To loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from Ubuntu, use OBS Studio: add the video as a Media Source, enable Loop, connect OBS to an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, then check the preview before clicking Go live. The steps are the same for viewers and creators in India; the cited YouTube and OBS instructions establish no special India-only setup.
What you need before you start
- A local video file and permission to broadcast both its picture and audio.
- OBS Studio installed on an Ubuntu version supported by the installation instructions you follow.
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days (YouTube Live streaming eligibility).
- A stable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for your chosen stream quality.
You do not need a camera, capture card, or other physical product for this prerecorded-file workflow.

Install OBS Studio on Ubuntu
First check your Ubuntu release. OBS’s current Ubuntu PPA instructions apply to Ubuntu 24.04 and newer; its Linux installation article covers older Ubuntu versions. Follow the instructions for your release on the OBS download page rather than assuming the current PPA applies to every version.

sudo apt install obs-studioAfter installation, launch OBS Studio and complete its initial setup. OBS describes the software as free and open-source, and its Linux Media Source supports common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM (OBS Media Sources).
Add the video and make it loop
- In OBS, create or select a scene for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add Media Source.
- In the source properties, select the local video file. Enable Loop.
- Check the OBS preview. Confirm the video is framed as intended and that its audio is audible. If it is not, inspect the source selection and OBS audio mixer before continuing.
Looping makes the Media Source play again after the file ends; it does not itself connect OBS to YouTube or make the stream public. Test the end-to-start transition and confirm both picture and audio continue as expected before relying on a long broadcast.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live. Create an encoder stream or schedule one. If live streaming is not available, check the channel’s verification and restriction status in YouTube Studio; YouTube’s eligibility requirement is a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days (YouTube Help).
- In the stream setup, copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Enter them in OBS’s stream settings, choosing the YouTube service or the appropriate custom server fields. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup guidance if the screen labels differ (Set up your encoder for live streaming).
- Treat the stream key as a password. Do not share or publish it; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room before broadcasting again. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” (YouTube stream settings).
- Start streaming from OBS. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and check stream health. For a scheduled encoder stream, click Go live after the preview appears (Go live with an encoder).
To finish, end the broadcast in YouTube and stop sending from OBS. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that condition is not a guarantee that every longer stream will be archived (Archive live streams).
Choose settings your connection can sustain
Upload bandwidth and stream health
Set output quality according to the upload bandwidth you can sustain, not just the video file’s resolution. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% of available upload bandwidth unused as headroom, and notes that other users or devices on a shared connection can reduce what is available to your stream (YouTube encoder settings and stream health). Test the connection and watch Live Control Room’s stream-health indicators; a speed test at one moment cannot ensure a shared or variable connection will remain stable.

Protocol and latency
For a typical H.264 prerecorded loop, use a YouTube-compatible RTMPS setup unless your encoder or codec gives you a specific reason to use HLS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts stream data sent to its servers. Low latency is usually less important for a prerecorded loop unless real-time interaction matters; lower latency can increase buffering. HLS is an alternative for compatible encoder output, but YouTube notes it has higher latency than RTMP and documents HLS-specific requirements, including 1–4 second TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT (YouTube encoder settings).

Use video and audio you own, have permission to broadcast, or are otherwise entitled to use. YouTube warns that audio and video rights matter in stream settings guidance (YouTube Help). Repeating a file does not create rights, prevent a copyright claim, or guarantee monetization. Live-stream ads and other monetization features depend on channel eligibility and settings; a loop alone does not qualify a channel.

The setup described here uses OBS and YouTube’s ordinary encoder workflow. The cited platform instructions do not establish a distinct India-only configuration or regional exception. Check your account’s current Live Control Room and applicable local rules rather than relying on assumptions about regional availability.
Troubleshooting common problems
