To run a prerecorded video or playlist as a YouTube Live loop on Linux, use FFmpeg to read and send the media to YouTube’s ingest URL, then let systemd supervise FFmpeg as a foreground process. YouTube supplies the ingest URL and stream key; systemd can restart FFmpeg after a failure, but it cannot by itself confirm that YouTube is receiving healthy video and audio.
How the YouTube Live loop works
The setup has three parts:
- YouTube Live Control Room provides the event’s ingest URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to stream to your event. See YouTube’s live-stream setup instructions and stream settings guidance.
- FFmpeg reads a file or playlist and sends it to YouTube using a supported streaming protocol. It may copy compatible media streams or encode them into output settings you choose.
- systemd keeps FFmpeg running as a managed foreground process, records its output in the journal, and can restart it if it exits unexpectedly.
The Linux host must remain powered on and connected to the internet for the do-it-yourself stream to continue. Use a reliable upload connection and enough capacity for the stream bitrate, with headroom for network variation.

What to prepare before configuring FFmpeg
- Enable live streaming on the YouTube channel and create or schedule a live event in YouTube Studio. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s setup page; check the current instructions and account status if streaming is not yet available.
- Copy the current ingest URL and stream key from the event’s encoder settings. Keep the key out of public scripts, screenshots, command transcripts and world-readable service files. Reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Install FFmpeg and systemd on a Linux host that will be available for the duration of the event. Exact options and service directives vary by installed versions and FFmpeg build.
- Use absolute paths for media and playlist files, and make sure the account running the service can read them.
- Where practical, run the service as a dedicated low-privilege account rather than as root.
Choose a single file or a playlist
Repeat one file
A single-file loop is the simpler input case. FFmpeg provides input-level looping options, but their behavior depends on the input demuxer and installed build. Consult the manual matching your FFmpeg version before selecting an option; do not assume that a playlist directive and an input-loop option mean the same thing.

The FFmpeg concat demuxer can read a defined list of files and repeat it with its own loop option. It expects compatible inputs, and codec, stream-layout or timestamp differences can make transitions fail or behave unexpectedly. Review the FFmpeg Formats Documentation for the installed release, then test the actual files together. If they are incompatible, prepare consistent media or use another input workflow rather than assuming the playlist will play seamlessly.

Use full paths in the playlist and check file permissions from the same user account that systemd will use. A playlist that works in your login shell may still fail under the service account because of a different working directory or access rights.
Match the output to YouTube’s ingest requirements
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport where supported. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds, with a maximum of four seconds. Confirm the current requirements in YouTube’s encoder settings guide before going live.

Select a bitrate for the chosen resolution, frame rate and codec that your upload connection can sustain reliably. The YouTube Help table, checked in 2026, recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps with H.264, and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps with H.265 or AV1. For 720p at 30 fps, it recommends 8 Mbps with H.264 and 6 Mbps with H.265 or AV1. These are recommendations, not guarantees of quality or connection stability; use the current table for other combinations.

- Stream copy or remux: avoids video and audio encoding, reducing CPU load. Use it only when the media’s codecs, stream layout and timing are suitable for YouTube and remain compatible across playlist transitions.
- Re-encode: gives you control over output codec, bitrate, frame rate and keyframe interval, but requires enough CPU or supported encoding hardware to sustain the selected settings. Test the resulting stream rather than assuming the host can encode it continuously.
FFmpeg protocol options depend on how it was built. Check the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation for your installed build when configuring RTMP or RTMPS.

Run FFmpeg as a systemd service
Run FFmpeg in the foreground so systemd can track its process. A long-running service commonly uses a simple service type and an on-failure restart policy, but exact directives should be checked against the systemd version on your host. The systemd project recommends Restart=on-failure or Restart=on-abnormal for many long-running services; see the systemd project’s release notes and the manuals installed on your system.
- Choose the service account and paths. Set up a stable working directory or use absolute paths. Confirm the service account can read the media and any playlist.
- Protect the stream key. Do not put a real key in a publicly readable unit file or an illustrative command. Choose a secret-storage method supported by your installed systemd version, and verify its behavior and file permissions in the matching manual. Environment-file handling, credential directives and sandboxing details are version-specific.
- Configure a foreground command. The service’s main process should be FFmpeg itself, with the input, output protocol, stream key handling and encoder settings appropriate to your media and YouTube event. Do not add shell backgrounding that hides the process from systemd.
- Set a measured restart policy. Restart after a process failure and use a delay or suitable restart limits to avoid rapid retry loops. Confirm your systemd version’s throttling behavior and choose a shutdown timeout that allows orderly network cleanup.
- Reload and start the service. Use your distribution’s standard systemd service-management commands, then inspect the unit status and journal for errors. Exact service names and commands depend on how you install the unit.
A restart policy restores an exited process; it does not prove that a still-running FFmpeg process is sending usable media. Treat process supervision and stream-health monitoring as separate jobs.

Test the stream before relying on the loop
- Start the service and inspect its status and recent journal output. Resolve file, permission, protocol or encoder errors before proceeding.
- Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and wait for the stream preview. Check both picture and sound, including representative motion and audio from the media.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health indicators and warnings. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream; its encoder guide describes the settings and health checks.
- Start the event in Studio if the event workflow requires you to click “Go live.” A connected encoder does not necessarily mean the public event has started.
- After a restart or media change, check the preview and health indicators again rather than relying only on a successful systemd status.
Plan for event duration and YouTube rules
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous loop should therefore not be treated as a single event that can run indefinitely: check current YouTube limits, plan event boundaries, and decide how you will resume the loop when an event ends. Streaming a prerecorded video does not grant rights to the video, music or other material it contains. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies. Reused-content eligibility and copyright enforcement are separate considerations; a loop is not exempt because it is automated or prerecorded.
Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg exits immediately: inspect the systemd journal for a missing file, invalid playlist entry, unreadable media, unsupported option or protocol error. Test the input and options as the service account, not only from your personal shell.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: verify the event’s current ingest URL and key, confirm the key has not been reset, and check that the FFmpeg build supports the selected protocol. Keep the key secret while troubleshooting.
- YouTube reports a stream-health warning: compare the actual output codec, bitrate, CBR behavior and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Check whether the upload connection reliably sustains the chosen bitrate.
- The preview has no sound or picture: inspect FFmpeg’s input and output stream mapping and verify the actual media tracks. Test representative files and playlist transitions in Live Control Room.
- The playlist fails at a transition: check codec and stream-layout compatibility, timestamps and file readability. The concat demuxer’s expectations are documented in the FFmpeg manual for the relevant release.
- systemd says the service is active but the broadcast is broken: confirm YouTube’s preview and health indicators. A live process can remain active while sending unusable media; restart-on-failure alone will not detect every such condition.
- The stream stops around an event boundary: check YouTube’s event duration and archive behavior, then start or schedule the next event as appropriate. Do not assume one event continues without limit.
