You can run a YouTube Live playlist on a Raspberry Pi by starting Chromium in kiosk mode and opening the playlist’s normal YouTube page. Turn on autoplay in that Pi browser session, then test the playlist before leaving it unattended. This makes the Pi a full-screen playback device; it does not guarantee that every live playlist will advance forever without a pause, prompt, or error.
What you need
- A Raspberry Pi running Raspberry Pi OS with its graphical desktop. Raspberry Pi’s kiosk tutorial gives a baseline of a Pi 3 or newer with at least 1 GB of RAM for a graphical browser kiosk; that is not a guarantee of smooth playback for every YouTube stream or resolution. Raspberry Pi’s kiosk-mode tutorial
- A microSD card and suitable power supply.
- A monitor or TV and the correct cable for your Pi. Pi 4 and later use micro-HDMI for display connections; check the board’s ports and your display’s input before buying a cable. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation
- Network access for YouTube playback. If you plan to operate the Pi without a keyboard and mouse, Raspberry Pi recommends configuring network access and SSH during imaging.
A Pi’s ability to output a particular display resolution does not establish that every YouTube codec or stream resolution will play smoothly. Choose hardware for your screen and local availability; the cited Raspberry Pi guidance does not provide comparative YouTube Live playback benchmarks by model.

Set up the Pi to open the playlist on startup
- Install Raspberry Pi OS with desktop. Complete initial setup and connect the Pi to your network. The graphical desktop is needed for Chromium’s browser kiosk.
- Find the playlist’s regular YouTube page. Copy the playlist URL from YouTube. For the simplest setup, use this ordinary playlist page as Chromium’s destination.
- Configure Chromium’s kiosk launch. Follow Raspberry Pi’s kiosk-mode tutorial to add Chromium to the user’s autostart configuration with the
--kioskflag. In its example, replace the sample webpage with the playlist’s normal YouTube URL. Kiosk mode opens Chromium full-screen; it does not itself enable autoplay or prevent playback errors. - Restart and check playback. Confirm that the Pi starts the desktop, opens the expected playlist, and displays video on the intended monitor. If the Pi is headless during setup, use the SSH access configured during imaging to manage it, but remember that the browser and display session still need to run for local playback.
Choose between a playlist page and an embedded player
| Approach | Setup and presentation | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Normal YouTube playlist page | Simplest: launch the playlist URL in Chromium kiosk mode. | Use the player controls in the Pi browser session to enable autoplay and check for prompts. |
| Playlist embedded in a webpage | Useful when you want a custom page or presentation; YouTube documents embedding a playlist and the autoplay=1 parameter. |
Open the webpage containing the embed, not a bare embed-player URL in the address bar. YouTube says an embedded player opened without an enclosing webpage and HTTP Referer can show error 153. See YouTube’s embed guidance. |
An embed parameter is not a substitute for testing the actual player. YouTube’s embed instructions describe autoplay for embedded-player code, while autoplay behavior and settings can vary by device.
Enable autoplay and test unattended playback
Autoplay is controlled in the YouTube player, and YouTube notes that settings can differ between devices. Enable it in the Pi’s Chromium session rather than assuming that a phone, TV, or another browser’s setting will carry over. YouTube’s autoplay help page also describes inactivity limits in mobile-network and Wi-Fi situations; it does not certify uninterrupted playback on a Raspberry Pi.

- Start the playlist and confirm that the intended live item plays.
- Check whether the next playlist item starts after the current one ends.
- Look for sign-in prompts, consent notices, buffering, or other player interruptions that would need a person to clear.
- Leave the setup running long enough to observe the transitions you expect. Plan a way to recover if playback pauses, ends, or errors.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A blank page or error 153 on an embed URL | The embedded player was opened directly rather than within an enclosing webpage, so it may lack an HTTP Referer. | Use the normal playlist page, or serve a webpage that contains the embed as described in YouTube’s embedding help. |
| The next playlist item does not start | Autoplay may be off in this device’s player session, or playback may be waiting for a prompt. | Check autoplay in the Pi browser itself and inspect the player for prompts. Device settings can differ; autoplay is not a guarantee of endless operation. YouTube autoplay help |
| Chromium does not open full-screen at boot | The kiosk launch may not be in the user autostart configuration or the command may point to the wrong page. | Recheck the Chromium kiosk configuration against Raspberry Pi’s tutorial, including the --kiosk flag and playlist URL. |
| No picture on the monitor | The cable may not match the Pi model, or the display may be on another input. | For Pi 4 and later, check the micro-HDMI connection and selected monitor input. Confirm the board’s display ports in Raspberry Pi’s documentation. |
| Video stutters or fails at a high resolution | The kiosk hardware baseline is not a YouTube playback benchmark; output resolution alone does not guarantee smooth decoding. | Test the actual stream on the actual Pi and display, and adjust expectations or the selected playback resolution if needed. |
Or let it run in the cloud
A Raspberry Pi plays YouTube in a local browser, so the Pi, display setup, and network need to remain available. If your goal is to keep an uploaded video or playlist live on a YouTube channel without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
- Your computer and home setup do not have to stay on for the stream to continue.
- Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required; one free day is available per account.
Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
