You can send a live camera, video file, or network source from Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm to YouTube using FFmpeg, but the right command depends on the input and the Pi’s available encoders. The basic path is capture or read the source → select or encode video and audio → mux as FLV → send to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS. For a Pi camera, use Bookworm’s rpicam-vid tools rather than assuming older raspivid tutorials still apply. Treat the examples below as starting points to validate on your specific Pi and installed FFmpeg build, not as a tested, universal recipe.
What you need to decide before streaming
First identify the source, Pi model, and whether FFmpeg must encode the video or can pass an already compatible video stream through unchanged. A Pi camera uses a different capture path from a USB camera, a file, or a network stream. The Pi generation and installed software determine which encoders and input options are available.

- Source: Pi camera, USB/V4L2 camera, file, or network input.
- Pi model: Hardware H.264 encoding is available on some models; Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders according to Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation.
- Output: Choose a YouTube-supported codec, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio format, and RTMP/RTMPS ingest settings.
- Network: Your sustained upload capacity must have headroom above the configured stream bitrate.
FFmpeg options vary by input type and build. Confirm what is installed before copying a command: ffmpeg -version, ffmpeg -hide_banner -encoders, and the relevant input or encoder help (for example, ffmpeg -hide_banner -h encoder=libx264). Raspberry Pi OS uses APT for software management; package availability and codec support can vary between images and builds. The installed FFmpeg’s own help is authoritative for its supported options.
Set YouTube’s ingest and output requirements
In YouTube Studio, open Go live in Live Control Room and use the current stream’s displayed ingest configuration and stream key. Do not assume one fixed endpoint: use the endpoint and settings shown for your stream. Keep the key private; do not put it in a public script, screenshot, or repository. If it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a keyframe interval of 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. For stereo audio, its recommendations include a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps bitrate. These are YouTube’s service recommendations, not proof that a particular Pi and FFmpeg build can encode every listed format in real time. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings in Live Control Room when choosing a profile.

For a first attempt, select a resolution and frame rate your Pi can sustain, use a supported codec, CBR where encoding, and set a 2-second keyframe interval. Don’t guess a bitrate from an incomplete table or choose one solely by resolution: check YouTube’s current bitrate guidance, then make sure your measured upload capacity can sustain it with headroom.
Prepare Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm and FFmpeg
- Check the OS and hardware. Record your Pi model and confirm the camera or capture device is detected. For a Pi camera, use the Bookworm-era
rpicam-*applications. Legacyraspividinstructions may not apply. - Check the camera tools. For a Pi camera, inspect the available options with
rpicam-vid --help. A short local capture or preview can help isolate camera problems before adding FFmpeg and YouTube. - Install or update FFmpeg using APT if needed. Check the package and installed version with
apt policy ffmpegandffmpeg -version. Do not assume a Debian Bookworm manual describes every option or encoder in your particular Raspberry Pi OS image. - Check encoders and input support. Use
ffmpeg -hide_banner -encodersand the relevant help output. If an option is rejected, confirm it exists in the installed build instead of transplanting flags from an older tutorial. - Test the source locally. Confirm video is moving and audio is present before sending anything to YouTube. This narrows troubleshooting to capture, encoding, or delivery rather than all three at once.
Choose the capture path for your source
Pi camera
Raspberry Pi’s rpicam-vid is the video capture application. It can produce an encoded video bitstream, and Raspberry Pi documents a libav backend that integrates with FFmpeg. The documentation says hardware H.264 is used when available, including with libav when present; availability depends on the device and software. Decide whether to use rpicam-vid to capture and pipe output to FFmpeg, or use its libav integration. Check the installed help for exact options and supported behavior before building a command.
A raw H.264 pipe can carry video but does not automatically provide an audio source. If your stream needs sound, add and map a separately verified audio input; do not assume camera capture includes microphone audio. The exact device name, audio input format, and FFmpeg options depend on the microphone and installed build.
USB camera
USB cameras commonly expose video through V4L2, but the device path, supported pixel formats, resolutions, and frame rates vary. Inspect the device with the tools available on your image and confirm its modes before configuring FFmpeg. Add an audio input separately if needed. Ensure that FFmpeg selects the intended video and audio streams rather than relying on defaults that may differ between devices.

Video file
A file is not a live capture source. To send a prerecorded file at real-time speed, use FFmpeg’s real-time input pacing option -re before that input. Inspect the file’s streams first, then decide whether to copy compatible video/audio or encode them to the profile you selected. A file can have multiple tracks or codecs YouTube won’t accept in the chosen output, so stream selection and conversion need to match the actual file.
Network source
Use the protocol and input options appropriate to the source URL or device. FFmpeg’s input syntax and available protocols depend on the installed build. Check the input independently before adding the YouTube output; a source that disconnects, buffers, or changes format can interrupt the outgoing stream.
Build and validate an FFmpeg command
There is no single safe command for every Bookworm installation, source, and Pi. FFmpeg’s general command-line rule is to place input options before their corresponding -i input, and output options after the inputs they affect. Select streams deliberately, then choose stream copy or encoding for each one. The following are command shapes, not tested recipes; replace the endpoint with the active value from YouTube Live Control Room and keep the stream key private.
File input: real-time playback
ffmpeg -re -i input-file.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"
This example attempts to copy the first video and optional first audio stream without re-encoding. It will only work if the selected streams, container, and codec combination are accepted by the installed FFmpeg build and YouTube’s current ingest requirements. If it reports an unsupported codec or muxing error, inspect the file and use encoders available on the Pi to convert the incompatible stream. Do not remove -re when you intend to play a file in real time: without pacing, FFmpeg may send the file as quickly as it can read it.

- KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
- SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
- SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.
- IMPROVEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS MODELS: This latest model of the Raspberry Pi 4 offers groundbreaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, connectivity, memory, and more! The desktop performance of this model is comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.
- VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.
The endpoint text above is explanatory, not a literal YouTube URL. Insert the current ingest URL and key from Live Control Room only on your private device. Avoid saving secrets in shell history or sharing command output that reveals them.
Encoding instead of copying
When conversion is necessary, replace stream-copy settings with an encoder and output profile supported by the local build. For example, libx264 is a possible software H.264 encoder only if it appears in ffmpeg -encoders. Configure CBR using options supported by that encoder, set a keyframe interval corresponding to YouTube’s recommended 2 seconds, and encode audio to a supported format if the source audio is incompatible. The precise flags depend on encoder and frame rate; inspect the encoder help rather than assuming flags apply across builds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a Pi camera, rpicam-vid can capture an encoded stream, while FFmpeg can process, select, encode, or mux input and send it onward. Raspberry Pi documents libav use with hardware H.264 where available. A pipeline that captures video and feeds FFmpeg must agree on the actual output format and timing; a bare H.264 video pipe does not supply audio. Verify the capture and FFmpeg stages separately before combining them.
Pi 5 and latency
Do not assume Raspberry Pi 5 follows the same hardware-encoding path as earlier Pi models. Raspberry Pi documents software video encoders on Pi 5, which generally have longer frame latency than older hardware encoders. Its rpicam-vid --low-latency option changes encoder behavior to emit frames sooner; documented tradeoffs include slightly reduced coding efficiency, potentially lower maximum frame rate, and less efficient multicore use. Raspberry Pi states that Pi 5 still easily achieves 1080p30, a vendor statement rather than an independent test of this YouTube workflow. Use the low-latency option only when latency matters, and test the actual resolution, movement, audio, and stream duration you need.

Test before the public stream
- Start with a private or unlisted test as appropriate. Confirm that YouTube receives the stream and that the preview shows the expected source.
- Check audio and representative movement. A static test image may not reveal encoding overload or dropped frames under motion. Confirm audio is present, in sync, and not clipping.
- Review stream health and messages in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube advises testing before an event and monitoring stream-health feedback while live.
- Compare upload capacity with the configured bitrate. Measure the connection under realistic conditions; Wi-Fi variation or other household traffic can reduce available capacity. A wired connection, when practical, can remove one source of variability.
- Run a sustained test. Observe CPU load, temperature, FFmpeg logs, audio, and YouTube health for long enough to expose problems that a brief preview misses.
Troubleshoot by layer
YouTube preview is blank
- Check that the camera or input itself produces frames before involving YouTube.
- Verify that FFmpeg selected a video stream and, if needed, an audio stream.
- Check codec/container compatibility and the output format.
- Confirm you used the active ingest endpoint and stream key from Live Control Room, without exposing the key while checking logs.
FFmpeg rejects an option or encoder
Options and encoders depend on the installed build. Review ffmpeg -version, ffmpeg -hide_banner -encoders, and the relevant -h output. Replace unsupported settings with options documented by that installed encoder; an older forum recipe is not proof that an option works on Bookworm.
Frames drop or encoding falls behind
Reduce resolution or frame rate, remove costly filters, and check whether the device and installed build expose hardware H.264 for the chosen path. On Pi 5, account for software encoding and test --low-latency only if reducing latency is worth its documented tradeoffs. Test representative motion rather than judging performance from a static scene.
Stream buffers or drops after starting
Compare sustained upload capacity with the configured bitrate and review YouTube’s health messages. Lower the output bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the profile, then retest under realistic network use. A stream can start successfully and still fail when upload capacity fluctuates.
Video works but audio is absent or wrong
Check whether the source actually contains audio, whether the correct audio input or file stream is mapped, and whether its codec and sample rate are accepted by the output profile. For separate microphone input, inspect its device format and confirm synchronization with video during a test.
Copyright, reused content, and keeping a stream running
Before streaming music, performances, or other recordings, make sure you have the rights and permissions needed for YouTube distribution. A live encoder does not grant permission to use copyrighted material. Separately, YouTube monetization eligibility and reused-content review are not the same as whether an encoder can send a stream; check YouTube’s current channel policies rather than assuming a technically successful broadcast will qualify for monetization.

FFmpeg on a Raspberry Pi is a do-it-yourself delivery path: the Pi, capture device, and network connection must remain available while it runs. It can suit a test, event, or setup where you can monitor the device. For a stream intended to loop continuously, consider what should happen after power, network, or ingest interruptions and how you will detect them. Do not interpret an automatically reconnecting FFmpeg process as a guarantee that YouTube has resumed a healthy stream.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use an older Raspberry Pi camera tutorial on Bookworm?
Check its capture-app names and encoder assumptions first; Bookworm uses the rpicam-* camera applications, and model-specific encoding paths differ.
Does a Pi camera stream automatically include microphone audio?
No. Confirm whether your capture path supplies audio; a video-only H.264 pipe needs a separately configured audio source if sound is required.
