirm REDlauncher or GOG Galaxy completed REDmod initialization.
- Launch a test save and follow the author’s exact activation steps.
- Keep the clean save available until the quest has loaded and behaved normally.
Why isn’t my quest mod showing up?
The files are in the wrong folder
Reopen the extracted package and compare its internal tree with the author’s example. Correct the extra-folder-level mistake first. For REDmod, check the complete path and the presence of info.json. For legacy content, check the expected archive/pc/mod, bin or r6 destination.

The package format does not match the activation method
A legacy mod will not appear in the REDmod menu, while a REDmod still needs initialization. Re-read the package description and use the matching route rather than trying to force one format into the other.
A dependency is missing or disabled
Return to the Requirements tab and compare every listed item with the manager’s enabled list or your manual installation record. Check dependencies one at a time; adding several unlisted frameworks makes the cause harder to isolate.
The manager has not deployed the change
Open the manager, resolve its red or orange notifications, enable the quest and run Deploy again. Do not launch while deployment is pending.
The game updated
Check the quest and dependency pages for a new supported version. A previously working script or framework may need an update, and a mod author may temporarily mark the release incompatible. Do not promise yourself that an older quest will work on the newest game build without that confirmation.
How to isolate crashes and other failures
Troubleshoot one variable at a time. First return to the clean save or a backup, then disable unrelated mods while leaving only the quest and its documented requirements. If the problem disappears, re-enable other mods individually until the conflict returns. This is more informative than reinstalling every framework at once.

When the issue is specific to a community quest, its scripts or its trigger, contact the mod creator. CD PROJEKT RED states that it does not create or maintain community mods and does not take responsibility for how they function or for issues caused by their use. Official game support can help with an unmodified installation, but the creator is the appropriate source for a mod-specific defect.
Updating, disabling and removing a quest mod
Before updating
Read the new release notes and supported game version. Check whether the author requires a clean save, a dependency update or removal of an older package. Keep the previous archive until the new version has loaded successfully.
Before disabling
Save in a location that is not inside the mod’s quest or scripted event, then exit the game. Disabling a mod while its quest is active can leave references in a save. The author’s removal instructions take priority over a generic disable action.

For a manager installation
Disable the quest, deploy the changed profile and verify that the manager shows the files as removed or inactive. Keep required shared frameworks enabled if other installed mods still need them.
For a manual installation
Use your installation record and the package’s uninstall notes. Remove only the files belonging to the quest, restore any backed-up original files when instructed, and avoid deleting shared framework files used by other mods.
A safe first-launch checklist
- The exact quest page names your game version.
- The Requirements tab has been checked and only its necessary dependencies are installed.
- You know whether the package is REDmod or legacy.
- The files are in the matching folders, with no accidental duplicate game-root folder.
- Your manager shows the mod enabled and deployed, or your manual record confirms every copy operation.
- REDmod initialization has completed through the normal launcher route.
- A current clean save is preserved.
- You know the quest’s author-defined trigger and have met its conditions.
- You can identify the creator’s support channel if the quest itself fails.
The safe approach is deliberately methodical: the mod page determines compatibility, requirements, format and trigger; the folder layout determines whether the game can find the files; deployment and initialization determine whether it loads; and the author’s activation instructions determine when the quest begins.
