For a prerecorded program streamed continuously to YouTube, configure the outgoing live feed for H.264 video, AAC audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. Choose the video bitrate for the feed’s actual resolution and frame rate, use RTMPS when your encoder supports it, and test the full setup before leaving it unattended. The source video file has its own preparation settings; those do not replace YouTube’s live-ingest requirements.
Set the live encoder for YouTube
In your encoder’s output or streaming settings, use YouTube’s current live-ingest guidance. Menu labels vary by encoder, but the values to look for are:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Video codec: H.264.
- Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Audio codec: AAC. For stereo, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps audio bitrate.
- Connection: RTMPS, if supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection.
These are YouTube live encoder recommendations, not results from an independent performance test. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and supported live streaming protocols.
Choose a bitrate for the exact resolution and frame rate
Use YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you are actually sending. The figures below are the minimum followed by the recommended live-ingest bitrate, as listed in YouTube’s current guidance observed on October 3, 2026. They are platform recommendations, not measurements of a particular encoder or network.

| Live resolution and frame rate | Minimum H.264 bitrate | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 360p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 7 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p60 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
For example, a 1080p30 feed calls for 14 Mbps recommended video bitrate; a 1080p60 feed calls for 17 Mbps. Do not select the 60 fps figure just because the source file has a high frame rate: set the encoder’s output frame rate to the stream you intend to send, then use the corresponding row.
Keep source-file settings separate from live output
A prerecorded file and the live feed made by playing that file into an encoder are different parts of the workflow. YouTube’s separate upload guidance lists MP4, H.264, AAC-LC, 48 kHz audio, progressive scan, and a closed GOP among its supported or recommended choices for uploaded files. Those file-preparation recommendations do not replace the live-ingest bitrate, audio, or keyframe guidance above. Check YouTube’s upload encoding settings when preparing the source file.
Set up the stream key and connection
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream. Get the stream URL and stream key there.
- Choose RTMPS in the encoder if it offers that protocol, then enter the URL and key from Live Control Room in the matching server and key fields. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the encrypted connection.
- Protect the key like a password. Do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder with the replacement.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview in Live Control Room before making the stream public or relying on it continuously.
YouTube’s protocol guidance covers RTMPS; its encoder setup guidance explains where stream URL and key fit into the workflow.

Plan for continuous operation
YouTube does not specify an uptime guarantee for an unattended 24/7 setup in the cited guidance. Continuous operation therefore depends on the encoder, power, network, and source playlist as well as the recommended stream settings. YouTube recommends that outbound bandwidth support the total stream bitrate with a 20% margin. For example, a video feed at 14 Mbps needs at least 16.8 Mbps of available outbound capacity after applying that margin; include audio and any other concurrent uploads when judging whether the connection has enough room.
Before depending on a continuous broadcast, use YouTube’s streaming tips to test ahead of time, check the Live Control Room preview, test backup-encoder failover, verify local archive files, and confirm the event is accessible. For a prerecorded loop, also confirm the playlist can advance or restart as intended and decide who will respond if the source, encoder, network, or power fails. Monitoring and an interruption plan are operational precautions inferred from YouTube’s testing and monitoring advice, not a YouTube 24/7 uptime specification.
Choose where the encoding runs
Software encoder on a computer
A computer can play the prerecorded program and encode the live feed. It must remain powered, connected, and able to sustain the selected output settings. This route gives you direct control of the encoder, but your stream is exposed to local power, computer, network, and software interruptions.

Standalone hardware encoder
A hardware encoder is another option, especially for higher-production-value streams. YouTube says such streams may benefit from professional-grade hardware encoders; it does not require one. Compare candidates by sustained output reliability, RTMPS support, the resolution and frame rate you need, recovery after power or network interruption, monitoring and failover, and operating cost. YouTube’s guidance does not establish that hardware alone guarantees uninterrupted operation.

YouTube’s encoder setup page also surfaces Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded YouTube streams. That establishes relevance to this use case, but not current pricing, plan limits, reliability, or an endorsement. Check the provider’s current terms directly before choosing it.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It supports the video quality you upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Troubleshoot common stream problems
YouTube preview shows an unstable or missing stream
Check that the encoder is using the correct stream URL and current key, that the connection is RTMPS if available, and that outbound capacity can carry the total bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% margin. Confirm no other upload is consuming the needed headroom.
The image is soft, stutters, or drops frames
Verify the encoder’s actual output resolution and frame rate, then use the matching recommended bitrate from the table. Check for insufficient or fluctuating upload capacity and reduce the output resolution or frame rate if the connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate.

The stream does not meet YouTube’s keyframe guidance
Set the keyframe interval to two seconds and confirm the encoder applies it to the outgoing live feed. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.

Audio is silent, distorted, or out of sync
Confirm the live output uses AAC and that the audio source is routed into the encoder. For stereo, use YouTube’s recommended 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps bitrate. Test the result in the Live Control Room preview rather than assuming the source file’s audio settings carry through unchanged.
The stream stops when nobody is at the computer
A local software encoder depends on the computer, power, and network remaining available. Test backup-encoder failover and have a plan for restoring the source playlist and stream after an interruption; YouTube’s recommendations do not promise automatic recovery for every setup.
The encoder rejects the stream key
Copy the current key and URL from Live Control Room, check for accidental whitespace or an outdated key, and replace the encoder values if you reset the key after exposure.

Check copyright and channel eligibility before looping
Technical compliance does not grant permission to broadcast a recording. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules and channel requirements before scheduling a continuous program. A stream that can be encoded correctly can still be restricted for rights or policy reasons.
