For a stream that must keep running while the Mac is off, a cloud service such as StreamNeo is an alternative; the Mac mini method below requires the computer, network, and encoder to remain running.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified, has no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and has live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned start. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the prerequisites.
- A Mac mini running macOS 13 or newer for the current OBS Studio download. OBS provides separate installers for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs; check your Mac’s processor and choose the matching installer. Older OBS releases may support different macOS versions. OBS Studio download
- A stable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for the selected video bitrate, plus OBS Studio and a YouTube Live event.
- Music and other audio you have the rights to broadcast live and, if you plan to keep a replay, archive. A still image or simple visualizer can accompany the audio.
The exact Mac mini generation, audio source, macOS configuration, and internet plan determine what settings and routing will work. A compatible Mac is not a guarantee that every combination of resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene will stream well, so test your actual setup.

Set up the Mac mini and OBS
1. Install OBS Studio
- Open the OBS Studio download page, select macOS, and choose the installer for your Mac’s processor.
- Open the downloaded disk image and move OBS into Applications, following the OBS Mac installation guide.
- Launch OBS and run its Auto-Configuration Wizard. Treat its result as a starting point, not proof of reliable performance; test the intended scene and settings.
2. Create the YouTube livestream
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a livestream using the encoder workflow. Scheduling creates a watch page viewers can find in advance.
- Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key from YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the connection details. If OBS presents a server field, use the stream URL YouTube provides.
- Keep the stream key private: it is a credential that lets an encoder send to your channel. Do not show it in a public screenshot or in your broadcast.
- Start the stream from OBS and wait for the encoder preview to appear in Live Control Room. The feed is not ready for viewers until YouTube receives it; use YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before going live. Follow the current YouTube encoder instructions for the Live Control Room flow.
3. Build a simple radio scene and confirm audio
Add a still image, title card, or visualizer as the scene’s visual, then add the audio source that matches how your program is produced. Watch the OBS audio mixer while the source plays: its meters should move. Confirm the sound in the YouTube preview as well. If your audio comes from another application on the Mac, you may need an audio-routing solution, but the correct method depends on that application and your macOS setup; verify routing on your specific Mac rather than assuming one universal system-audio setting.
Choose YouTube-compatible stream settings
For a straightforward radio stream, use RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube says the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS; available choices depend on the encoder and setup. AAC or MP3 are listed audio codecs for RTMP(S), and YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for resolution- and frame-rate-specific bitrate ranges.

- Resolution and frame rate: Choose a modest setting that suits the visual and your sustained upload capacity. A static radio image does not need a high frame rate, and raising resolution or bitrate does not automatically improve a long-running broadcast.
- Bitrate: Keep the selected video bitrate within what the connection can sustain, with room for normal network variation. YouTube recommends running an upload speed test; a brief peak is not the same as reliable capacity over a long session.
- Transport: Prefer RTMPS for encrypted delivery. HLS is a specialized alternative for particular codec or HDR workflows and has higher latency; it adds complexity without a clear benefit for a basic radio stream.
Use OBS’s output and video settings to apply the choices available in your installed version. Since the Mac mini model and OBS version are unspecified, there is no single hardware encoder or resolution preset that can be promised to work for every setup.
Test and monitor the broadcast
- Run a private or otherwise low-risk test with audio and motion similar to the planned show. Confirm both the picture and sound in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview.
- Check YouTube stream health and OBS output status. If the preview buffers or health degrades, lower the bitrate or resolution and test again rather than assuming the Mac is at fault.
- Verify the watch page opens where expected, including on a phone, before promoting a scheduled event.
- For any unattended period, periodically verify the audio, image, network connection, encoder output, and local recording. An OBS scene that appears active does not by itself prove the audience is receiving usable audio.
A wired Ethernet connection may be useful for a stationary Mac mini if the computer and network equipment support it, but it is not a guaranteed fix or a universal requirement for live upload. Check the exact Mac mini’s Ethernet port or adapter needs and test the actual connection. The key requirement is a connection that can sustain the chosen bitrate.

Plan music rights and YouTube archives
Use music cleared for the actual broadcast
Make sure the rights cover a live YouTube broadcast and any replay you intend to leave available. YouTube warns that a livestream can be terminated after a copyright strike, and a completed archived stream can receive a Content ID claim. Keep license records and check each track’s territory, attribution requirements, and live and replay permissions. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Do not depend on YouTube to archive a stream over 12 hours
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. For a 24/7 station, plan session rotation below that boundary and independent local recording, then test how the breaks and resulting archives appear to viewers. Common problems and fixes
- Live streaming is unavailable: Check channel verification and restrictions in the previous 90 days. If this is the first stream, enable livestreaming early; activation may take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube receives no encoder preview: Check that OBS is streaming, the correct event’s stream URL and key are in use, and the key has not been changed. Do not share the key publicly.
- Stream health is poor or the picture buffers: Test sustained upload capacity and reduce the video bitrate or resolution until the stream is stable. Recheck with the actual scene and audio running.
- The YouTube preview is silent: Confirm the intended source is present in the OBS scene, its mixer meter moves, and it is not muted. If audio comes from another Mac application, check the specific routing setup.
- The stream stops or the archive is missing: Inspect the encoder and network status, and restart the feed if needed. Do not assume a stream exceeding 12 hours will be archived; use session rotation and a local recording when continuity and preservation matter.
- A music stream is interrupted or claimed: Review the rights for the exact track, territory, live broadcast, and replay. A platform tool or track license should not be treated as blanket permission for a continuous station.
Costs and operating trade-offs
OBS Studio is free to download. The DIY approach avoids a streaming-service subscription, but it requires the Mac mini, internet connection, and OBS to keep operating, as well as attention to monitoring, reconnects, local recording, and session rotation. No specific Mac mini performance, power cost, or internet price can be established without your model and service details. YouTube’s own encoder guidance, rather than the computer’s product name, should drive bitrate choices.
