To change prerecorded videos during one continuous YouTube livestream, control the program sent by your encoder—not a playlist in the YouTube player. In OBS Studio, add the videos to a VLC Video source, set their order, and enable looping if needed. Keep the OBS session and YouTube broadcast running while the source plays. For a switch at a particular clock time, use a separately configured scene or automation tool; the standard OBS playlist controls do not document exact-time scheduling.
Know which playlist controls what
“Playlist” can refer to different things in a livestream workflow:

- YouTube player playlist: A viewer can repeat videos or playlists while watching YouTube. That playback control does not change the video your encoder sends into a live broadcast. YouTube Help explains the viewer-side loop control.
- OBS media playlist: OBS’s VLC Video source plays a list of files into the scene sent to YouTube. Its controls include item order, shuffle, and looping. The OBS Media Sources guide documents these options.
- Scheduled YouTube broadcast: Scheduling a live event sets up the broadcast, not the times at which your local encoder changes media. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API reference treats the broadcast event and the stream carrying video as separate resources.
- Timed scene automation: A separate control layer can switch the OBS program based on triggers. A timer for elapsed time is not necessarily the same as a switch at a chosen wall-clock time.
Changing the encoded program and ending the broadcast are separate actions: a scene or media change can alter what viewers see without requiring you to end the YouTube event.

- Install OBS Studio and VLC. The VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. Match the architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Check the current OBS guide if your installation differs.
- Add the VLC source to your broadcast scene. In OBS, select the scene that will go to YouTube, add a source, and choose VLC Video. Add the media files you want to play. Arrange them in the intended order.
- Choose whether to shuffle or repeat. Leave Shuffle Playlist off when the sequence matters. Turn on Loop Playlist to begin again after the final item; leave it off to play the list once.
- Check what happens when the source is hidden. OBS provides visibility behavior that determines whether media continues, pauses, or stops while its source is not visible. Set this deliberately if you plan to hide or switch away from the source.
- Start the encoder session for your scheduled or active YouTube broadcast. Confirm that the OBS preview shows the intended source, and monitor the broadcast and stream health. Scheduling a YouTube event does not schedule the individual files in the OBS playlist.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation is dated January 11, 2022. Interface labels and behavior may change between versions; consult the current guide if the controls in your installation differ.

Change videos during the live broadcast
For a list that should simply advance from one file to the next, let the VLC Video source play the ordered list. To change to a different program block while live, switch the active OBS scene or media source. Keep the encoder session and YouTube broadcast running; ending the broadcast is not required just to change what the encoder is sending.
If you add files to a playlist that is already playing, verify the result in your own setup before relying on it on air. An OBS forum thread opened May 2, 2023, discusses inconsistent playlist-refresh behavior reported by one operator; it does not establish a universal limitation. Rehearse changes in a private or unlisted run.
Schedule a switch for a particular time
The standard VLC Video playlist controls document sequence, shuffle, and loop behavior—not a setting to play a chosen item at a specific wall-clock time. If the switch must happen at a planned time, configure separate OBS scenes or sources and use a scene automation or control method whose trigger matches your need.

- Set up a separate scene or source for each program block.
- Choose an automation method and confirm whether it triggers after elapsed time, on a media event, or at a wall-clock time. Do not assume those trigger types are interchangeable.
- Check current plugin or tool support and rehearse the transitions in a private or unlisted run before relying on them live.
An OBS forum contributor suggested Advanced Scene Switcher macros in a 2023 discussion as one way to automate scene transitions. That is community advice, not an official guarantee of exact-time playlist behavior.

Troubleshooting
The playlist does not appear in the OBS source list
Confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS. In particular, the OBS guide notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Reopen or update the relevant applications if the source is still unavailable.

The files play in the wrong order
Review the order of items in the VLC Video source and make sure shuffle is off. A YouTube player playlist setting does not set the order of files being sent by OBS.
The playlist stops after the last file
Enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should repeat. If the source is hidden during a scene change, check its visibility behavior, which determines whether it continues, pauses, or stops while not visible.

A newly added file does not appear while live
Do not assume an already-running playlist will refresh in a particular way. Check the source and preview, then rehearse the update in a private or unlisted run before using it in a public broadcast.
The video changes, but not at the intended clock time
Playlist order and looping are not wall-clock scheduling. Check the automation trigger you configured—elapsed time, a media event, or a clock-time trigger—and test it before going live.

The broadcast ends when you meant only to change the video
Changing the encoded program means switching the active OBS scene or media source; ending a YouTube broadcast is a different action. The YouTube Live Streaming API reference distinguishes the broadcast event from the stream carrying video.

Check copyright and reused-content issues
Having a file available to play does not by itself establish that you have the rights to broadcast it. Confirm that you have permission to use the video and its audio on YouTube, and review YouTube’s applicable rules before building a recurring stream. Repeating prerecorded material also does not guarantee monetization eligibility; assess the channel and content against YouTube’s current policies rather than treating continuous playback as a shortcut.
