AWS Elemental MediaLive Anywhere runs live encoding on your organization’s on-premises nodes, while AWS manages the service through the MediaLive console. To set it up, plan channel capacity and networking first, create networks, clusters, and nodes in that order, register each node, then configure compatible inputs and a single-pipeline channel with public-internet output. The central planning risk is treating it like ordinary AWS Cloud MediaLive: Anywhere has distinct input constraints, physical-interface requirements, and network dependencies.
What MediaLive Anywhere does—and where it runs
MediaLive Anywhere is an on-premises deployment managed through AWS. The encoding channels run on node hardware at your facility; AWS manages the encoding traffic and software. Your organization supplies and operates the node infrastructure and is responsible for securing access to each node. AWS’s setup guidance specifically warns that node access must be secured to protect running-channel fidelity and published logs and metrics.

Decide whether Anywhere fits your workflow
| Planning question | MediaLive Anywhere | AWS Cloud MediaLive |
|---|---|---|
| Where does encoding run? | On your organization’s on-premises node hardware. | In AWS Cloud infrastructure. |
| Channel pipeline mode | Single-pipeline only. If a second pipeline’s content is present, it is ignored. | AWS does not establish a corresponding Cloud constraint here; check AWS documentation for the Cloud workflow you plan to use. |
| Output delivery | Output must be delivered through the public internet. | AWS does not establish the full Cloud output options here; verify the requirements for your workflow. |
| Inputs | Input support differs from Cloud MediaLive. Use AWS’s Anywhere input compatibility information for each planned source. SDI is supported with corresponding cards and ports. | Input support differs; do not assume an input available in one deployment mode is available in the other. |
| Infrastructure planning | Requires local node capacity, physical interface planning where applicable, and a finalized network design. | Does not use the organization’s MediaLive Anywhere node cluster. |
| Charges and quotas | Anywhere has a distinct input quota category, and its input, output, and channel charges differ from Cloud MediaLive. Check current AWS quota and pricing information for values. | Cloud charges and quotas are separate from Anywhere; check current AWS information for the planned region and configuration. |
Proceed with Anywhere only after confirming that every source type, the public-internet output route, and the single-pipeline requirement fit the production. AWS does not identify approved node models, minimum processor or memory specifications, or SDI card models in its setup guidance; request authoritative compatibility guidance before buying hardware.

Plan capacity, placement groups, and resilience
Inventory the channels and interfaces
For each planned channel, document its input type, required SDI interfaces if any, encoding workload, and the number of channels expected to run at the same time. AWS’s setup guidance calls for planning processing power, memory, and interface requirements, but does not supply universal minimum node specifications. Base sizing on your actual channel profiles and obtain hardware validation for your intended configuration.
Group channels with matching hardware needs
Organize channels into channel placement groups according to their hardware requirements. Nodes in a cluster share processing capabilities and physical interfaces. MediaLive assigns the first running channel in a placement group to a free node; subsequent channels in that group run on the same node. Consequently, a placement group should represent a compatible workload, not merely a convenient label.

Size active and backup nodes
Plan enough active nodes to handle peak concurrent channel demand for each group. Decide separately how much backup capacity the production needs, based on its tolerance for a node failure and the consequences of interruption. AWS does not prescribe a universal backup-node count in its setup guidance; make the choice against your own recovery requirements.

Work with your network engineer to map management, input, and output traffic before provisioning. AWS describes those as typical traffic separations, but the organization may share networks where its design permits. Confirm routes and gateways, reserve CIDR space for push-input addresses and output source addresses, and choose the default route.

