You can run an FFmpeg-based YouTube stream from a headless Raspberry Pi, but the right setup depends first on whether the Pi is capturing a Raspberry Pi camera or relaying an existing IP camera. Use rpicam-vid for Pi-camera capture, or have FFmpeg read the camera’s RTSP stream. Before sending either feed to YouTube, confirm YouTube’s current Live ingest protocol and encoder recommendations in Live Control Room; the older RTMP commands found in community examples are not a safe basis for a current production configuration.
Choose the input and identify the Pi
A Pi-camera stream and an RTSP relay are different workflows. In the first, the Pi captures video locally; in the second, it receives a feed from a network camera and forwards it. Identify the board model as well: Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders, so its real-time performance and latency can differ from boards with hardware encoding. Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation and rpicam-vid guide describe current capture options and board-dependent capabilities.

- Pi camera: use Raspberry Pi’s
rpicam-vidcapture application. It writes an encoded video bitstream and uses H.264 hardware encoding when available. Its documentedlibavbackend can encode audio and video, save to a file, or stream over a network. - RTSP camera: FFmpeg reads the camera’s network stream. This relies on the camera’s actual stream details and network availability; examples posted by FFmpeg users in 2019 and 2022 are historical demonstrations, not current YouTube setup instructions (FFmpeg streaming guide).
For remote administration, prepare Raspberry Pi OS and enable SSH during setup. The exact setup steps depend on the OS image and version; do not assume that a desktop session or connected monitor will be available once the stream is running.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose between copying, remuxing, and encoding
Inspect what the source actually supplies before building the output. Stream copy avoids decoding and re-encoding, but it is suitable only when the source codecs and the chosen output path are acceptable to YouTube. Remuxing changes the container without re-encoding; it cannot make an unsupported codec compatible. Transcoding is necessary when you must change the codec, resolution, frame rate, or audio, and adds processing load that must be tested on the particular Pi.

- Copy: lowest processing overhead when the input is already compatible end to end.
- Remux: useful when the encoded streams are acceptable but their packaging needs to change.
- Transcode: use only when conversion is needed; measure CPU load, temperature, dropped frames, and latency during a sustained test.
Raspberry Pi’s streaming guidance cautions that unencapsulated H.264 can have poor downstream compatibility and discusses MPEG-2 Transport Stream packaging as a more compatible choice for many network consumers. That is general Raspberry Pi streaming guidance, not a YouTube-specific ingest specification.
Capture or relay the video
For a Raspberry Pi camera
Use rpicam-vid to capture encoded video. Its bitrate option sets a target bitrate and its intra option controls how frequently I-frames are produced. These are capture controls, not recommended YouTube values. Choose settings only after checking YouTube’s current encoder guidance and confirming that the selected mode runs reliably on your board. On Raspberry Pi 5, the guide notes that --low-latency can reduce latency at some cost to coding efficiency; test the trade-off with the actual scene and network.

The libav backend is an available route for saving or network-streaming audio and video, with hardware H.264 encoding used when present. Options depend on the installed Raspberry Pi software and build, so verify them against the guide and your local rpicam-vid help output rather than copying a command for a different model.

For an RTSP camera
Configure FFmpeg to read the camera’s RTSP URL, then select copy, remux, or transcode according to the source streams and the current YouTube requirements. Check the camera’s own documentation for its supported stream profile, credentials, and audio track. A 2019 user report describes copying an RTSP camera feed to an RTMP YouTube endpoint with low CPU use on that individual setup, but its old software and hardware do not establish current compatibility or performance. A 2022 discussion likewise illustrates that stream details and FFmpeg version affect whether copying works.

- KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
- SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
- SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.
- IMPROVEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS MODELS: This latest model of the Raspberry Pi 4 offers groundbreaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, connectivity, memory, and more! The desktop performance of this model is comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.
- VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.
Confirm YouTube ingest settings before publishing
Start or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, then use its current encoder guidance to select the ingest protocol, video and audio codecs, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval. These values can change, and the available evidence here does not establish current requirements. Do not copy a historical RTMP URL or fixed settings from an old forum post as though they were current instructions.
- Create the live event in YouTube Live Control Room and review the encoder instructions shown for that event.
- Keep the stream key private. Enter the key only into the sender configuration, do not publish it in a script, log, screenshot, or public repository, and regenerate it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Match the Pi output to the current YouTube recommendations. Treat Raspberry Pi bitrate and I-frame controls as encoder settings to configure, not as platform recommendations.
- Check the incoming signal in Live Control Room before relying on it. Confirm video, audio, playback, timestamp continuity, and whether reconnecting the sender restores the feed.
Plan audio rather than assuming it exists
An RTSP camera may provide audio, while a Pi-camera capture setup may need audio from a separate input or another deliberate source. Historical FFmpeg examples show both adding an audio playlist for a camera with no audio and using a null audio source; they do not prove that YouTube universally requires audio. Check the track that reaches Live Control Room and use only an audio source you have the right to transmit.

Run headlessly and supervise the process
A headless stream must survive more than the initial launch: the Pi needs reliable power and network access, and the FFmpeg or capture process needs a service manager or another restart mechanism. Configure the service for your OS and installed binaries, protect credentials, and direct logs somewhere you can inspect remotely. No single service-file example is established here, so validate the unit and restart behavior on the target Pi instead of treating a generic sample as production-ready.
Recommended Free Tools
Before leaving it unattended, test a sustained stream from the actual camera and Pi, deliberately interrupt the network or sender, and verify recovery from both the Pi’s logs and YouTube’s receiver view. Confirm that the stream resumes with continuous-looking audio and video rather than merely seeing the process restart.

Troubleshoot common failures
- No camera frames: verify the camera connection, OS camera support, and capture application output locally before involving FFmpeg.
- RTSP input fails: confirm the camera URL, credentials, reachability, and that the camera still serves that stream profile; test the input independently of YouTube output.
- High CPU use or stuttering: check whether FFmpeg is transcoding rather than copying, and whether the Pi model can sustain the selected encode. Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoding; lower latency settings may trade coding efficiency.
- YouTube reports an invalid or missing signal: compare the sender’s actual protocol and stream parameters with the current Live Control Room instructions. Do not assume an older community command matches today’s ingest configuration.
- Video works but audio is absent: inspect whether the input has an audio track and whether the output path includes it. Add a suitable audio source only if needed and permitted.
- Stream stops after a disconnect: inspect service logs and test restart/reconnect behavior; a process supervisor does not by itself prove that the receiver has resumed playback.
- Playback is unreliable despite valid H.264: review packaging as well as codec. Raspberry Pi notes that raw, unencapsulated H.264 may have poor compatibility for downstream consumers.
