Connect the player’s yellow video output to the TV’s composite video input, then connect white audio to left and red audio to right. Turn on both devices and select the TV input you used. If the TV has no composite input, use a powered converter that takes composite AV in and sends HDMI out.
Check the ports before connecting
On the VCR or DVD player, look for output jacks labeled VIDEO OUT and AUDIO OUT. On the TV, look for matching VIDEO IN and AUDIO IN jacks, or a composite/AV input. The player’s outputs must connect to the TV’s inputs; do not connect output to output. Port layouts vary, so check the TV’s manual if its labels are unclear.

RCA refers to the plug style. In the common composite arrangement, yellow carries video, while white and red carry left and right audio. A mono VCR may have a different audio arrangement; follow the labels on the devices or their manuals rather than assuming a stereo connection.

Connect directly when the TV has composite AV input
- With the devices off, plug the player’s yellow VIDEO OUT into the TV’s composite video input.
- Connect white audio to the left audio input and red audio to the right audio input. Match the player’s output jacks to the TV’s input jacks by color and label.
- Turn on the TV and player. Use the TV remote’s Input, Source, or AV control to select the input you used, then start playback.

Use a composite-to-HDMI converter if the TV lacks RCA inputs
If the TV has HDMI but no composite AV input, connect the player’s RCA outputs to the converter’s composite/RCA inputs, then connect the converter’s HDMI output to an available HDMI input on the TV. Follow the converter’s power instructions; some require a separate power connection.
- Check that the device is specifically labeled to convert composite AV to HDMI. Direction matters: the RCA player is the source, and the HDMI TV is the display.
- Connect yellow video and the audio plugs from the player to the converter’s matching composite inputs.
- Connect the converter’s HDMI output to the TV, and supply power as its instructions require.
- Turn on the player and TV, select the HDMI input used, and start playback.
Element’s guidance also stresses checking conversion direction and device compatibility for an RCA source connected to an HDMI-only TV: Element RCA and AV-to-HDMI guidance. A converter changes the connection format; it cannot recreate picture detail missing from the original recording or disc. The available guidance does not establish a universal resolution or picture-quality result for every converter and TV combination.

Choose the connection that matches your equipment

For example, Philips says the specific DVD/VCR combo models covered in its support article use S-Video or component for DVD output, while VCR playback requires composite. That is model-specific guidance, not a rule for every combo unit: Philips DVD/VCR connection instructions.

Troubleshoot a blank screen or missing sound
- Blank screen: Confirm that the TV is on the AV input or HDMI input actually used. Selecting the wrong source can look like a failed connection.
- No picture through a converter: Recheck that the player is connected to the converter’s AV input and the converter’s HDMI output goes to the TV. Confirm converter power and select the matching HDMI input.
- No sound or audio on one side: Check that the plugs are fully seated and that white and red go to the corresponding audio jacks. For mono equipment, use the device labels or manual.
- DVD works but VCR does not: A combo unit may route DVD playback through S-Video or component while requiring composite for VHS playback. Verify the exact model’s connection guidance.
- Unclear TV ports: Some TVs combine composite video with another jack or require a supplied breakout adapter. Check the exact model’s manual before buying a cable or converter.
