To run a YouTube radio stream in Docker, make your media available inside a container, use FFmpeg to encode and send it to the broadcast’s current YouTube ingest details, then monitor both FFmpeg and YouTube’s stream health. Docker packages the process and its dependencies; it does not provide media or guarantee an uninterrupted stream.
How the stream gets from your media to YouTube
The basic signal path is:
Source media → FFmpeg in Docker → encoded audio/video stream → YouTube Live ingest

Your source might be one prerecorded file, a playlist, a network stream, or live audio. FFmpeg reads that input, encodes and packages it in a format YouTube accepts, and sends it to the ingest endpoint for your broadcast. A radio-style stream still needs a suitable visual track if the production is audio-only; a still image or looped artwork is one possible implementation choice.
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, use the ingest address and stream key shown for the particular broadcast. Depending on how the details are presented, the server URL and stream name/key may be separate values that must be combined as instructed. Do not treat an example endpoint as permanent: YouTube’s current broadcast details are authoritative. Never publish a real key, put it in a Dockerfile, or commit it to a repository.

Choose an input and prepare the container
Match FFmpeg’s input options to the source
- One file: Make the file accessible in the container. For continuous playback, configure looping and real-time pacing for that input.
- Playlist: Decide how files are ordered and how transitions should behave. The playlist format and FFmpeg options depend on the media and desired transition behavior.
- Network stream or live audio: Use the source’s actual protocol and authentication requirements. A prerecorded-file loop is not a substitute for reconnect logic on a live or network source.
FFmpeg options are sensitive to input type and order. The command below is a shape for an illustrative single-file setup, not a verified, universal command. Check the installed FFmpeg build, source streams, and current YouTube settings before adapting it:
docker run --rm
--mount type=bind,src=/path/to/media,dst=/media,readonly
--env-file /secure/path/stream.env
YOUR_FFMPEG_IMAGE
-re -stream_loop -1 -i /media/radio.mp4
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30
-b:v YOUR_VIDEO_BITRATE -maxrate YOUR_VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize YOUR_VIDEO_BUFFER
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "${YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL}/${YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY}"
Replace every illustrative value and placeholder. This example assumes the selected image contains FFmpeg and the required encoder, the file has the mapped video and audio streams, and the environment variables are available to the process. It does not establish a particular image, deployment configuration, or bitrate as suitable for every stream. For audio-only source media, provide an intentional visual input and map it with the audio; do not assume YouTube will accept an audio-only output for the chosen setup.

Keep media and credentials out of the image
- Use an FFmpeg image or build one that includes the codecs, fonts, and assets your production needs. Verify the image and encoder support rather than assuming they are present.
- Mount media read-only when practical, as in the illustrative command. Keep working directories and paths consistent with the container.
- Supply credentials at runtime using a secret mechanism supported by your deployment environment. An environment file is shown only to illustrate separation from the image; protect it, restrict access, and do not check it into source control.
- Avoid putting a key directly in a shell command that may be saved in shell history or exposed in process listings. The safest injection method depends on the host and deployment platform.
Set FFmpeg output for YouTube Live
YouTube Help’s encoder guidance, checked October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant-bitrate encoding; and support for up to 60 fps. It recommends a keyframe every two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, it recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee of quality or a replacement for testing. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together
Choose a video bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to use. Do not copy one bitrate to every stream: the table is specific to those settings, and the available upload bandwidth must also support the sustained output. A higher target cannot compensate for an unstable or insufficient uplink.

In the example, -r 30 sets 30 fps, while -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 represent a 60-frame keyframe interval at that frame rate—two seconds. If you change frame rate, calculate the GOP/keyframe interval accordingly. Use a pixel format accepted by the selected codec and workflow; yuv420p is an illustrative choice, not a universal requirement.
Use the right muxing and ingest format
For an ordinary low-latency YouTube Live workflow, RTMPS is the recommended starting point. YouTube states: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Its RTMPS documentation requires a valid endpoint and application path and uses port 443. Follow the current broadcast-specific values and instructions in Live Control Room, and consult Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide for the URL structure.

The example uses an FLV output container because it illustrates a common RTMP-family workflow; confirm that the selected ingest method and FFmpeg build support the specific combination you use. HLS and DASH are not interchangeable URL variations for this command: they have different packaging and endpoint requirements.
Start safely, test, and monitor the stream
- Set up a private or unlisted test broadcast. Create or select the broadcast in YouTube Studio, then obtain its current ingest details and provide the key to the container at runtime.
- Start the container and inspect its output. Watch for missing-file errors, unmapped streams, unavailable encoders, authentication failures, and connection errors. Keep logs accessible without exposing the stream key.
- Check YouTube’s preview and stream health. Confirm that the expected image appears and that audio is present, intelligible, and not clipping. Verify that the stream is being received and that the health indicators do not report problems.
- Test representative content. YouTube advises testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the actual stream. Let the test run long enough to reveal source files that end unexpectedly, playlist gaps, or unstable connections.
- Plan supervision before unattended operation. Decide who or what will notice a stopped process, failed source, or unhealthy ingest, and how it will be restarted or investigated. A Docker restart policy can restart an exited process; it cannot repair invalid media, a wrong key, inadequate upstream bandwidth, or rights problems.
RTMPS, HLS, and DASH: when to consider another protocol
YouTube documents RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingestion. RTMPS is the straightforward recommendation for ordinary content where low latency matters. HLS uses HTTPS and media playlists with muxed audio/video and sequence/file rules; YouTube notes its segment-based approach usually has higher latency than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingestion. DASH and HLS require workflows built for their packaging and endpoint requirements, rather than the RTMP/FLV command above. Compare the current protocol requirements in YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison and HLS ingestion documentation.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check the current server URL, application path, and stream key in Live Control Room, then inspect FFmpeg’s connection and authentication errors. Do not reuse a stale endpoint or expose the key while debugging.
- The container exits immediately: Confirm the image has FFmpeg and the requested encoders, the mounted path exists inside the container, and the command maps streams that the source actually contains.
- The preview has no picture or sound: Check input stream mapping and codec output. An audio-only production needs an intentional visual track for the chosen output; verify both tracks in YouTube’s preview.
- The stream buffers or health degrades: Compare the chosen output bitrate with the host’s sustained upload capacity and check the host’s network stability. Reducing resolution or bitrate may help if it remains within YouTube’s guidance for the selected settings.
- Playback stops at the end of a file: Confirm that looping is configured for the correct input and that the intended source is actually continuous. Playlist and live-source recovery behavior needs its own handling.
- A restart does not restore the broadcast: A restart policy only reacts to process exit. Check whether FFmpeg is still running but disconnected, whether the key or media is invalid, and whether the host can reach the ingest endpoint.
- YouTube reports a rights or policy issue: Confirm that you have the necessary rights to every audio and visual element and review YouTube’s applicable rules. Encoding and Docker configuration do not grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted material.
