Run FFmpeg as the container’s foreground process, then give the Docker container a restart policy such as unless-stopped or on-failure. That lets Docker relaunch FFmpeg after a qualifying container exit. It does not fix a bad input, invalid YouTube credentials, or a continuing network failure, and it does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream.
The stream path is media source → FFmpeg → YouTube Live. Docker packages and runs FFmpeg; YouTube supplies the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key. For a stream that must survive output interruptions, FFmpeg’s own recovery options are a separate layer to consider.

What you need before you start
- A Docker host that can remain online for the intended stream duration. This can be a machine you control or a host such as a VPS.
- A media source FFmpeg can read, such as a local file or another supported input. If the file is on the host, make it accessible inside the container, typically with a bind mount.
- A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live Control Room, where you can obtain the current RTMPS URL and stream key.
- An FFmpeg build that supports the input format, codecs, and output options you intend to use. Check the options available in the build installed in your image.
Keep the stream key private. Do not put a real key in a public command, image, repository, or shared Compose file.
Get YouTube’s RTMPS URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream key from the stream settings. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast.
- Use the RTMPS URL. YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default; reveal and copy the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the secure extension to RTMP. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions explain how to find it.
FFmpeg describes RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection. Keep the URL and key separate in your configuration where practical, and avoid printing secrets in logs.

Choose how FFmpeg handles the media
There is no universal FFmpeg command that fits every file and host. The right output depends on the media’s audio and video streams, the target format, and the codecs and encoders available in your FFmpeg build.
Stream copy or re-encode?
- Stream copy: avoids decoding and re-encoding, but works only when the input streams and container/output requirements are compatible with YouTube’s ingest expectations.
- Decode, filter, and re-encode: gives you control over resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and other output properties, but uses host resources and requires settings suited to both the source and your upload capacity.
Inspect the source and test the exact FFmpeg command with your chosen media before relying on it. Confirm that the installed build supports the options you plan to use; encoder availability varies by build.
Match output settings to YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS; frame rates up to 60 fps; CBR bitrate encoding; and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not over 4 seconds. Its published bitrate ranges vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Examples from YouTube’s table are:

| 720p at 30 fps | H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s technical recommendations, not performance guarantees. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table for the full ranges and verify that your FFmpeg build can encode the selected codec. Choose settings the source can actually provide and the host’s sustained upload can support.
Run FFmpeg as the Docker container’s main process
Make FFmpeg the container’s foreground process rather than starting it in the background and letting the container exit. Docker can then observe FFmpeg’s exit status and apply the configured restart policy. A host-side bind mount is one way to expose a local media file to the container.
In the container definition, arrange for the container’s main command to invoke your tested FFmpeg command with the media input and YouTube RTMPS output. Supply the stream key without publishing it. The exact command and options depend on your input, output codec, FFmpeg build, and secret-handling setup, so do not copy a generic command as if it were safe for every stream.

Configure Docker to restart the container
Docker provides four restart policy choices. Pick one based on what should happen after an exit and whether an intentional manual stop should remain stopped.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Policy | Behavior | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
no |
No automatic restart. | When you want to manage restarts yourself. |
on-failure[:max-retries] |
Restarts after a non-zero exit; an optional retry limit can cap attempts. | When the process should be relaunched only after an error exit. |
always |
Restarts the container after it exits, and Docker starts it again when the daemon starts. | When the container should generally be brought back automatically, including after a daemon restart. |
unless-stopped |
Like always, except a container manually stopped remains stopped when the Docker daemon restarts. |
When you want automatic recovery but want a deliberate manual stop to persist. |
These policies control container restart behavior; they do not validate media or correct the reason FFmpeg exited. Read Docker’s explanation of restart policies and automatic container startup before selecting a policy for your service.
Apply policy changes with Compose
For a Compose service, set its restart policy in the service definition and use the appropriate Compose operation to apply the configuration change. Running docker compose restart merely restarts services; it does not apply edits made to the Compose file. See Docker’s Compose restart command reference for that distinction.

Docker restart policy vs. FFmpeg output recovery
These mechanisms operate at different failure layers. Docker can relaunch a container after it exits. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer has options for attempting to recover output after a failure while FFmpeg is still running. Neither makes every failure recoverable, and neither guarantees an uninterrupted stream.
| Mechanism | What triggers it | What it can do | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Docker restart policy | A container exits under conditions covered by its selected policy, or Docker restarts. | Start the container—and its foreground FFmpeg process—again. | Fix invalid credentials, unreadable or incompatible media, a broken command, or a persistent network problem. |
| FFmpeg FIFO output recovery | An output failure that the configured FIFO muxer recovery options can handle. | Attempt to recover output within the running FFmpeg process. Relevant options include attempt_recovery and recovery_wait_time. |
Guarantee recovery from permanent errors or replace Docker’s container restart policy. Overflow handling may drop packets if configured to do so. |
FFmpeg’s documentation includes an RTMP FIFO example with recovery options and discusses packet-overflow settings. Treat it as an example, not a ready-made configuration for every input, RTMPS endpoint, or failure mode. Check the FFmpeg protocols documentation and FFmpeg documentation, then test the chosen options with your actual stream.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Test the stream and monitor it
- Start the container and confirm that FFmpeg can read the intended input and connect to YouTube.
- Check container and FFmpeg logs for input errors, encoder failures, rejected credentials, or output disconnects. A container that repeatedly restarts may conceal an unresolved problem if you do not inspect the logs.
- Verify that YouTube receives the feed, and monitor its stream health and messages in Live Control Room.
- Test with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream. YouTube recommends testing a representative feed rather than relying only on a static or incomplete check.
- Confirm that the stream remains healthy long enough to expose issues with the real media, output settings, and sustained upload capacity.
Troubleshoot common restart and streaming failures
- The container exits and does not return: check whether the selected restart policy covers the exit. With
on-failure, a clean exit is not treated like a non-zero failure. Inspect container status and logs rather than assuming the policy will relaunch every stop. - The container keeps restarting: read FFmpeg’s error output. A restart loop can repeatedly relaunch a bad command, missing file, unsupported codec, or invalid key; Docker does not repair any of them.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: confirm that you copied the RTMPS URL and the correct stream key from Live Control Room, and that the key has not been exposed or changed.
- FFmpeg cannot open the input: check the path as seen inside the container, not just on the host. Verify the bind mount and file permissions if the media is stored on the host.
- The stream drops but FFmpeg remains running: Docker may have no container exit to act on. Consider whether FFmpeg FIFO output recovery is appropriate for the failure, and inspect the FFmpeg and YouTube health messages.
- The stream is unstable or YouTube reports problems: compare the actual codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate with YouTube’s guidance; also check that the host’s connection can sustain the selected output.
- A Compose policy edit appears ineffective:
docker compose restartdoes not apply Compose configuration changes. Apply the updated service configuration with the appropriate Compose operation.
Cost and hosting considerations
Docker and FFmpeg are software; the cost of this setup depends on where it runs and how you source the media. If you use an existing always-on machine, there may be no new hosting charge, but it must remain powered and connected. A VPS is an optional way to keep the container on an always-available host; it cannot fix invalid media, credentials, or network conditions. No particular VPS provider or suitable plan is established here.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a prerecorded YouTube stream that keeps running without a Docker host to maintain, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera or to other platforms.