The provisioning order matters: create networks first, then clusters, then nodes. AWS warns that a network cannot be modified after a node has been added to a cluster associated with that network. Finalize the network and routing design before adding any nodes; changing it later may require a different deployment plan rather than a simple edit.
Set up MediaLive Anywhere step by step
- Confirm workflow support and capacity. List the channel profiles, concurrent load, inputs, output route, and physical interfaces. Verify every input against AWS’s MediaLive Anywhere input compatibility information. Confirm the single-pipeline mode and public-internet delivery fit.
- Prepare the network design. Agree on management, input, and output paths, CIDRs, routes, gateways, and the default route with the network engineer. Reserve the required address space before proceeding.
- Create the network. In the AWS Elemental MediaLive console, create the network configuration before creating its cluster or adding nodes. Treat the design as final for this cluster once nodes are added.
- Create the cluster and placement groups. Define the cluster around the shared processing and interface capabilities of its nodes. Create placement groups for channels with matching hardware needs and plan their peak concurrent load.
- Prepare each node’s operating system and hardware. AWS’s setup guide specifies RHEL 9.5. Check the current AWS node guidance before installation because operating-system support can change. Confirm that the node and any installed interface cards have been validated for the planned workload; AWS’s setup guidance does not name approved node or card models.
- Create a registration script for each node. In the MediaLive console, create the node registration script using that node’s permanent name, its Active or Backup role, and its interface mappings. Keep each script associated with the node it is intended for.
- Register the node on its assigned machine. Connect over SSH to the node and run only that node’s registration script there. Run it within 24 hours of script creation. AWS estimates activation at approximately one minute; confirm that the node state advances from Registering to Active before relying on it.
- Create and map inputs. Create inputs before the channel. For SDI, AWS supports single-link and quad-link sources when the node has the corresponding card. Create the SDI source records and map each source to the card and port used on each node. Match physical cabling to the installed card, ports, and signal configuration; no specific cable or card model is established here.
- Create the channel with the planned placement. Select the intended cluster and channel placement group based on the capacity design. AWS warns that an unsuitable selection can prevent a channel from running or overload a group for later channels. Set the channel class to single-pipeline and output delivery to the public internet.
- Review permissions and start deliberately. Separate configuration permissions from runtime permissions where appropriate. AWS’s MediaLive Anywhere permissions guidance lists MediaLive actions for managing networks, clusters, nodes, and SDI sources; cluster creation also requires Amazon ECS actions. Grant operators the MediaLive actions needed for their runtime responsibilities. When inputs, node states, and channel settings are confirmed, start the channel and monitor its state and alerts through your operational process.
Input, pipeline, and output constraints to check
- Input compatibility is mode-specific. Do not assume that an input supported by AWS Cloud MediaLive is supported in Anywhere mode. Verify every source type in AWS’s Anywhere input information before designing the channel.
- SDI depends on physical hardware. Single-link and quad-link SDI require corresponding node cards. Source records must be mapped to the card and port on each node. AWS’s setup guidance does not identify approved card models or node configurations.
- Use a single pipeline. Anywhere channels must be single-pipeline. Content from a second pipeline, if present, is ignored.
- Plan for public-internet output. Anywhere channels cannot run on an Amazon VPC and use public-internet output delivery. Ensure the organization’s routes and security design support that path.
- Check Anywhere quotas separately. AWS identifies a separate MediaLive Anywhere input quota category. Confirm applicable quotas before a production launch.
Permissions and shared responsibility
AWS manages the encoding traffic and software updates; your organization operates the on-premises nodes and must secure access to them. Protect node access and the channel’s fidelity, logs, and metrics as part of the deployment’s security controls. For permissions, use AWS’s MediaLive Anywhere permissions guidance to distinguish management actions from runtime duties. Cluster creation additionally requires Amazon ECS actions, according to that guidance.

Costs and operational planning
MediaLive Anywhere charges for inputs, outputs, and channels differ from AWS Cloud MediaLive charges. Because prices and quotas can change and depend on the planned configuration, consult AWS’s current pricing and quota information before committing to hardware or production capacity; no numeric AWS price is established here.

Troubleshooting common setup failures
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Node remains in Registering instead of becoming Active | The script may have been run on the wrong node, after its 24-hour validity window, or with incorrect interface mappings. | Confirm the permanent node name and role, use the script created for that node, verify mappings, and run a newly created script on the assigned node within 24 hours. |
| Channel will not run | The selected cluster or placement group may not have suitable capacity or hardware; the input may not be supported in Anywhere; the channel may not meet the pipeline or output constraints. | Check the channel’s chosen cluster and placement group against the capacity design, verify input compatibility, and confirm single-pipeline mode and public-internet output. |
| Later channels overload or fail in a placement group | Channels grouped together may not have compatible hardware needs, or concurrent demand may exceed planned node capacity. | Revisit workload grouping and peak-load sizing. Since channels in a placement group are assigned to the same node after the first running channel, avoid mixing incompatible or oversized workloads. |
| SDI input is unavailable or mapped incorrectly | The node may lack the corresponding SDI card, the physical port mapping may be wrong, or the single-link/quad-link arrangement may not match the source. | Verify the installed card and port against the source configuration, then check the SDI source record and node interface mapping. Validate card compatibility with AWS before deployment. |
| Network configuration no longer matches deployment needs | The network design may have been changed after nodes were added to an associated cluster. | Finalize routes, CIDRs, gateways, and the default route before node addition. AWS says the associated network cannot be modified after nodes are added, so consult AWS guidance on the supported recovery or redeployment path for the specific configuration. |
| Output does not reach its destination | The workflow may rely on a VPC route or a path other than the required public-internet delivery, or public routing may be incomplete. | Confirm the channel’s delivery configuration and validate the output route, gateway, and network policy with the network team. |

MediaLive Anywhere is for on-premises live-encoding workflows. If your goal instead is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service built for that use case—not a replacement for SDI-based live production. Its three steps are: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The stream continues from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on.
- Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- It includes 24/7 looping and playlists, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month; other billing periods are available, and you can cancel any time. UPI and cards are supported in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
StreamNeo streams uploaded videos to YouTube only; it does not go live from a camera. Visit StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
