How to Run AI Models on AMD GPUs with ROCm

A practical guide to checking AMD GPU and ROCm compatibility, choosing the right release-specific installation path, and verifying PyTorch sees the GPU.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To run AI models on an AMD GPU, first confirm that your exact GPU, operating system, driver, ROCm release, and framework version are a supported combination. ROCm is a coordinated software stack: installing it—or owning an AMD GPU—does not by itself guarantee that PyTorch or a particular model will use the GPU.

For the ROCm 10.0.0 path, start with AMD’s ROCm compatibility matrix (dated August 25, 2026; checked October 4, 2026). If you are using AMD’s separate Radeon/Ryzen guide, note that it documents through ROCm 7.2.1 and has its own device and platform requirements. Do not mix instructions across those release paths.

Check whether your AMD GPU and software combination is supported

Before installing anything, write down the complete GPU or APU model, operating system and version, and whether you plan to use Linux or Windows. Then check the matching AMD documentation for all of these together:

  • Exact GPU model and architecture
  • Operating system and version
  • Required driver and ROCm release
  • Framework version and supported Python version
  • Your target application or inference engine

AMD’s ROCm 10.0.0 compatibility matrix, dated August 25, 2026, covers Linux and Windows and lists ecosystem components including PyTorch, JAX, vLLM, SGLang, TensorFlow, MIGraphX, and ONNX Runtime. Its support entries are specific version combinations, not a promise that every listed framework works on every listed device and operating system. For example, AMD lists the Radeon RX 9070 XT in ROCm support documentation; that makes it an example to check in the matrix, not a guarantee that every workload will run on it.

ASUS Dual Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB GDDR6 Gaming Graphics Card | PCIe 5.0, HDMI 2.1b, DisplayPort 2.1a, 2.5-slot design, Axial-tech Fans, 0dB Technology
  • Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
  • 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
  • Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
  • Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs

AMD’s Linux system-requirements documentation states: “If your GPU is not listed on this table, it’s not officially supported by AMD.” AMD also cautions that HIP may run on an unsupported GPU while prebuilt ROCm libraries remain unsupported and may produce runtime errors. Treat unofficial workarounds as experimental, not as equivalent to a supported setup.

Choose one ROCm documentation path

Path When to use it Important qualification
ROCm 10.0.0 compatibility path Use AMD’s current compatibility matrix to select a supported Linux or Windows configuration for the exact device, framework, driver, and Python version. The matrix is configuration-specific. Follow its matching install instructions and framework versions rather than assuming one ROCm installation works across all combinations.
Radeon/Ryzen guide through ROCm 7.2.1 Use this separately versioned guide when its documented Radeon or Ryzen device and platform match your setup. It documents support for Radeon 9000 and select 7000 series GPUs and select Ryzen APUs. Its instructions are not interchangeable with the ROCm 10.0.0 path.

AMD documents several installation methods, including Linux package-manager installation, amdgpu-install for Radeon and Ryzen on Linux, pip installation for Python and machine-learning workflows on Linux and Windows, tarballs, and a Linux runfile installer. Choose the method AMD documents for your selected operating system and device. For Python-focused work, use the matching PyTorch guide and its AMD-hosted ROCm wheel index; wheel commands and variants depend on the operating system and GPU architecture, so use the live guide rather than copying commands from a different release page.

Install ROCm and PyTorch for the selected configuration

  1. Open AMD’s install documentation for the chosen release and platform. Confirm that the device, OS version, and driver in the instructions match the compatibility entry you selected.
  2. Follow the documented installation method for that configuration. If using a Python workflow, create and activate a virtual environment as described in AMD’s PyTorch guide, then install the ROCm-enabled PyTorch packages from the wheel index specified there. Do not substitute a wheel or command from another ROCm release.
  3. Install the AI application separately. After PyTorch is working, follow the chosen model or inference engine’s own AMD/ROCm instructions. Framework support does not establish support for every model, quantization format, custom kernel, or application workflow.

For Windows, check the specific Windows 11 device and framework entries before proceeding. AMD’s Radeon/Ryzen documentation describes a narrower Windows route that includes supported PyTorch configurations and says the entire ROCm stack is not yet supported on Windows. Do not read a cross-platform matrix listing as proof that all ROCm components are available on Windows.

Verify that PyTorch detects the AMD GPU

Run these checks in the same Python environment where you installed the ROCm-enabled PyTorch packages:

  1. Check availability: python -c "import torch; print(torch.cuda.is_available())". AMD’s guide expects True when the installation is working correctly.
  2. Print the detected device: python -c "import torch; print(torch.cuda.get_device_name(0))". Confirm that the reported device is the GPU you intend to use.
  3. Collect environment details if detection fails: python -m torch.utils.collect_env. Use the resulting configuration information when comparing your installation with AMD’s supported versions.

PyTorch uses the torch.cuda API for this availability check even when running on AMD through ROCm; the command shown is AMD’s documented verification method.

If the GPU is not detected

  • Recheck the full version pairing. Compare the installed ROCm and driver releases, OS version, GPU model, PyTorch build, and Python version against the same compatibility entry. A mismatch in any one of these can invalidate the setup.
  • Make sure you are testing the installed environment. Run the commands from the virtual environment in which the ROCm-enabled PyTorch packages were installed.
  • Do not infer official support from partial runtime behavior. HIP running on an unlisted GPU does not make AMD’s prebuilt ROCm libraries officially supported; AMD warns that runtime errors can result.
  • Use the application’s own compatibility guidance after PyTorch passes. GPU visibility in PyTorch does not prove that a model package, quantization, kernel, or inference engine supports your configuration.
