Add the logo and ticker in OBS Studio before the video reaches YouTube: put the prerecorded clip on a Media Source, layer an Image Source for the logo and a Text or Browser Source for the ticker, then apply OBS’s Scroll filter to move the text. Connect OBS to YouTube Live with the stream URL and key, check the preview, and start the scheduled broadcast from Live Control Room.

What you need

  • A prerecorded video file and a logo image. OBS Media Source supports formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM; Image Source supports PNG, JPEG/JPG, GIF, BMP and TGA. A transparent PNG is often convenient for a logo because its background can show through.
  • OBS Studio installed on a computer that can play the video and sustain the stream. OBS performs the composition and encoding, so that computer must stay running while this method is broadcasting.
  • A YouTube Live stream created or scheduled in YouTube Studio, with its server URL and stream key available.

No capture card or dedicated ticker device is required for this software workflow.

Build the video composition in OBS

  1. Create a scene. In OBS, choose an existing scene or create one for this broadcast. A scene is the composition sent to the stream; its Sources are the layers within it.
  2. Add the prerecorded video. In Sources, select + > Media Source, create or select the source, and browse to the video file. Preview it and check its audio. Media Source’s Loop option is off by default; enable it only if you want playback to repeat.
  3. Add the logo. Select + > Image, choose the logo file, and position and resize it in the preview. Keep it clear of important parts of the video.
  4. Add the ticker content. Select + > Text for straightforward text, or Browser if you want OBS to render a local or web page with a custom ticker design. Enter or configure the text, then place it where the ticker should appear.
  5. Set the source order. In the Sources list, sources above others appear in front of them. Keep the video below the logo and ticker; otherwise, the video can cover the overlays. Resize and position each source in the preview.

Make the ticker scroll

  1. Right-click the ticker source in Sources and choose Filters.
  2. Under Effect Filters, add Scroll.
  3. Set the horizontal speed and direction. A negative horizontal speed moves the source left; a positive speed moves it right.
  4. Choose whether the source should loop after it moves offscreen. The filter can also limit the source’s width and height, which helps constrain it to a ticker strip.
  5. Watch the scene preview to confirm the movement, placement and legibility at the intended output size. There is no universal text length or speed that fits every video; keep the copy concise and check that it does not obscure important content.

OBS’s Scroll filter can move a source horizontally or vertically and is explicitly intended for uses such as marquee text. Applying it to the ticker source keeps the movement separate from the underlying video.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or select the broadcast in Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream.
  2. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube as the service and enter or select the server and key as required by the current OBS interface. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.”
  3. Start streaming from OBS. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for YouTube Live Control Room to show the incoming preview before selecting Go live.
  4. Before going live, check the incoming image, ticker, logo and audio. Keep the stream key private: it provides access to the stream connection.

Check quality, audio and YouTube rules

Test before the broadcast with movement and audio similar to what you intend to stream, and monitor stream health while it is running. Choose a resolution, frame rate and bitrate that your computer and internet connection can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP, and automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats.

A logo or ticker does not grant rights to the video, music or other material in the broadcast. Use content you own or have permission to stream, and check YouTube’s copyright and live-stream requirements before broadcasting. Repeating a prerecorded video also does not make it original; a loop is a playback setting, not a substitute for rights or compliance with YouTube policies.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • Logo or ticker is hidden: Move its source above the video in the Sources list, then check its position and size in the preview.
  • Ticker does not move: Confirm that the Scroll filter is attached to the ticker source, not the video, and that its horizontal speed is not set to zero.
  • Ticker disappears and does not return: Check the filter’s looping setting. If you want the text to repeat after scrolling offscreen, enable looping.
  • Video stops after one play: Enable Loop in the Media Source properties if the clip should repeat. It is off by default.
  • YouTube receives no video: Check that OBS is streaming, that the selected stream URL and key match the intended broadcast, and that the YouTube preview has had time to appear. Do not publish or share the key.
  • Playback stutters or stream health is poor: Reduce the output demands—such as resolution, frame rate or bitrate—to what the computer and connection can sustain, and run a test before the live broadcast.
  • Audio is missing or incorrect: Check the Media Source’s playback and audio routing in OBS, then verify the incoming YouTube preview before selecting Go live.

Standalone hardware is optional

YouTube’s encoder listing describes the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone encoder with PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media to YouTube Live and built-in graphics and layout tools that include logos and lower-thirds. The cited listing does not establish that it supports a scrolling ticker, and it is not required for the OBS method above. Consider a dedicated appliance only if you specifically need a hardware-based workflow.
