You can run Android apps through the Google Play Store and Linux apps through ChromeOS’s Linux development environment—but support depends on your Chromebook, the app, and any work or school restrictions. These are separate setups: Play Store apps install like mobile apps, while Linux apps run in a Debian environment you manage with Terminal and APT.
Before you begin: check Chromebook and account support
Update ChromeOS before setting up either environment. Google Play is available only on some Chromebooks. If Settings → Apps → Manage Google Play preferences is missing, Google says the Chromebook does not support Android apps. On a work or school device, an administrator may also restrict the Play Store, app downloads, or Linux.

Android app compatibility is separate from whether the Play Store is available. An app may not support Chromebooks, or it may require hardware your model lacks, such as GPS. Linux has its own feature and peripheral limits, described below.

- Open Settings → Apps → Manage Google Play preferences.
- If the option is available, follow the prompts and accept the terms.
- Open the Play Store, find the app, and download it to the Chromebook. Having the app on another Android device does not automatically install it here.
- Open the installed app from the Launcher. Supported apps may offer phone, tablet, or resizable layouts.
Apps may request access to the Chromebook’s Downloads location; review permissions before granting access. Turning off the Play Store erases Android app data and settings on the device. See Google’s instructions for using Android apps on a Chromebook for current steps and settings.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
If an app is missing or will not install
- If Play Store preferences are absent, the Chromebook may not support Android apps; on managed devices, ask the administrator whether policy blocks access.
- If the app appears unavailable or says the device is incompatible, check whether its developer supports Chromebook and whether the model has any required hardware capability.
- If an installation fails, restart the Chromebook, check the internet connection, and install available ChromeOS updates. Google’s Android app troubleshooting guidance covers these checks.
Run Linux apps in ChromeOS
ChromeOS’s Linux development environment provides a Debian environment for command-line tools and Linux applications. Linux is off by default; setting it up creates an environment separate from the Play Store path.
- Open Settings → About ChromeOS → Developers.
- Beside Linux development environment, select Set up.
- Follow the prompts. Google says setup can take 10 minutes or more; when it finishes, a Terminal window opens.
- Use Terminal to run Linux commands and install supported packages with APT. For example, update the package lists with
sudo apt-get update.
Google’s Linux setup and usage instructions explain package management, file sharing, backup and restore, and how to remove the environment from the same settings page.

Linux limits and permissions to consider
- Google’s support page currently lists cameras, Android emulators, and hardware acceleration—including GPU and video decode—as unsupported. Check that page before relying on a particular workload or peripheral, since support can change.
- Android devices are supported over USB; other devices are not yet supported according to Google’s current Linux documentation.
- Linux apps share a sandbox with one another. A harmful Linux app can affect other Linux apps, though Google says it cannot affect the rest of the Chromebook.
- Files and permissions shared with Linux are available to all Linux apps. Share only folders and files the apps need.
If Linux has problems after setup
Restart the Chromebook and update Linux packages in Terminal with sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade. A restart may be needed after updates. Google says the environment checks for packages after setup and every 24 hours while running. Follow Google’s Linux troubleshooting and update guidance if the issue continues.

If an app has both a web version and an Android version, Google recommends trying the web app first in its managed Chromebook app guidance. For school deployments, Google advises checking app requirements and testing on a small number of managed Chromebooks before a wider rollout. Its general deployment guidance recommends at least 4 GB RAM and 32 GB storage for Android apps; this is not a guarantee of performance for a particular app or an absolute minimum for every use. App sizes vary and consume local storage.
