Choose video settings your measured upload speed can sustain, check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and plan separately for interruptions and archiving: a stream that runs beyond 12 hours may not be captured as a replay.
Before you set up the PC
Check channel eligibility first. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; its general eligibility guidance also sets a minimum age of 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

- Have access to YouTube Studio and the channel you intend to stream from.
- Measure the PC’s upload speed under conditions similar to the planned stream. A shared connection can leave less bandwidth available than a speed test suggests.
- Decide whether the priority is uninterrupted live viewing, retaining a complete replay, or both. YouTube’s archive behavior makes this distinction important for very long sessions.
Choose a sustainable resolution and bitrate
Use the YouTube encoder recommendations as a starting point, not a guarantee that your particular connection can sustain the stream. YouTube recommends keeping upload capacity about 20% above the total stream bitrate and notes that other devices sharing the network can affect available bandwidth. Its streaming tips explain the headroom guidance.
| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 9 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps |
For example, YouTube’s 6 Mbps recommendation for 1080p30 implies at least 7.2 Mbps of upload capacity when applying its 20% headroom recommendation, before allowing for variability or other network use. A steadier lower setting is preferable to a higher setting that repeatedly drops frames. YouTube’s full encoder settings and bitrate recommendations include other formats and guidance.

Encoder settings to check
- Protocol: Choose RTMPS when your encoder offers it. YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS ingestion; see Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Rate control: Use CBR for RTMP/RTMPS, as YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends.
- Keyframe interval: Set 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Resolution and frame rate: Match the content and the upload connection. The values in the table are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, not requirements for every stream.
Set up the stream in YouTube Studio and OBS
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a live stream or schedule one. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover creating a stream with an encoder.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. In the stream settings, copy both values to the encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMP/RTMPS fields. Treat the key as a password: anyone with it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed. See Manage live stream settings.
- Configure OBS or another encoder. Select YouTube/RTMPS if available, or enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Set the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR and keyframe interval based on the guidance above.
- Start sending the encoder feed. Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview, and review any stream-health messages before starting the public broadcast.
- Go live and monitor it. Start the broadcast in YouTube Studio if the event is configured for that workflow. Check video, audio and network health during the session. YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips recommend checking the preview and monitoring stream quality.
Keep the stream key private even when troubleshooting: avoid posting screenshots or logs that reveal it. OBS is one software encoder option; YouTube’s general settings guidance applies to ordinary SDR streams, so HDR-specific configuration is not necessary unless you are intentionally producing HDR.
Keep a long-running stream reliable
A Windows-PC setup depends on the encoder, computer, local power and internet connection continuing to work. If any of these stops, the feed can be interrupted. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not promise automatic recovery from Windows sleep, power loss or a local internet outage, so test the complete setup before relying on it for a long session.

- Model: Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor (SFF)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
- Use the upload headroom described above, and check stream health rather than assuming a successful speed test guarantees a stable broadcast.
- Reduce competing network use if stream health shows bandwidth problems. YouTube notes that a shared network can reduce the bandwidth available to the streaming computer; Ethernet can be a useful troubleshooting option, but YouTube does not require it.
- If you have a backup encoder, test switching to it before you need it. YouTube recommends testing failover where a backup encoder is part of the setup.
- Account for local power and network interruptions without assuming a particular Indian ISP, outage rate, data cost or backup-power requirement; those depend on your location and connection.
Plan for the replay as well as the live broadcast
YouTube says a live stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends making a local recording if you need a backup. See Archive live streams. For a replay you need to preserve, record locally and consider ending and restarting the stream before it reaches 12 hours; a local recording is the more dependable copy if the YouTube archive is missing.

Rewind is a separate issue from whether an archive is captured. YouTube says DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, with lower limits on some devices and older app versions. Check Turn on DVR on live streams if viewers need to rewind while the broadcast is running.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the stream is made from uploaded videos rather than a live camera, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video from the cloud, so your Windows PC and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera encoder. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
